Da gikk Josef inn og fortalte farao, og sa: Min far og mine brødre, og deres buskap, og alt de eier, er kommet fra Kanaans land; og de er nå i landet Gosen.

Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

Og han valgte ut fem av sine brødre og presenterte dem for farao.

And from among his brethren he took five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.

Farao spurte brødrene: Hva er deres yrke? Og de svarte farao: Dine tjenere er gjetere, både vi og våre fedre.

And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.

Og de sa til farao: Vi er kommet for å oppholde oss i landet, for det finnes ikke beitemark for dine tjeneres buskap; for hungersnøden er hard i Kanaans land. La derfor dine tjenere bo i landet Gosen.

And they said unto Pharaoh, To sojourn in the land are we come; for there is no pasture for thy servants' flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

Farao sa til Josef: Din far og dine brødre er kommet til deg.

And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee:

Landet Egypt ligger foran deg; la din far og dine brødre bo i den beste delen av landet, la dem bo i landet Gosen. Og hvis du kjenner noen dyktige menn blant dem, så la dem ha oppsyn over min buskap.

the land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and thy brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any able men among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

Josef førte Jakob, sin far, inn og stilte ham foran farao, og Jakob velsignet farao.

And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set him before Pharaoh: and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

Farao spurte Jakob: Hvor mange er årene i ditt liv?

And Pharaoh said unto Jacob, How many are the days of the years of thy life?

Jakob svarte farao: Dagene i mitt livs vandring er hundre og tretti år; få og onde har dagene i mitt liv vært, og de har ikke nådd mine fedres levetid i deres vandrings dager.

And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

Og Jakob velsignet farao og gikk ut fra faraos nærvær.

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from the presence of Pharaoh.

Josef sørget for at hans far og hans brødre fikk en eiendom i Egypt, i den beste delen av landet, i landet Ramses, som farao hadde befalt.

And Joseph placed his father and his brethren, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

Josef forsørget sin far, sine brødre og hele sin fars husstand med brød, etter deres behov.

And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

Det var ikke brød i hele landet, for hungersnøden var meget hard, og både Egypt og Kanaans land var svekket av hungersnøden.

And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine.

Josef samlet inn alle pengene som fantes i Egypt og Kanaans land for kornet de kjøpte, og Josef førte pengene til faraos hus.

And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

Da pengene var oppbrukt i både Egypt og Kanaans land, kom alle egypterne til Josef og sa: Gi oss brød, hvorfor skulle vi dø foran deg, våre penger er brukt opp.

And when the money was all spent in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, Give us bread: for why should we die in thy presence? for `our' money faileth.

Josef sa: Gi meg buskapen deres, så skal jeg gi dere brød i bytte for buskapen, hvis pengene er oppbrukt.

And Joseph said, Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.

De brakte buskapen sin til Josef, og Josef ga dem brød i bytte for hester, småfe, storfe og esler. Slik forsørget han dem med brød for all deres buskap det året.

And they brought their cattle unto Joseph; and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year.

Da det året var omme, kom de til ham neste år og sa: Vi vil ikke skjule for vår herre at både pengene våre og vår herres buskap er borte; alt vi har igjen er våre kropper og våre marker.

And when that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide from my lord, how that our money is all spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord's; there is nought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:

Hvorfor skulle vi dø for øynene dine, både vi og jorden vår? Kjøp oss og jorden vår for brød, så skal vi og jorden vår tjene farao; gi oss korn så vi kan leve og ikke dø, og at jorden ikke skal ligge øde.

wherefore should we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land be not desolate.

Så kjøpte Josef hele Egypt for farao, for egypterne solgte hver mann sin jord fordi sulten var hard mot dem, og landet ble faraos.

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was sore upon them: and the land became Pharaoh's.

Han flyttet folket til byene, fra den ene enden av Egypts grense til den andre.

And as for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

Men prestenes land kjøpte han ikke, fordi prestene hadde sin porsjon fra farao og spiste deres del som farao ga dem; derfor solgte de ikke sitt land.

Only the land of the priests bought he not: for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore they sold not their land.

Josef sa så til folket: Se, jeg har i dag kjøpt dere og deres land for farao. Her er korn til dere, og dere skal så jorden.

Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land.

Ved innhøstingen skal dere gi en femtedel til farao, og de fire delene skal være til dere selv, til korn for å så, til mat for dere og deres husholdninger og som føde for barna deres.

And it shall come to pass at the ingatherings, that ye shall give a fifth unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.

De sa: Du har reddet våre liv; la oss finne nåde for din herre, så skal vi være faraos tjenere.

And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh's servants.

Josef gjorde det til en lov i Egypt, som gjelder til denne dag, at farao skulle ha femtedelen; bare prestenes land ble ikke faraos.

And Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; only the land of the priests alone became not Pharaoh's.

Israel ble boende i Egypts land, i landet Gosen, og de fikk eiendom der, ble fruktbare og økte sterkt i antall.

And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gat them possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.

And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred forty and seven years.

Da tiden nærmet seg for Israel til å dø, kalte han til seg sin sønn Josef og sa til ham: Hvis jeg har funnet nåde i dine øyne, legg din hånd under mitt lår, og gjør mot meg noe godt og sant; begrav meg ikke i Egypt.

And the time drew near that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found favor in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me: bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt;

Men når jeg hviler med mine fedre, skal du føre meg ut av Egypt og begrave meg i deres grav. Og han svarte: Jeg skal gjøre som du har sagt.

but when I sleep with my fathers, thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying-place. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.

Og han sa: Sverg overfor meg! Og han sverget til ham. Da bøyde Israel seg på hodegjerdet av sengen.

And he said, Swear unto me: and he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed's head.
