1 Dette er navnene på Israels sønner som kom til Egypt sammen med Jakob, hver med sine husfolk:

Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob):

2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi og Juda,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 Issakar, Sebulon og Benjamin,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 Dan og Naftali, Gad og Asjer.

Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

5 Alle Jakob etterkommere utgjorde sytti sjeler. Josef var allerede i Egypt.

And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already.

6 Josef døde, og alle hans brødre, og hele den generasjonen.

And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

7 Israels barn var fruktbare, de formerte seg, ble veldig mange, og landet ble fylt av dem.

And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

8 Det sto opp en ny konge over Egypt som ikke kjente Josef.

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

9 Han sa til sitt folk: Se, Israels folk er mer tallrike og sterkere enn oss.

And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

10 La oss være kloke og hindre dem i å vokse, ellers kommer de til å bli så mange at de vil hjelpe våre fiender i krig og forlate landet.

come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.

11 Derfor satte de slavefogder over dem for å pine dem med tunge byrder. De bygde for farao forrådsbyene Pitom og Ramses.

Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses.

12 Men jo mer de plaget dem, jo mer vokste de og spredte seg. Egypterne ble engstelige på grunn av Israels barn.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

13 Egypterne tvang Israels barn til å arbeide hardt.

And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor:

14 De gjorde deres liv bittert med hardt arbeid ved leire og tegl, og med alle slags påkjenninger på markene, alt det slitsomme arbeidet de tvang dem til.

and they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field, all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigor.

15 Kongen i Egypt talte til hebraiske jordmødre, hvorav den ene hette Sjifra og den andre Pua.

And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

16 Han sa: Når dere hjelper de hebraiske kvinnene med å føde og ser på fødestolen, er det en gutt, skal dere drepe ham, men er det en jente, skal hun få leve.

and he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birth-stool; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

17 Men jordmødrene fryktet Gud og gjorde ikke som kongen i Egypt befalte dem, men lot guttene leve.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive.

18 Da kalte kongen i Egypt jordmødrene til seg og sa: Hvorfor har dere gjort dette og latt guttene leve?

And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?

19 Jordmødrene svarte farao: Hebraiske kvinner er ikke som egyptiske kvinner; de er livlige og føder før jordmoren kommer til dem.

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.

20 Gud gjorde vel mot jordmødrene, og folket økte i antall og ble svært sterkt.

And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

21 Og fordi jordmødrene fryktet Gud, ga han dem familier.

And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them households.

22 Farao ga hele folket denne befaling: Hver sønn som fødes skal kastes i elven, men hver datter skal få leve.

And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
