1 Og Sjefatja, Mattans sønn, og Gedalja, Pashhurs sønn, og Jukal, Sjelemja sønn, og Pashhur, Malkijas sønn, hørte ordene som Jeremia talte til hele folket og sa:

And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spake unto all the people, saying,

2 Så sier Herren: Den som blir i denne byen skal dø ved sverd, av sult og pest; men den som går over til kaldeerne skal leve, og han skal få sitt liv til bytte og leve.

Thus saith Jehovah, He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey, and he shall live.

3 Så sier Herren: Denne byen skal i sannhet bli overgitt til kongen av Babylons hær, og han skal innta den.

Thus saith Jehovah, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

4 Da sa fyrstene til kongen: Vi ber deg, la denne mannen dø, for med sine ord svekker han hendene til krigerne som er igjen i denne byen, og hendene til alt folket, ved å tale slik til dem. For denne mannen søker ikke folkets velstand, men dets skade.

Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

5 Og kong Sidkia sa: Se, han er i deres hender; for kongen er ikke den som kan gjøre noe mot dere.

And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do anything against you.

6 Så tok de Jeremia og kastet ham i cisternen til Malkija, kongens sønn, som var i vaktgården. De senket Jeremia ned med tau. Men i cisternen var det ikke vann, bare gjørme, og Jeremia sank ned i gjørmen.

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

7 Men da Ebed-Melek, etioperen, en hoffmann som var i kongens hus, hørte at de hadde satt Jeremia i cisternen (kongen satt da i Benjamins port),

Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin,)

8 gikk Ebed-Melek ut fra kongens hus og talte til kongen og sa:

Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying,

9 Herre konge, disse mennene har gjort urett i alt de har gjort mot profeten Jeremia, som de har kastet i cisternen; der vil han dø av sult, for det er ikke mer brød i byen.

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.

10 Så befalte kongen Ebed-Melek, etioperen, og sa: Ta med deg tretti menn herfra og dra opp profeten Jeremia fra cisternen før han dør.

Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

11 Så tok Ebed-Melek mennene med seg, gikk inn i kongens hus under skattkammeret og hentet filler og utslitte klær. Han lot dem senkes ned med tau til Jeremia i cisternen.

So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 Og Ebed-Melek, etioperen, sa til Jeremia: Legg disse fillene og de utslitte klærne under armene dine, under tauene. Og Jeremia gjorde slik.

And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 Så dro de Jeremia opp med tauene og tok ham opp av cisternen. Og Jeremia ble værende i vaktgården.

So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

14 Da sendte kong Sidkia bud og tok Jeremia profeten til seg i den tredje inngangen til Herrens hus. Og kongen sa til Jeremia: Jeg vil spørre deg om en ting; skjul ingenting for meg.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

15 Jeremia sa til Sidkia: Hvis jeg forteller deg det, vil du da ikke helt sikkert drepe meg? Og hvis jeg gir deg råd, vil du ikke høre på meg.

Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.

16 Så sverget kong Sidkia hemmelig for Jeremia og sa: Så sant Herren lever, han som ga oss denne sjelen, jeg vil ikke drepe deg, og jeg skal ikke gi deg i hendene på disse mennene som søker ditt liv.

So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

17 Så sa Jeremia til Sidkia: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Hvis du går ut til Babylons konges fyrster, skal ditt liv bli spart, og denne byen skal ikke bli brent med ild; du skal leve, du og ditt hus.

Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house.

18 Men hvis du ikke vil gå ut til Babylons konges fyrster, skal denne byen bli overgitt i kaldeernes hender, og de skal brenne den med ild, og du skal ikke unnslippe deres hånd.

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

19 Kong Sidkia sa til Jeremia: Jeg er redd for jødene som har gått over til kaldeerne, at de skal overgi meg i deres hendene, og at de skal spotte meg.

And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

20 Men Jeremia sa: De skal ikke overgi deg. Hør, jeg ber deg, på Herrens røst i det jeg taler til deg; så skal det gå deg godt, og ditt liv skal bli spart.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live.

21 Men hvis du nekter å gå ut, er dette ordet som Herren har vist meg:

But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah hath showed me:

22 Se, alle kvinnene som er igjen i Judas konges hus skal bli ført ut til Babylons konges fyrster, og disse kvinnene skal si: De vennene du stolte på har villedet deg og fått overtak på deg. 'Nå som' dine føtter er sunket i gjørmen, har de vendt seg bort.

behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee: `now that' thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

23 Og de skal føre ut alle dine koner og dine barn til kaldeerne, og du skal ikke unnslippe deres hånd, men blir tatt av Babylons konge; og du skal forårsake at denne byen blir brent med ild.

And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans; and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

24 Så sa Sidkia til Jeremia: La ingen vite om disse ordene, så blir du ikke drept.

Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

25 Men hvis fyrstene hører at jeg har talt med deg, og de kommer til deg og sier: Fortell oss hva du sa til kongen; skjul det ikke for oss, så skal vi ikke drepe deg; og hva kongen sa til deg:

But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

26 da skal du si til dem: Jeg la fram min bønn for kongen, om at han ikke skulle la meg vende tilbake til Jonatans hus for å dø der.

then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

27 Så kom alle fyrstene til Jeremia og spurte ham; og han fortalte dem alt i henhold til disse ordene som kongen hadde befalt. Så lot de være å snakke mer med ham; for saken var ikke avgjort.

Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

28 Så ble Jeremia i vaktgården til den dagen da Jerusalem ble tatt.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.
