1 Ordet som kom til Jeremia fra Herren, etter at Nebuzaradan, øversten for livvakten, hadde latt ham gå fra Rama, da han hadde tatt ham som fange blant alle fangene fra Jerusalem og Juda, som ble ført bort til Babylon.

The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, that were carried away captive unto Babylon.

2 Og øversten for livvakten tok Jeremia og sa til ham: Herren din Gud har forkynt denne ulykke over dette stedet.

And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, Jehovah thy God pronounced this evil upon this place;

3 Og Herren har brakt den, og gjort som han sa: Fordi dere har syndet mot Herren og ikke adlydt hans røst, derfor har dette skjedd dere.

and Jehovah hath brought it, and done according as he spake: because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

4 Og nå, se, jeg løser deg i dag fra lenkene som er på hendene dine. Hvis du synes det er godt å komme med meg til Babylon, så kom, og jeg vil ta vel vare på deg; men hvis det ikke synes deg godt å komme med meg til Babylon, så la det være: Se, hele landet ligger foran deg; hvor det synes godt og riktig for deg å gå, dit kan du gå.

And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which are upon thy hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will look well unto thee; but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and right unto thee to go, thither go.

5 Så mens han ennå ikke hadde dratt tilbake, sa han: Gå da til Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, sønn av Sjafan, som kongen av Babylon har gjort til stattholder over byene i Juda, og bli hos ham blant folket; eller gå hvor det synes deg best å gå. Så ga øversten for livvakten ham mat og en gave, og lot ham gå.

Now while he was not yet gone back, Go back then, `said he', to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wheresoever it seemeth right unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a present, and let him go.

6 Så dro Jeremia til Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, til Mispa, og bodde hos ham blant folket som var igjen i landet.

Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

7 Da alle hærførerne som var i feltene, de og deres menn, hørte at kongen av Babylon hadde gjort Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, til stattholder i landet, og hadde betrodd ham menn, kvinner og barn, og de fattigste i landet, dem som ikke var ført bort til Babylon;

Now when all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;

8 så kom de til Gedalja i Mispa, nemlig Ismael, sønn av Netanja, og Johanan og Jonatan, sønner av Koreah, og Seraja, sønn av Tankhumet, og sønnene av Efai, netofatitten, og Ja'azanja, sønn av ma'akathitten, de og deres menn.

then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, `to wit', Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

9 Og Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, sønn av Sjafan, sverget til dem og deres menn, og sa: Frykt ikke for å tjene kaldeerne: bo i landet, og tjen kongen av Babylon, så skal det gå dere vel.

And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

10 Når det gjelder meg, se, jeg vil bo i Mispa for å stå foran kaldeerne som kommer til oss: men dere, sank dere vin og sommerfrukt og olje, og legg dem i deres kar, og bo i de byene dere har tatt.

As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans that shall come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.

11 Da alle jødene som var i Moab, og blant Ammons barn, og i Edom, og som var i alle landene, hørte at kongen av Babylon hadde etterlatt en rest av Juda, og at han hadde satt Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, sønn av Sjafan, over dem;

Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;

12 så vendte alle jødene tilbake fra alle steder hvor de var fordrevet, og kom til Juda, til Gedalja, til Mispa, og sanket inn mye vin og sommerfrukt.

then all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.

13 Dessuten kom Johanan, sønn av Koreah, og alle hærførerne som var i feltene, til Gedalja i Mispa,

Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,

14 og sa til ham: Vet du at Baalis, kongen av Ammons barn, har sendt Ismael, sønn av Netanja, for å ta ditt liv? Men Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, trodde dem ikke.

and said unto him, Dost thou know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take thy life? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.

15 Da talte Johanan, sønn av Koreah, til Gedalja i Mispa i hemmelighet og sa: La meg gå, jeg ber deg, og slå Ismael, sønn av Netanja, så ingen skal vite det: hvorfor skal han ta ditt liv, slik at alle jødene som er samlet hos deg skal bli spredt, og resten av Juda gå til grunne?

Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he take thy life, that all the Jews that are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?

16 Men Gedalja, sønn av Ahikam, sa til Johanan, sønn av Koreah, Du skal ikke gjøre dette; for du taler usant om Ismael.

But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing; for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.
