1 I det andre året av kong Darius, i den sjette måneden, på den første dagen i måneden, kom Herrens ord ved profeten Haggai til Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, og til Josva, sønn av Josadak, ypperstepresten, og sa:

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

2 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Dette folket sier: Det er ikke tiden for oss å komme, tiden for Herrens hus til å bli bygd.

Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, saying, This people say, It is not the time `for us' to come, the time for Jehovah's house to be built.

3 Da kom Herrens ord ved profeten Haggai, og sa:

Then came the word of Jehovah by Haggai the prophet, saying,

4 Er det tid for dere selv å bo i flotte hus, mens dette huset ligger i ruiner?

Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your ceiled houses, while this house lieth waste?

5 Så sier nå Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Legg merke til deres veier.

Now therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.

6 Dere har sådd mye, men høster lite; dere spiser, men blir ikke mette; dere drikker, men blir ikke tilfredse; dere kler dere, men ingen blir varme; og den som tjener, tjener til en pung med hull.

Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages `to put it' into a bag with holes.

7 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Legg merke til deres veier.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Consider your ways.

8 Gå opp til fjellet, hent tømmer og bygg huset, så vil jeg ha velbehag i det og bli æret, sier Herren.

Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith Jehovah.

9 Dere har ventet på mye, men se, det ble lite; og når dere brakte det hjem, blåste jeg på det. Hvorfor? sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud. Fordi mitt hus ligger i ruiner, mens dere alle løper til deres egne hus.

Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith Jehovah of hosts. Because of my house that lieth waste, while ye run every man to his own house.

10 Derfor holder himmelen dugg tilbake for dere, og jorden holder tilbake sin grøde.

Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholdeth its fruit.

11 Jeg har kalt på tørke over landet, over fjellene, over kornet, over vinen, over oljen, over alt det marken bærer, over menneskene, over dyrene og over alt arbeidet deres hender utfører.

And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands.

12 Da adlød Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, og Josva, sønn av Josadak, ypperstepresten, og hele restene av folket, Herren deres Guds røst, og profeten Haggais ord, slik som Herren deres Gud hadde sendt ham; og folket fryktet Herren.

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Jehovah their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as Jehovah their God had sent him; and the people did fear before Jehovah.

13 Da talte Haggai, Herrens sendebud, Herrens budskap til folket, og sa: Jeg er med dere, sier Herren.

Then spake Haggai Jehovah's messenger in Jehovah's message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith Jehovah.

14 Og Herren oppildnet ånden i Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, og ånden i Josva, sønn av Josadak, ypperstepresten, og ånden i hele restene av folket; og de kom og arbeidet på huset til Herren, hærskarenes Gud.

And Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work on the house of Jehovah of hosts, their God,

15 På den fireogtyvende dagen i måneden, i den sjette måneden, i det andre året av kong Darius.

in the four and twentieth day of the month, in the sixth `month', in the second year of Darius the king.
