1 Ordet som kom til Jeremia fra Herren, og sa,

The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

2 Stå i porten til Herrens hus og forkynn dette ordet der, og si: Hør Herrens ord, alle dere i Juda, som går inn gjennom disse portene for å tilbe Herren.

Stand in the gate of Jehovah's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of Jehovah, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship Jehovah.

3 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Forbedre deres veier og deres gjerninger, så vil jeg la dere bo på dette stedet.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

4 Stol ikke på falske ord, som sier: Herrens tempel, Herrens tempel, Herrens tempel, er dette.

Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah, are these.

5 For dersom dere virkelig forbedrer deres veier og deres gjerninger; dersom dere virkelig utfører rettferdighet mellom en mann og hans nabo;

For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor;

6 dersom dere ikke undertrykker den fremmede, den farløse og enken, og ikke utøser uskyldig blod på dette stedet, og ikke følger andre guder til deres eget fall:

if ye oppress not the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your own hurt:

7 da skal jeg la dere bo på dette stedet, i landet som jeg ga deres fedre, fra gammelt av til evig tid.

then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, from of old even for evermore.

8 Se, dere stoler på falske ord, som ikke kan gagne.

Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.

9 Vil dere stjele, drepe og begå ekteskapsbrudd, sverge falskt, brenne røkelse for Baal og følge andre guder som dere ikke har kjent,

Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods that ye have not known,

10 og så komme og stå foran meg i dette huset, som er kalt med mitt navn, og si: Vi er reddet; for at dere kan gjøre alle disse vederstyggeligheter?

and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered; that ye may do all these abominations?

11 Er dette huset, som er kalt med mitt navn, blitt en røverhule i deres øyne? Se, jeg, ja jeg, har sett det, sier Herren.

Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it, saith Jehovah.

12 Men gå nå til mitt sted som var i Shilo, hvor jeg først lot mitt navn bo, og se hva jeg gjorde med det for mitt folks Israels ondskap.

But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I caused my name to dwell at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

13 Og nå, fordi dere har gjort alle disse verkene, sier Herren, og jeg talte til dere, stod opp tidlig og talte, men dere hørte ikke; og jeg kalte på dere, men dere svarte ikke:

And now, because ye have done all these works, saith Jehovah, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not:

14 derfor vil jeg gjøre med det huset som er kalt med mitt navn, som dere stoler på, og med stedet som jeg ga til dere og deres fedre, som jeg gjorde med Shilo.

therefore will I do unto the house which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.

15 Og jeg vil kaste dere ut av mitt åsyn, slik som jeg kastet ut alle deres brødre, hele Efraims ætt.

And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

16 Derfor skal du ikke be for dette folket, heller ikke løfte en bønn eller en forbønn for dem; for jeg vil ikke høre på deg.

Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me; for I will not hear thee.

17 Ser du ikke hva de gjør i byene i Juda og i gatene i Jerusalem?

Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

18 Barna samler ved, og fedrene tenner ilden, og kvinnene elter deigen for å lage kaker til himmeldronningen, og for å utøse drikkoffer til andre guder, for å vekke meg til vrede.

The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

19 Vekker de meg til vrede? sier Herren; vekker de ikke seg selv, til skam for sine egne ansikter?

Do they provoke me to anger? saith Jehovah; `do they' not `provoke' themselves, to the confusion of their own faces?

20 Derfor sier Herren Gud: Se, min vrede og min harme skal utøses over dette stedet, over mennesker og over dyr, over markens trær og over frukten av jorden; det skal brenne og skal ikke slukkes.

Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Behold, mine anger and my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched.

21 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Legg deres brennoffer til deres slaktoffer, og spis kjøttet.

Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt-offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat ye flesh.

22 For jeg talte ikke til deres fedre, og gav dem ikke befaling den dagen jeg førte dem ut av Egypts land, om brennoffer eller offer:

For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt-offerings or sacrifices:

23 men dette befalte jeg dem, og sa: Hør på min røst, så vil jeg være deres Gud, og dere skal være mitt folk; og vandre på hele den veien jeg byr dere, så det kan gå dere vel.

but this thing I commanded them, saying, Hearken unto my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people; and walk ye in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.

24 Men de ville ikke høre, heller ikke bøyde de sitt øre, men fulgte sine egne råd og sin onde hjertes trass, og gikk bakover, og ikke fremover.

But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in `their own' counsels `and' in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

25 Fra den dagen deres fedre gikk ut av Egypts land til i dag har jeg sendt til dere alle mine tjenere, profetene, daglig, tidlig og sendte dem:

Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day, I have sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:

26 men de hørte ikke på meg, heller ikke bøyde de sitt øre, men gjorde sine nakker stive: de gjorde verre enn deres fedre.

yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff: they did worse than their fathers.

27 Og du skal tale alle disse ordene til dem; men de vil ikke høre på deg: du skal også rope til dem; men de vil ikke svare deg.

And thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.

28 Og du skal si til dem: Dette er nasjonen som ikke har lyttet til Herrens, deres Guds, røst, heller ikke mottatt instruksjon: sannheten har gått tapt, og er avskåret fra deres munn.

And thou shalt say unto them, This is the nation that hath not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah their God, nor received instruction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

29 Klipp av ditt hår, Jerusalem, og kast det bort, og stem en klagesang på de nakne høydene; for Herren har forkastet og forlatt denne generasjon av sin vrede.

Cut off thy hair, `O Jerusalem', and cast it away, and take up a lamentation on the bare heights; for Jehovah hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

30 For Judas barn har gjort det som er ondt i mine øyne, sier Herren: de har satt sine vederstyggeligheter i huset som er kalt med mitt navn, for å vanhellige det.

For the children of Judah have done that which is evil in my sight, saith Jehovah: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to defile it.

31 Og de har bygget offerhaugene i Tofet, som er i Hinnoms sønns dal, for å brenne sine sønner og sine døtre i ilden; noe jeg ikke har befalt, og heller ikke tenkt meg.

And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded not, neither came it into my mind.

32 Derfor, se, det kommer dager, sier Herren, at det ikke mer skal kalles Tofet, eller Hinnoms sønns dal, men Drapsdalen: for de skal begrave i Tofet til det ikke finnes mer plass.

Therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that it shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter: for they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place `to bury'.

33 Og likene av dette folket skal være føde for himmelens fugler og for jordens dyr; og ingen skal jage dem bort.

And the dead bodies of this people shall be food for the birds of the heavens, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall frighten them away.

34 Da vil jeg gjøre slutt på gleden og jubelen i Judas byer og Jerusalems gater, brudgommens røst og brudens røst; for landet skal bli en øde.

Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become a waste.
