1 Dette er ordene i brevet som profeten Jeremia sendte fra Jerusalem til de eldste blant de bortførte, og til prestene, profetene og hele folket som Nebukadnesar hadde ført bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon,

Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders of the captivity, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon,

2 etter at Jekonja, dronningerådgiveren, hoffmennene og stormennene i Juda og Jerusalem, samt håndverkerne og smedene, hadde forlatt Jerusalem,

(after that Jeconiah the king, and the queen-mother, and the eunuchs, `and' the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the craftsmen, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem,)

3 ved hånden til Elasja, sønn av Sjafan, og Gemarja, sønn av Hilkia, som Sidkia, kongen av Juda, sendte til Babylon til Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, med dette budskapet:

by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,) saying,

4 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, til alle bortførte, som jeg lot bli ført bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon:

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive from Jerusalem unto Babylon:

5 Bygg hus og bo i dem; plant hager og spis frukten av dem.

Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

6 Ta koner og få sønner og døtre; ta koner til sønnene deres og gifte bort døtrene deres, slik at de kan få sønner og døtre. Bli mange der og bli ikke færre.

Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply ye there, and be not diminished.

7 Søk fred for byen som jeg har ført dere til, og be til Herren for den, for deres fred avhenger av dens fred.

And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto Jehovah for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

8 For slik sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: La ikke deres profeter som er blant dere, eller deres spåmenn, bedra dere, og hør ikke på drømmene dere får dem til å drømme.

For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets that are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you; neither hearken ye to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

9 For de profeterer løgn for dere i mitt navn, jeg har ikke sendt dem, sier Herren.

For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Jehovah.

10 For slik sier Herren: Når sytti år er gått for Babylon, vil jeg besøke dere og oppfylle mitt løfte om å føre dere tilbake til dette stedet.

For thus saith Jehovah, After seventy years are accomplished for Babylon, I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

11 For jeg vet de tanker jeg tenker om dere, sier Herren, fredens tanker og ikke ulykkens, for å gi dere håp og fremtid.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope in your latter end.

12 Dere skal påkalle meg og gå til meg og be til meg, og jeg skal høre dere.

And ye shall call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

13 Dere skal søke meg og finne meg når dere søker meg av hele deres hjerte.

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

14 Jeg vil la dere finne meg, sier Herren, og jeg vil vende deres skjebne. Jeg vil samle dere fra alle folkene og stedene jeg har spredt dere til, sier Herren, og jeg vil føre dere tilbake til det stedet jeg førte dere bort fra.

And I will be found of you, saith Jehovah, and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places wither I have driven you, saith Jehovah; and I will bring you again unto the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

15 Fordi dere har sagt: 'Herren har vekket opp profeter for oss i Babylon,'

Because ye have said, Jehovah hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

16 så sier Herren om kongen som sitter på Davids trone, og om hele folket som bor i denne byen, deres brødre som ikke fulgte med dere i eksilet:

thus saith Jehovah concerning the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and concerning all the people that dwell in this city, your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

17 Slik sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Se, jeg vil la sverdet, hungeren og pesten komme over dem, og jeg vil gjøre dem til verdiløse fikener som ikke kan spises fordi de er så dårlige.

thus saith Jehovah of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so bad.

18 Jeg vil forfølge dem med sverdet, hungeren og pesten, og gi dem til spott blant alle kongerikene på jorden, til en forbannelse og et skremsel, til hån og vanære blant alle folkene hvor jeg har drevet dem bort,

And I will pursue after them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, to be an execration, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them;

19 fordi de ikke har hørt mine ord, sier Herren, som jeg sendte til dem ved mine tjenere profetene, som jeg tidlig sendte, men de ville ikke høre, sier Herren.

because they have not hearkened to my words, saith Jehovah, wherewith I sent unto them my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith Jehovah.

20 Hør derfor Herrens ord, alle dere bortførte som jeg har sendt bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon.

Hear ye therefore the word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

21 Slik sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, om Akab, sønn av Kolaja, og om Sidkia, sønn av Maaseja, som profeterer løgn for dere i mitt navn: Se, jeg vil overgi dem i hendene på Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, og han skal drepe dem for deres øyne.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie unto you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

22 Fra dem skal en forbannelse tas opp av alle de bortførte fra Juda i Babylon og sies: 'Måtte Herren gjøre deg som Sidkia og Akab, som kongen av Babylon brente i ilden,'

and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Judah that are in Babylon, saying, Jehovah make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

23 fordi de har handlet skamløst i Israel og begått ekteskapsbrudd med sine naboers koner og talt i mitt navn løgnaktige ord, som jeg ikke hadde befalt. Jeg vet det og er vitne, sier Herren.

because they have wrought folly in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' wives, and have spoken words in my name falsely, which I commanded them not; and I am he that knoweth, and am witness, saith Jehovah.

24 Om Sjemaja, Nehelamitten, skal du tale og si:

And concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou shalt speak, saying,

25 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Fordi du har sendt brev i ditt eget navn til hele folket i Jerusalem og til Sefanja, sønn av Maaseja, presten, og til alle prestene, med ordene:

Thus speaketh Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thine own name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

26 Herren har gjort deg til prest i stedet for Jojada, presten, for at det skal være arbeidsformenn i Herrens hus for hver gal mann som gjør seg til profet, slik at du kan sette ham i stokker og bånd.

Jehovah hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there may be officers in the house of Jehovah, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in shackles.

27 Hvorfor har du da ikke refset Jeremia fra Anatot, som gjør seg til profet for dere,

Now therefore, why hast thou not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth, who maketh himself a prophet to you,

28 ettersom han har sendt til oss i Babylon og sagt: 'Eksilet er langt: Bygg hus og bo i dem, plant hager og spis frukten av dem'?

forasmuch as he hath sent unto us in Babylon, saying, `The captivity' is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?

29 Og presten Sefanja leste dette brevet for profeten Jeremia.

And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

30 Da kom Herrens ord til Jeremia og sa:

Then came the word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,

31 Send til alle de bortførte og si: Så sier Herren om Sjemaja, Nehelamitten: Fordi Sjemaja har profetert for dere, og jeg ikke har sendt ham, og han har fått dere til å stole på en løgn,

Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he hath caused you to trust in a lie;

32 derfor sier Herren: Se, jeg vil straffe Sjemaja, Nehelamitten, og hans slekt; han skal ikke ha noen mann blant dette folket, og han skal ikke få se det gode jeg vil gjøre for mitt folk, sier Herren, fordi han har talt opprør mot Herren.

therefore thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he behold the good that I will do unto my people, saith Jehovah, because he hath spoken rebellion against Jehovah.
