1 Ordet som kom til Jeremia om alle jødene som bodde i landet Egypt, som bodde ved Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memfis og i landstripen Patros, var som følger:

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews that dwelt in the land of Egypt, that dwelt at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying,

2 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Dere har sett alt det onde jeg har brakt over Jerusalem og alle byene i Juda. Se, de er i dag øde og tomme, ingen bor i dem,

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth therein,

3 på grunn av ondskapen deres som de har begått for å vekke min vrede, ved å brenne røkelse og tjene andre guder som de ikke kjente, verken de, dere eller deres fedre.

because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, `and' to serve other gods, that they knew not, neither they, nor ye, nor your fathers.

4 Likevel sendte jeg til dere alle mine tjenere, profetene, tidlig om morgenen, og sa: Å, gjør ikke dette avskyelige som jeg hater.

Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.

5 Men de lyttet ikke og vendte ikke øret mot meg for å vende seg bort fra sin ondskap og slutte å brenne røkelse til andre guder.

But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense unto other gods.

6 Derfor ble min harme og vrede utøst og flammet opp i byene i Juda og gatene i Jerusalem, og de ble lagt øde og tomme, som de er i dag.

Wherefore my wrath and mine anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.

7 Derfor, så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Hvorfor gjør dere denne store ondskapen mot deres egne sjeler, for å utrydde fra dere mann og kvinne, barn og spedbarn, fra Juda, for å etterlate dere uten noen igjen?

Therefore now thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: Wherefore commit ye `this' great evil against your own souls, to cut off from you man and woman, infant and suckling, out of the midst of Judah, to leave you none remaining;

8 Når dere vekker min vrede med deres gjerninger, ved å brenne røkelse til andre guder i Egypt, dit dere har reist for å bo, skal dere bli utslettet, og dere skal bli en forbannelse og skam blant alle jordens folkeslag.

in that ye provoke me unto anger with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye are gone to sojourn; that ye may be cut off, and that ye may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

9 Har dere glemt deres fedres ondskap, Judas kongers ondskap, deres kvinners ondskap, og deres egen ondskap, og deres kvinners ondskap som de har begått i Judas land og Jerusalems gater?

Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives which they committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

10 De er ikke ydmyket til denne dag, og de har verken fryktet eller vandret i min lov eller mine forskrifter, som jeg har fremholdt for dere og deres fedre.

They are not humbled even unto this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.

11 Derfor sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Se, jeg vil sette mitt ansikt mot dere for ulykke, for å utrydde hele Juda.

Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Judah.

12 Og jeg vil ta resten av Juda, de som har bestemt seg for å dra til Egypt for å bo der, og de skal alle omkomme; i Egypt skal de falle; de skal bli utslettet ved sverd og sult; de skal dø, fra den minste til den største, ved sverd og sult, og de skal bli en forbannelse, en forferdelse, en forbannelse og en skam.

And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed; in the land of Egypt shall they fall; they shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine; they shall die, from the least even unto the greatest, by the sword and by the famine; and they shall be an execration, `and' an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.

13 For jeg vil straffe dem som bor i Egypt, slik jeg straffet Jerusalem, med sverd, sult og pest;

For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence;

14 slik at ingen av de som har dratt til Egypt for å bo der skal slippe unna eller bli igjen, for å vende tilbake til Juda, som de ønsker å vende tilbake for å bo der: for ingen skal vende tilbake, bortsett fra noen få flyktninger.

so that none of the remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or be left, to return into the land of Judah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return save such as shall escape.

15 Da svarte alle mennene som visste at deres hustruer brente røkelse til andre guder, og alle kvinnene som sto der, en stor folkemengde, og alle som bodde i Egypt, i Patros, og sa til Jeremia:

Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense unto other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great assembly, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,

16 Ordet som du har talt til oss i Herrens navn, vil vi ikke høre på.

As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of Jehovah, we will not hearken unto thee.

17 Men vi vil utføre hvert ord som er blitt uttalt av oss, å brenne røkelse til himmelens dronning og å utøse drikkoffer til henne, som vi har gjort, vi og våre fedre, våre konger og våre fyrster, i Judas byer og Jerusalems gater. For da hadde vi rikelig med mat, og vi hadde det godt og så ingen ulykke.

But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

18 Men siden vi sluttet å brenne røkelse til himmelens dronning og å utøse drikkoffer til henne, har vi manglet alt, og har blitt fortært av sverd og sult.

But since we left off burning incense to the queen of heaven, and pouring out drink-offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

19 Og når vi brente røkelse til himmelens dronning og utøste drikkoffer til henne, laget vi henne kaker for å tilbe henne og utøste drikkoffer til henne, uten våre menn?

And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink-offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink-offerings unto her, without our husbands?

20 Da sa Jeremia til hele folket, til mennene og kvinnene, ja til hele folket som hadde gitt ham det svaret, og sa:

Then Jeremiah said unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, even to all the people that had given him that answer, saying,

21 Røkelsen som dere brente i Judas byer og Jerusalems gater, dere og deres fedre, deres konger og deres fyrster og folket i landet, kom ikke Herren det i hu, og kom det ikke opp i hans tanker?

The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not Jehovah remember them, and came it not into his mind?

22 så Herren ikke lenger kunne tåle de onde handlingene deres og avskyelighetene dere har gjort; derfor er landet ditt blitt en ødeleggelse, en forundring og en forbannelse, uten innbyggere, slik det er i dag.

so that Jehovah could not longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.

23 Fordi dere har brent røkelse og syndet mot Herren, og ikke lyttet til Herrens røst, eller vandret i hans lov, forskrifter eller vitnesbyrd, har derfor denne ondskapen kommet over dere, slik det er i dag.

Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as it is this day.

24 Videre sa Jeremia til hele folket, og til alle kvinnene: Hør Herrens ord, hele Juda som er i Egypt:

Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of Jehovah, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:

25 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, dere og deres hustruer har både talt med deres munn, og med deres hender har dere oppfylt det og sagt: Vi vil sikkert oppfylle våre løfter som vi har lovet, å brenne røkelse til himmelens dronning og å utøse drikkoffer til henne: oppfyll så deres løfter, og utfør deres løfter.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto her: establish then your vows, and perform your vows.

26 Derfor, hør Herrens ord, hele Juda som bor i Egypt: Se, jeg har sverget ved mitt store navn, sier Herren, at mitt navn aldri mer skal nevnes i Judas manns munn i hele Egypt, og si: Så sant Herren lever.

Therefore hear ye the word of Jehovah, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith Jehovah, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, As the Lord Jehovah liveth.

27 Se, jeg våker over dem for ulykke, ikke for det gode; og alle mennene av Juda som er i Egypt, skal bli fortært av sverd og sult, til de er borte.

Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.

28 Og de som slipper unna sverdet, skal vende tilbake fra Egypt til Juda, med få i antall; og hele resten av Juda, som har gått til Egypt for å bo der, skal vite hvis ord som skal stå, mine eller deres.

And they that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose word shall stand, mine, or theirs.

29 Og dette skal være tegnet for dere, sier Herren, at jeg vil straffe dere på dette stedet, for at dere skal vite at mine ord skal stå mot dere for ulykke:

And this shall be the sign unto you, saith Jehovah, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:

30 Så sier Herren: Se, jeg vil gi farao Hofra, kongen av Egypt, i hendene på hans fiender, og i hendene på dem som søker hans liv, slik jeg ga Sidkia, kongen av Juda, i hendene på Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, som var hans fiende og søkte hans liv.

Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy, and sought his life.
