1 Og Herren talte til Moses: Dra opp herfra, du og folket som du har ført ut av Egyptens land, til det landet som jeg sverget til Abraham, Isak og Jakob og sa: Til din ætt vil jeg gi det.

And Jehovah spake unto Moses, Depart, go up hence, thou and the people that thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land of which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

2 Og jeg vil sende en engel foran deg; og jeg vil drive ut kanaaneerne, amorittene, hetittene, perisittene, hivittene og jebusittene.

and I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

3 Til et land som flyter av melk og honning. Men jeg vil ikke dra opp med deg, for du er et stivnakket folk, så jeg ikke skulle fortære deg på veien.

unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee, for thou art a stiffnecked people, lest I consume thee in the way.

4 Da folket hørte disse triste nyhetene, sørget de, og ingen tok på seg smykker.

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

5 Og Herren sa til Moses: Si til Israels barn: Dere er et stivnakket folk; om jeg gikk opp iblant dere et øyeblikk, ville jeg fortære dere. Ta derfor av dere smykkene, så jeg kan vite hva jeg vil gjøre med dere.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people; if I go up into the midst of thee for one moment, I shall consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

6 Og Israels barn tok av seg smykkene fra fjellet Horeb og utover.

And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from mount Horeb onward.

7 Moses pleide å ta teltet og reise det utenfor leiren, et stykke bort, og han kalte det møteteltet. Og hver den som søkte Herren, gikk ut til møteteltet, som var utenfor leiren.

Now Moses used to take the tent and to pitch it without the camp, afar off from the camp; and he called it, The tent of meeting. And it came to pass, that every one that sought Jehovah went out unto the tent of meeting, which was without the camp.

8 Og når Moses gikk ut til teltet, reiste hele folket seg og sto, hver ved inngangen til sitt telt, og så etter Moses, til han var gått inn i teltet.

And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the Tent, that all the people rose up, and stood, every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the Tent.

9 Og når Moses gikk inn i teltet, steg skystøtten ned og sto ved inngangen til teltet, og Herren talte med Moses.

And it came to pass, when Moses entered into the Tent, the pillar of cloud descended, and stood at the door of the Tent: and `Jehovah' spake with Moses.

10 Og hele folket så skystøtten stå ved inngangen til teltet, og hele folket reiste seg og tilba, hver ved inngangen til sitt telt.

And all the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man at his tent door.

11 Og Herren talte med Moses ansikt til ansikt, som en mann taler med sin venn. Så vendte Moses tilbake til leiren, men hans tjener Josva, Nuns sønn, en ung mann, vek ikke fra teltet.

And Jehovah spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the Tent.

12 Og Moses sa til Herren: Se, du sier til meg: Før dette folket opp; men du har ikke latt meg vite hvem du vil sende med meg. Likevel har du sagt: Jeg kjenner deg ved navn, og du har funnet nåde for mine øyne.

And Moses said unto Jehovah, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found favor in my sight.

13 Så jeg ber deg, hvis jeg har funnet nåde for dine øyne, vis meg dine veier, så jeg kan kjenne deg og fortsette å finne nåde for dine øyne. Tenk også på at dette folket er ditt folk.

Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy ways, that I may know thee, to the end that I may find favor in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.

14 Og han sa: Mitt nærvær skal gå med deg, og jeg vil gi deg hvile.

And he said, My presence shall go `with thee', and I will give thee rest.

15 Da sa han til ham: Hvis ditt nærvær ikke går med oss, så før oss ikke opp herfra.

And he said unto him, If thy presence go not `with me', carry us not up hence.

16 For hvordan skal det bli kjent at jeg har funnet nåde i dine øyne, jeg og ditt folk? Er det ikke ved at du går med oss, slik at vi skilles ut, jeg og ditt folk, fra alle folkene på jorden?

For wherein now shall it be known that I have found favor in thy sight, I and thy people? is it not in that thou goest with us, so that we are separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth?

17 Og Herren sa til Moses: Jeg vil også gjøre det du har sagt, for du har funnet nåde for mine øyne, og jeg kjenner deg ved navn.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken; for thou hast found favor in my sight, and I know thee by name.

18 Da sa han: La meg få se din herlighet.

And he said, Show me, I pray thee, thy glory.

19 Og han sa: Jeg vil la all min godhet gå forbi deg og utroper Herrens navn foran deg; og jeg vil være nådig mot den jeg vil være nådig mot, og vise barmhjertighet mot den jeg vil vise barmhjertighet mot.

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and will proclaim the name of Jehovah before thee; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

20 Og han sa: Du kan ikke se mitt ansikt, for intet menneske kan se meg og leve.

And he said, Thou canst not see my face; for man shall not see me and live.

21 Og Herren sa: Se, det er et sted ved meg, og du skal stå på klippen.

and Jehovah said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock:

22 Og det skal skje, mens min herlighet går forbi, at jeg vil sette deg i en klippespalte, og jeg vil dekke deg med min hånd til jeg har gått forbi.

and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand until I have passed by:

23 Så vil jeg ta bort min hånd, og du skal se min rygg, men mitt ansikt skal ikke bli sett.

and I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my back; but my face shall not be seen.
