1 I den tredje måneden etter at Israels barn hadde dratt ut av landet Egypt, kom de samme dag inn i Sinai-ørkenen.

In the third month after the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.

2 Da de var dratt fra Rephidim og kommet til Sinai-ørkenen, slo de leir i ørkenen; og der slo Israel leir foran fjellet.

And when they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mount.

3 Og Moses gikk opp til Gud, og Herren kalte på ham fra fjellet og sa: Slik skal du si til Jakobs hus og fortelle Israels barn:

And Moses went up unto God, and Jehovah called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:

4 Dere har sett hva jeg gjorde med egypterne, og hvordan jeg bar dere på ørnevinger og førte dere til meg.

Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.

5 Hvis dere nå virkelig vil lytte til min røst og holde min pakt, skal dere være min eiendom blant alle folk, for hele jorden er min.

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be mine own possession from among all peoples: for all the earth is mine:

6 Dere skal være for meg et kongerike av prester og et hellig folk. Dette er ordene du skal tale til Israels barn.

and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

7 Moses kom og kalte til seg folkets eldste og la fram for dem alle disse ordene som Herren hadde befalt ham.

And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Jehovah commanded him.

8 Og hele folket svarte enstemmig: Alt hva Herren har sagt, vil vi gjøre. Og Moses brakte folkets ord tilbake til Herren.

And all the people answered together, and said, All that Jehovah hath spoken we will do. And Moses reported the words of the people unto Jehovah.

9 Og Herren sa til Moses: Se, jeg kommer til deg i en tett sky, slik at folket kan høre når jeg taler med deg og for alltid tro på deg. Og Moses fortalte Herrens ord til folket.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and may also believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto Jehovah.

10 Og Herren sa til Moses: Gå til folket og innvie dem i dag og i morgen, og la dem vaske sine klær.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments,

11 Og vær klare til den tredje dagen, for på den tredje dagen vil Herren komme ned foran hele folket på Sinai-fjellet.

and be ready against the third day; for the third day Jehovah will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

12 Og du skal sette grenser for folket rundt omkring og si: Se opp for at dere ikke går opp på fjellet eller rører ved dets kant. Enhver som rører ved fjellet, skal visselig bli straffet med døden.

And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:

13 Ingen hånd skal røre ved ham, men han skal blive steinet eller skutt gjennom; enten det er dyr eller menneske, skal det ikke leve. Når hornet lyder lenge, kan de stige opp til fjellet.

no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, he shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

14 Og Moses gikk ned fra fjellet til folket og innviet folket, og de vasket sine klær.

And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their garments.

15 Og han sa til folket: Vær klare til den tredje dagen; nærm dere ikke en kvinne.

And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not near a woman.

16 På den tredje dagen, da det ble morgen, var det tordenvær og lyn, og en tett sky over fjellet, og lyden av et veldig høyt horn; og alt folket som var i leiren, skalv.

And it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a trumpet exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp trembled.

17 Og Moses førte folket ut av leiren for å møte Gud, og de stilte seg ved foten av fjellet.

And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18 Og hele Sinai-fjellet var dekket av røyk, fordi Herren hadde steget ned i ild; og røyken steg opp som røyk fra en smelteovn, og hele fjellet skalv voldsomt.

And mount Sinai, the whole of it, smoked, because Jehovah descended upon it in fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19 Og lyden av hornet ble sterkere og sterkere; og Moses talte, og Gud svarte ham med en røst.

And when the voice of the trumpet waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.

20 Og Herren steg ned på Sinai-fjellet, til fjellets topp; og Herren kalte på Moses til fjellets topp; og Moses gikk opp.

And Jehovah came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount: and Jehovah called Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

21 Og Herren sa til Moses: Gå ned og advar folket slik at de ikke trenger gjennom for å se Herren og mange av dem faller.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto Jehovah to gaze, and many of them perish.

22 La også prestene, som nærmer seg Herren, innvie seg, så ikke Herren bryter ut mot dem.

And let the priests also, that come near to Jehovah, sanctify themselves, lest Jehovah break forth upon them.

23 Og Moses sa til Herren: Folket kan ikke komme opp til Sinai-fjellet, for du har advart oss og sagt: Sett grenser omkring fjellet og helliggjør det.

And Moses said unto Jehovah, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou didst charge us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

24 Og Herren sa til ham: Gå ned, og du skal komme opp igjen, du og Aron med deg; men prestene og folket må ikke bryte gjennom for å komme opp til Herren, for at Han ikke skal bryte ut mot dem.

And Jehovah said unto him, Go, get thee down; and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto Jehovah, lest he break forth upon them.

25 Så gikk Moses ned til folket og sa det til dem.

So Moses went down unto the people, and told them.
