Det var hungersnød i landet, i tillegg til den første hungersnøden som var på Abrahams tid. Og Isak dro til Abimelek, kongen av filisterne, i Gerar.

And there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, unto Gerar.

Og Herren viste seg for ham og sa: Dra ikke ned til Egypt. Bli boende i det landet som jeg skal vise deg.

And Jehovah appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt. Dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of.

Bo som fremmed i dette landet, så vil jeg være med deg og velsigne deg. For til deg og din ætt vil jeg gi alle disse landene, og jeg vil oppfylle eden jeg sverget til din far Abraham.

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee. For unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father.

Jeg vil gjøre din ætt tallrik som stjernene på himmelen og gi din ætt alle disse landene. Og i din ætt skal alle jordens folk velsignes.

And I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these lands. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

Dette fordi Abraham adlød min røst og holdt min befaling, mine bud, mine forskrifter og mine lover.

Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

Og Isak ble boende i Gerar.

And Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

Mennene på stedet spurte om hans kone. Og han sa: Hun er min søster. For han fryktet å si: Hun er min kone. For han tenkte: Mennene her kunne drepe meg for Rebekkas skyld. Fordi hun var vakker.

And the men of the place asked him of his wife. And he said, She is my sister. For he feared to say, My wife. Lest, `said he', the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah. Because she was fair to look upon.

Og etter at han hadde vært der en tid, så Abimelek, filisternes konge, ut gjennom et vindu, og han så at Isak lekte med sin kone Rebekka.

And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

Da kalte Abimelek Isak til seg og sa: Se, hun er jo din kone. Hvorfor sa du da: Hun er min søster? Isak svarte ham: Fordi jeg tenkte at jeg kunne dø for hennes skyld.

And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife. And how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die because of her.

Og Abimelek sa: Hva er dette du har gjort mot oss? En av folket kunne lett ha ligget med din kone, og da ville du ha brakt skyld over oss.

And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? One of the people might easily have lain with thy wife, and thou wouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

Da påla Abimelek hele folket og sa: Den som rører denne mannen eller hans kone, skal dø.

And Abimelech charged all the people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

Isak sådde i det landet og høstet det året hundrefold. Og Herren velsignet ham.

And Isaac sowed in that land, and found in the same year a hundredfold. And Jehovah blessed him.

Mannen ble rik og ble stadig rikere, inntil han ble meget velstående.

And the man waxed great, and grew more and more until he became very great.

Han eide saueflokker, kyr og mange tjenere. Og filisterne misunte ham.

And he had possessions of flocks, and possessions of herds, and a great household. And the Philistines envied him.

Alle brønnene som hans fars tjenere hadde gravd på Abrahams, hans fars tid, hadde filisterne fylt igjen med jord.

Now all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth.

Abimelek sa til Isak: Dra bort fra oss. For du er blitt mye mektigere enn vi.

And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us. For thou art much mightier than we.

Isak dro derfra og slo leir i Gerars dal, og bodde der.

And Isaac departed thence, and encamped in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

Isak gravde opp igjen brønnene, som de hadde gravd i dagene til Abraham, hans far, for filisterne hadde fylt dem igjen etter Abrahams død. Og han ga dem de samme navnene som hans far hadde gitt dem.

And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father. For the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. And he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

Isaks tjenere gravde i dalen og fant der en kilde med levende vann.

And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

Men hyrdene fra Gerar trettet med Isaks hyrder og sa: Vannet tilhører oss. Derfor kalte han brønnen Esek, fordi de kranglet med ham.

And the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, The water is ours. And he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

De gravde en annen brønn, og de kranglet om den også. Så kalte han den Sitna.

And they digged another well, and they strove for that also. And he called the name of it Sitnah.

Han flyttet så videre og gravde en ny brønn, og om den kranglet de ikke. Så kalte han den Rehobot, for han sa: Nå har Herren gitt oss plass, så vi kan bli fruktbare i landet.

And he removed from thence, and digged another well. And for that they strove not. And he called the name of it Rehoboth. And he said, For now Jehovah hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

Så dro han opp derfra til Beersheba.

And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba.

Herren viste seg for ham den samme natten og sa: Jeg er din far Abrahams Gud. Frykt ikke, for jeg er med deg. Jeg vil velsigne deg og gjøre din ætt tallrik for min tjener Abrahams skyld.

And Jehovah appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father. Fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.

Så bygde han et alter der og påkalte Herrens navn og slo opp teltet sitt der. Og Isaks tjenere gravde en brønn der.

And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of Jehovah, and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac's servants digged a well.

Da kom Abimelek til ham fra Gerar med Ahuassat, en av sine venner, og Pikol, høvedsmannen over hæren hans.

Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his host.

Isak sa til dem: Hvorfor har dere kommet til meg, når dere hater meg og har sendt meg bort fra dere?

And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore are ye come unto me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

De svarte: Vi har tydelig sett at Herren er med deg, derfor sa vi: La det være en edsfest mellom oss, mellom oss og deg, og la oss inngå en pakt med deg,

And they said, We saw plainly that Jehovah was with thee. And we said, Let there now be an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee,

at du ikke skal gjøre oss noe ondt, slik vi ikke har rørt deg og bare gjort godt mot deg og sendt deg bort i fred. Nå er du velsignet av Herren.

that thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace. Thou art now the blessed of Jehovah.

Så laget han et gjestebud for dem, og de spiste og drakk.

And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.

Tidlig neste morgen avla de en ed for hverandre. Så sendte Isak dem av sted, og de dro fra ham i fred.

And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another. And Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

Samme dagen kom Isaks tjenere og sa til ham om brønnen som de hadde gravd: Vi har funnet vann.

And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.

Han kalte den Shiba. Derfor heter byen Beersheba den dag i dag.

And he called it Shibah. Therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day.

Da Esau var førti år gammel, tok han til kone Judit, datteren til Beeri heteeren, og Basemat, datteren til Elon heteeren.

And when Esau was forty years old he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

De var en hjertesorg for Isak og Rebekka.

And they were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
