1 Så sa Herren: Gå og kjøp en leirkrukke, og ta med noen av folkets eldste og prestenes eldste.

Thus said Jehovah, Go, and buy a potter's earthen bottle, and `take' of the elders of the people, and of the elders of the priests;

2 Gå ut til Hinnoms sønns dal, ved inngangen til Potteskårporten, og forkynn der de ordene jeg skal si til deg.

and go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee;

3 Si: Hør Herrens ord, konger av Juda og innbyggere i Jerusalem! Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Se, jeg vil føre ulykke over dette stedet, så det vil klirre i ørene på alle som hører det.

and say, Hear ye the word of Jehovah, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle.

4 Fordi de har forlatt meg, gjort dette stedet fremmed og brent røkelse til andre guder som verken de, deres fedre eller kongene av Juda har kjent, og fylt dette stedet med uskyldiges blod.

Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, that they knew not, they and their fathers and the kings of Judah; and have filled this place with the blood of innocents,

5 De har bygd offerhaugene for Baal for å brenne sine sønner i ilden som brennoffer til Baal, noe jeg ikke har befalt, ikke har talt, det har aldri kommet inn i mitt sinn.

and have built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons in the fire for burnt-offerings unto Baal; which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

6 Derfor, se, de dagene kommer, sier Herren, da dette stedet ikke mer skal kalles Tofet eller Hinnoms sønns dal, men Slaktedal.

therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that this place shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter.

7 Jeg vil gjøre Judas og Jerusalems råd meningsløst på dette stedet, og jeg vil la dem falle for sine fienders sverd og ved hendene til dem som søker deres liv. Deres døde kropper vil jeg gi til mat for himmelens fugler og jordens dyr.

And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies will I give to be food for the birds of the heavens, and for the beasts of the earth.

8 Jeg vil gjøre denne byen til et skrekkens eksempel og en hisselyd; alle som passerer den, skal bli forferdet og hvisle over alle dens plager.

And I will make this city an astonishment, and a hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

9 Jeg vil få dem til å spise kjøttet av sine sønner og døtre, og alle skal spise kjøttet av sin venn i beleiringen og nøden som deres fiender og de som søker deres liv, vil påføre dem.

And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend, in the siege and in the distress, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their life, shall distress them.

10 Da skal du knuse krukken for øynene på mennene som er med deg,

Then shalt thou break the bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee,

11 og si til dem: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: På samme måte vil jeg knuse dette folket og denne byen, slik en pottemaker knuser et kar som ikke kan gjøres helt igjen; og de skal begrave i Tofet til det ikke er mer plass å begrave.

and shalt say unto them, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter's vessel, that cannot be made whole again; and they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place to bury.

12 På denne måten vil jeg gjøre med dette stedet, sier Herren, og med innbyggerne der, og gjøre denne byen lik Tofet.

Thus will I do unto this place, saith Jehovah, and to the inhabitants thereof, even making this city as Topheth:

13 Jerusalems hus og Judas kongers hus, som er gjort urene, skal være som stedet Tofet, det samme gjelder alle hus hvor de har brent røkelse til himmelens hærskare og helt ut drikkoffer til andre guder.

and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, shall be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink-offerings unto other gods.

14 Deretter kom Jeremia fra Tofet, hvor Herren hadde sendt ham for å profetere, og han sto i forgården til Herrens hus og sa til hele folket:

Then came Jeremiah from Topheth, whither Jehovah had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of Jehovah's house, and said to all the people:

15 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Se, jeg vil bringe over denne byen og alle dens bosetninger alt det onde jeg har uttalt mot den, fordi de har gjort sine nakker stive for ikke å høre mine ord.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it; because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.
