Og Isak kalte til seg Jakob, velsignet ham, og ga ham en beskjed, og sa til ham: Du skal ikke ta deg en kone blant Kanaans døtre.

And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

Stå opp, dra til Paddan-Aram, til Betuels hus, morens far. Ta deg en kone derfra, av døtrene til Laban, din mors bror.

Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father. And take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.

Og Gud, den Allmektige, velsigne deg, gjør deg fruktbar og mangfoldig, så du blir en skare av folk.

And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a company of peoples.

Og han gi deg Abrahams velsignelse, til deg og dine etterkommere med deg, så du kan arve landet der du er en fremmed, som Gud ga til Abraham.

And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee. That thou mayest inherit the land of thy sojournings, which God gave unto Abraham.

Og Isak sendte Jakob av sted. Han dro til Paddan-Aram, til Laban, sønn av syreren Betuel, Rebekkas bror, Jakobs og Esaus mor.

And Isaac sent away Jacob. And he went to Paddan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

Nå så Esau at Isak hadde velsignet Jakob og sendt ham av sted til Paddan-Aram, for å finne seg en kone der. Og at han ved velsignelsen hadde pålagt ham og sagt: Du skal ikke ta en kone blant datterene til Kanaan.

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram, to take him a wife from thence. And that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

Og at Jakob hadde lystret sin far og mor og dratt til Paddan-Aram.

And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan-aram.

Og Esau skjønte at Kanaans døtre ikke var til glede for hans far Isak.

And Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father.

Da gikk Esau til Ismael og tok Mahalat, Ismaels datter, Abrahams sønn, Nebajoths søster, til kone, foruten de konene han allerede hadde.

And Esau went unto Ishmael, and took, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

Jakob dro ut fra Be’er-Sheba mot Haran.

And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.

Han kom til et visst sted og ble der over natten, fordi solen var gått ned. Han tok en av steinene fra stedet, la den under hodet og la seg der for å sove.

And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set. And he took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

Og han drømte. Og se, det sto en stige på jorden, og toppen nådde opp til himmelen. Og se, Guds engler steg opp og ned på den.

And he dreamed. And behold, a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

Og se, Herren sto øverst og sa: Jeg er Herren, din far Abrahams Gud og Isaks Gud. Det landet du ligger på, vil jeg gi deg og dine etterkommere.

And, behold, Jehovah stood above it, and said, I am Jehovah, the God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed.

Og dine etterkommere skal bli som støvet på jorden, og du skal bre deg ut mot vest og øst, nord og sør. I deg og dine etterkommere skal alle jordens slekter velsignes.

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. And in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Og se, jeg er med deg, og vil bevare deg overalt hvor du går, og vil føre deg tilbake til dette landet. Jeg vil ikke forlate deg før jeg har gjort det jeg har lovet deg.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee, whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land. For I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

Og Jakob våknet av søvnen og sa: Sannelig, Herren er på dette stedet, og jeg visste det ikke.

And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely Jehovah is in this place. And I knew it not.

Og han ble redd og sa: Hvor fryktinngytende er ikke dette stedet! Her er jo Guds hus, og her er himmelens port.

And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.

Og Jakob sto tidlig opp om morgenen, tok steinen han hadde hatt under hodet, reiste den opp som en støtte og helte olje over toppen av den.

And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

Og han kalte stedet Betel. Men tidligere hadde byen hatt navnet Luz.

And he called the name of that place Beth-el. But the name of the city was Luz at the first.

Og Jakob ga et løfte og sa: Hvis Gud er med meg og holder meg på denne vei, og gir meg brød å spise og klær å ha på,

And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,

slik at jeg vender tilbake i fred til farshuset mitt, da skal Herren være min Gud.

so that I come again to my father's house in peace, and Jehovah will be my God,

Da skal denne steinen som jeg har reist som en støtte, bli Guds hus. Og av alt du gir meg, vil jeg gi deg tiende.

then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
