1 Å, Ariel, Ariel, byen hvor David slo leir! Legg år til år; la høytidene gå sin gang.

Ho Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! add ye year to year; let the feasts come round:

2 Da vil jeg plage Ariel, og det skal være sorg og klage; og Ariel skal bli for meg som en offerplass.

then will I distress Ariel, and there shall be mourning and lamentation; and she shall be unto me as Ariel.

3 Jeg vil slå leir rundt deg, og legge beleiring mot deg med soldater, og bygge beleiringsverker mot deg.

And I will encamp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with posted troops, and I will raise siege works against thee.

4 Du skal bli lagt lavt, og du skal tale fra bakken, og ordene dine skal komme lavt fra støvet; og din stemme skal være som en ånd fra graven, og din tale skal hviske fra støvet.

And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust; and thy voice shall be as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

5 Men mengden av dine fiender skal bli som fint støv, og de fryktinngytende skal bli som agner som blåses bort; ja, det skal skje plutselig.

But the multitude of thy foes shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be in an instant suddenly.

6 Og Herren, hærskarenes Gud, skal hjemsøke henne med torden og med jordskjelv og stor larm, med storm og orkan, og med ildsflammene som fortærer.

She shall be visited of Jehovah of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with whirlwind and tempest, and the flame of a devouring fire.

7 Og mengden av alle folkeslag som kjemper mot Ariel, alle som kjemper mot henne og hennes festning, og som plager henne, skal være som en drøm, en nattsyn.

And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her stronghold, and that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night.

8 Det skal være som når en sulten mann drømmer at han spiser, men våkner og er sulten, eller som når en tørst mann drømmer at han drikker, men våkner og er utmattet og fortsatt tørst. Slik skal mengden av alle folkeslag være som kjemper mot Sions berg.

And it shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

9 Vent og forundre dere; gled dere og bli blinde: de er drukne, men ikke av vin; de sjangler, men ikke av sterk drikk.

Tarry ye and wonder; take your pleasure and be blind: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink.

10 For Herren har øst over dere dyp søvnens ånd, og lukket øynene deres, profetene; og dekkene over hodene deres, seerne, har han tildekket.

For Jehovah hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes, the prophets; and your heads, the seers, hath he covered.

11 Og hele synet er blitt for dere som ord i en bok som er forseglet, som man overleverer til en lærd mann og sier: Les dette, jeg ber deg; og han sier: Jeg kan ikke, for den er forseglet.

And all vision is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I cannot, for it is sealed:

12 Og boken blir overlevert til en som ikke er lærd og sier: Les dette, jeg ber deg; og han sier: Jeg er ikke lærd.

and the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee; and he saith, I am not learned.

13 Og Herren sa: Siden dette folket nærmer seg meg med munnen og ærer meg med leppene, men har fjernet sitt hjerte langt fra meg, og deres frykt for meg er et menneskebud lært og innøvd,

And the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw nigh `unto me', and with their mouth and with their lips to honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment of men which hath been taught `them';

14 derfor, se, jeg skal igjen gjøre et under blant dette folket, et under og en forundring; og de vises visdom skal bli borte, og de forstandiges forstand skal bli skjult.

therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

15 Ve dem som gjemmer sine planer dypt for Herren, og hvis gjerninger er i mørket, og som sier: Hvem ser oss? og hvem vet?

Woe unto them that hide deep their counsel from Jehovah, and whose works are in the dark, and that say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

16 Dere snur ting opp ned! Skal pottemakeren bli regnet som leire, at det som er laget skal si om ham som laget det: Han har ikke laget meg; eller det som er formet, si om han som formet det: Han har ingen forståelse?

Ye turn things upside down! Shall the potter be esteemed as clay; that the thing made should say of him that made it, He made me not; or the thing formed say of him that formed it, He hath no understanding?

17 Om ikke enda en liten stund skal Libanon bli forvandlet til en fruktbar åker, og den fruktbare åkeren regnes som en skog?

Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

18 På den dagen skal de døve høre ordene fra boken, og de blindes øyne skal se ut av skjul og mørke.

And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.

19 De ydmyke skal også tilføye mer glede i Herren, og de fattige blant menneskene skal fryde seg i Israels Hellige.

The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

20 For den fryktinngytende er brakt til ingenting, spottens mann tar slutt, og alle som vokter på urett er avskåret;

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scoffer ceaseth, and all they that watch for iniquity are cut off;

21 de som gjør en mann skyldig i sin sak, og legger en felle for den som irettesetter i porten, og som vender de rettferdige bort med ingenting.

that make a man an offender in `his' cause, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just with a thing of nought.

22 Derfor sier Herren, som løste Abraham, om Jakobs hus: Jakob skal ikke nå skamme seg, og hans ansikt skal ikke bli blekt.

Therefore thus saith Jehovah, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.

23 Men når han ser sine barn, mine henders verk, midt iblant seg, skal de hellige mitt navn; ja, de skal hellige Jakobs Hellige, og frykte Israels Gud.

But when he seeth his children, the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name; yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall stand in awe of the God of Israel.

24 De som feiler i ånden, skal komme til forståelse, og de som klager, skal få undervisning.

They also that err in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmur shall receive instruction.
