Og det skjedde etter disse hendelsene at Gud satte Abraham på prøve og sa til ham: Abraham! Og han svarte: Her er jeg.

And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham. And he said, Here am I.

Da sa han: Ta nå din sønn, din eneste, som du elsker, Isak, og dra til landet Moria. Der skal du ofre ham som brennoffer på et av fjellene jeg vil vise deg.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son, whom thou lovest, even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah. And offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Abraham sto tidlig opp om morgenen, salte eselet sitt, tok med seg to av sine unge menn og Isak, sin sønn. Han kløvde veden til brennofferet, og dro av sted til stedet Gud hadde sagt.

And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. And he clave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

På den tredje dagen løftet Abraham blikket og så stedet langt borte.

On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

Abraham sa til de unge mennene: Bli her med eselet, mens jeg og gutten går dit bort, vi vil tilbe og komme tilbake til dere.

And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come again to you.

Abraham tok veden til brennofferet og la den på Isak, sin sønn. Selv bar han ilden og kniven. Så gikk de begge sammen.

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. And they went both of them together.

Isak sa til Abraham, sin far: Min far! Og han svarte: Her er jeg, min sønn. Da sa han: Se, her er ilden og veden, men hvor er lammet til brennofferet?

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father. And he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold, the fire and the wood. But where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?

Abraham svarte: Gud vil selv sørge for et lam til brennofferet, min sønn. Så gikk de videre sammen.

And Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son. So they went both of them together.

Da de kom til stedet Gud hadde sagt til Abraham, bygde Abraham et alter der, la veden til rette, bandt Isak, sin sønn, og la ham på alteret, oppå veden.

And they came to the place which God had told him of. And Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.

Abraham rakte ut hånden og tok kniven for å ofre sin sønn.

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

Da ropte Herrens engel til ham fra himmelen og sa: Abraham, Abraham! Og han svarte: Her er jeg.

And the angel of Jehovah called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, Here I am.

Han sa: Legg ikke hånd på gutten og gjør ham ingenting. For nå vet jeg at du frykter Gud, siden du ikke har spart din sønn, din eneste, for meg.

And he said, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him. For now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from me.

Da løftet Abraham blikket og så en vær som hang fast i et kratt ved hornene. Abraham gikk bort, tok væren og ofret den som brennoffer i stedet for sin sønn.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind `him' a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son.

Abraham kalte dette stedet «Jahve-jireh». Derfor heter det den dag i dag: På Herrens fjell skal det skje.

And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh. As it is said to this day, In the mount of Jehovah it shall be provided.

Herrens engel ropte en gang til til Abraham fra himmelen

And the angel of Jehovah called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven,

og sa: Ved meg selv har jeg sverget, sier Herren, fordi du har gjort dette og ikke spart din sønn, din eneste.

and said, By myself have I sworn, saith Jehovah, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son,

Derfor vil jeg velsigne deg rikelig og gjøre dine etterkommere tallrike som stjernene på himmelen og som sanden ved havets bredd. Dine etterkommere skal innta sine fienders porter.

that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is upon the seashore. And thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.

Og i din ætt skal alle jordens folk velsignes, fordi du har adlydt min røst.

And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Så vendte Abraham tilbake til sine unge menn, og de sto opp og dro sammen til Beersjeba. Og Abraham ble boende i Beersjeba.

So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba. And Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.

Etter disse hendelsene ble det fortalt til Abraham: Se, Milka har også født barn til din bror Nahor:

And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she also hath borne children unto they brother Nahor.

Us, hans førstefødte, Buz, hans bror, og Kemuel, Arams far.

Uz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram.

Og Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaf og Betuel.

And Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

Betuel fikk Rebekka. Disse åtte fødte Milka til Nahor, Abrahams bror.

And Bethuel begat Rebekah. These eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

Hans medhustru, som het Reuma, fødte også barn: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash og Maaka.

And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bare Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.
