And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her; And he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.

And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.

And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

Jakob hørte at han hadde vanæret Dinah, hans datter; og hans sønner var med buskapen på marken, så Jakob holdt seg rolig inntil de kom.

Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; and his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they came.

Og Hamor, faren til Sikem, gikk ut til Jakob for å tale med ham.

And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.

Da Jakobs sønner hørte det, kom de fra marken, og mennene ble bedrøvet og meget vrede, fordi han hadde begått en skam i Israel ved å ligge med Jakobs datter; noe slikt burde ikke ha skjedd.

And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.

Hamor talte med dem og sa: «Min sønn Sikems sjel lengter etter deres datter. Jeg ber dere, gi henne til ham som kone.»

And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you, give her unto him to wife.

«La oss inngå ekteskap med dere; gi deres døtre til oss, og ta våre døtre til dere.»

And make ye marriages with us; give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

«Dere kan bo hos oss, og landet skal være åpent for dere; bosett dere og handel der, og skaff dere eiendommer der.»

And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.

Sikem sa til hennes far og hennes brødre: «La meg finne nåde i deres øyne, og det dere sier til meg, vil jeg gi.»

And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find favor in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

«Be meg om så mye medgift og gave som dere ønsker, og jeg vil gi det slik dere sier til meg. Men gi meg piken til kone.»

Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.

Jakobs sønner svarte Sikem og Hamor, hans far, med list, fordi han hadde vanæret Dinah, deres søster,

And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with guile, and spake, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,

og de sa til dem: «Vi kan ikke gjøre dette, å gi vår søster til en som er uomskåret, for det ville være en vanære for oss.»

and said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us.

«Kun på denne betingelse vil vi samtykke med dere: hvis dere blir som oss, ved at enhver av dere menn blir omskåret.»

Only on this condition will we consent unto you: if ye will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised;

«Da vil vi gi våre døtre til dere, og vi vil ta deres døtre til oss, og vi vil bo med dere og bli ett folk.»

then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

«Men hvis dere ikke vil lytte til oss og bli omskåret, vil vi ta vår datter og dra bort.»

But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.

Deres ord behaget Hamor og Sikem, Hamors sønn.

And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.

Og den unge mannen nølte ikke med å gjøre dette, fordi han hadde glede i Jakobs datter, og han ble mer æret enn noen i sin fars hus.

And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was honored above all the house of his father.

Hamor og Sikem, hans sønn, kom til porten i deres by og talte til innbyggerne i byen, og sa:

And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,

«Disse mennene er fredelige med oss; la dem bo i landet og handle der, for se, landet er stort nok for dem; la oss ta deres døtre til koner, og la oss gi dem våre døtre.»

These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for, behold, the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

«Kun på denne betingelse vil mennene samtykke til å bo hos oss og bli ett folk, hvis hver av oss menn blir omskåret, slik de er omskåret.»

Only on this condition will the men consent unto us to dwell with us, to become one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

«Vil ikke deres buskap og deres eiendom og alle deres dyr bli våre? La oss bare samtykke med dem, så vil de bo med oss.»

Shall not their cattle and their substance and all their beasts be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

Alle som gikk ut av porten i deres by, lyttet til Hamor og Sikem, hans sønn; og hver mann ble omskåret, alle som gikk ut av porten i deres by.

And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

Den tredje dagen, mens de hadde smerter, tok to av Jakobs sønner, Simeon og Levi, Dinahs brødre, hvert sitt sverd, og de kom uventet over byen og drepte alle mennene.

And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city unawares, and slew all the males.

De drepte Hamor og Sikem, hans sønn, med sverdets egg og tok Dinah ut av Sikems hus og dro bort.

And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went forth.

Jakobs sønner kom over de drepte og plyndret byen fordi de hadde vanæret deres søster.

The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

They took their flocks and their herds and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field;

and all their wealth, and all their little ones and their wives, took they captive and made a prey, even all that was in the house.

Jakob sa til Simeon og Levi: «Dere har brakt ulykke over meg ved å gjøre meg avskyelig for innbyggerne i landet, for kanaaneerne og perisittene. Vi er få i antall, og de vil samles mot meg og slå meg, og jeg og mitt hus vil bli ødelagt.»

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and, I being few in number, they will gather themselves together against me and smite me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

Men de sa: «Skulle han behandle vår søster som en skjøge?»

And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?
