Og Abraham dro derfra mot Sørlandet og bodde mellom Kadesj og Sur. Han oppholdt seg i Gerar.

And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur. And he sojourned in Gerar.

Og Abraham sa at Sara, hans kone, var hans søster. Da sendte Abimelek, kongen i Gerar, og tok Sara.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

Men Gud kom til Abimelek i en drøm om natten og sa til ham: «Se, du er en død mann på grunn av kvinnen du har tatt, for hun er en annen manns hustru.»

But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, because of the woman whom thou hast taken. For she is a man's wife.

Nå hadde ikke Abimelek kommet nær henne. Og han sa: «Herre, vil du virkelig drepe en rettferdig nasjon?

Now Abimelech had not come near her. And he said, Lord, wilt thou slay even a righteous nation?

Sa han ikke selv til meg: 'Hun er min søster'? Og også hun sa: 'Han er min bror.' I hjertets oppriktighet og med rent sinn har jeg gjort dette.»

Said he not himself unto me, She is my sister? And she, even she herself said, He is my brother. In the integrity of my heart and the innocency of my hands have I done this.

Og Gud sa til ham i drømmen: «Ja, jeg vet at du har gjort dette i hjertets oppriktighet, og jeg hindret deg fra å synde mot meg. Derfor lot jeg deg ikke røre henne.

And God said unto him in the dream, Yea, I know that in the integrity of thy heart thou has done this, and I also withheld thee from sinning against me. Therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

Gi nå mannens kone tilbake. For han er en profet, og han vil be for deg så du kan leve. Men hvis du ikke gir henne tilbake, skal du vite at du helt sikkert skal dø, du og alt som hører deg til.»

Now therefore restore the man's wife. For he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live. And if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

Abimelek sto tidlig opp om morgenen, kalte til seg alle sine tjenere og fortalte dem alle disse tingene. Og mennene ble svært redde.

And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ear. And the men were sore afraid.

Så kalte Abimelek på Abraham og sa til ham: «Hva har du gjort mot oss? Og hva har jeg syndet mot deg siden du har påført meg og kongeriket mitt en så stor skyld? Du har gjort ting mot meg som ikke burde vært gjort.»

Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? And wherein have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? Thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

Og Abimelek sa til Abraham: «Hva tenkte du på da du gjorde dette?»

And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?

Abraham sa: «Fordi jeg tenkte: Sannelig, gudsfrykt finnes ikke på dette stedet, og de vil drepe meg for min kones skyld.

And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place. And they will slay me for my wife's sake.

Og dessuten er hun virkelig min søster, datter av min far, men ikke datter av min mor. Og hun ble min kone.

And moreover she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife:

Og det skjedde da Gud lot meg vandre bort fra min fars hus, at jeg sa til henne: Dette er den godhet du skal vise meg, at på hvert sted vi kommer til, skal du si om meg: Han er min bror.

and it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt show unto me. At every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

Da tok Abimelek sauer, okser, tjenestemenn og tjenestekvinner og ga dem til Abraham, og han ga ham tilbake Sara, hans kone.

And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and men-servants and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

Abimelek sa: «Se, mitt land ligger foran deg. Bli der hvor du måtte ønske.»

And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee. Dwell where it pleaseth thee.

Og til Sara sa han: «Se, jeg har gitt din bror tusen sølvstykker. Se, det er for deg et slør for øynene til alle som er med deg, og i alles øyne er du rettferdiggjort.»

And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is for thee a covering of the eyes to all that are with thee. And in respect of all thou art righted.

Og Abraham ba til Gud, og Gud helbredet Abimelek, hans kone og hans tjenestekvinner, slik at de kunne føde barn.

And Abraham prayed unto God. And God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants. And they bare children.

For Herren hadde lukket alle morsliv i Abimeleks hus på grunn av Sara, Abrahams kone.

For Jehovah had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
