1 Etter Josvas død spurte Israels barn Herren: Hvem skal gå opp først for oss mot kanaaneerne for å kjempe mot dem?

And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of Jehovah, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?

2 Og Herren sa: Juda skal gå opp. Se, jeg har gitt landet i hans hånd.

And Jehovah said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

3 Og Juda sa til sin bror Simeon: Kom opp med meg til mitt lodd, så vi kan kjempe mot kanaaneerne; så vil jeg også gå med deg til ditt lodd. Så Simeon gikk med ham.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

4 Juda dro opp, og Herren overga kanaaneerne og perisittene i deres hånd, og de slo dem ved Besek, ti tusen menn.

And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

5 De fant Adoni-Besek i Besek; de kjempet mot ham og slo kanaaneerne og perisittene.

And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

6 Men Adoni-Besek flyktet, og de fulgte etter ham, tok ham, og hugget av ham tomlene og stortærne.

But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

7 Da sa Adoni-Besek: Sytti konger med avhuggede tomler og stortær samlet mat under mitt bord. Som jeg har gjort, har Gud gjengjeldt meg. Og de førte ham til Jerusalem, og der døde han.

And Adoni-bezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered `their food' under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

8 Og Judas barn kjempet mot Jerusalem, inntok det, og slo byen med sverdets egg, og satte byen i brann.

And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

9 Deretter drog Judas barn ned for å kjempe mot kanaaneerne som bodde i fjellandet, i sør og i lavlandet.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt in the hill-country, and in the South, and in the lowland.

10 Juda dro også mot kanaaneerne som bodde i Hebron (Hebrons navn var tidligere Kiriat-Arba), og de slo Sjesjai, Ahiman og Talmai.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron beforetime was Kiriath-arba); and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

11 Og derfra dro han mot innbyggerne i Debir (Debirs navn var tidligere Kiriat-Sefer).

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (Now the name of Debir beforetime was Kiriath-sepher.)

12 Og Kaleb sa: Den som slår Kiriat-Sefer og inntar det, til ham vil jeg gi Aksa, min datter, til kone.

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kiriath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

13 Og Otniel, sønn av Kenas, Kalebs yngre bror, inntok det; og han ga ham Aksa, sin datter, til kone.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

14 Da hun kom til ham, overtalte hun ham til å be hennes far om en åker; og hun steg ned fra eselet, og Kaleb sa til henne: Hva ønsker du?

And it came to pass, when she came `unto him', that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wouldest thou?

15 Hun svarte: Gi meg en velsignelse; siden du har satt meg i Sørlandet, gi meg også vannkilder. Og Kaleb ga henne de øvre kilder og de nedre kilder.

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for that thou hast set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

16 Kenittenes barn, Moses' svigerfar, dro opp fra Palmbyen med Judas barn inn i Judas ørken sør for Arad, og de bosatte seg blant folket.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses' brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.

17 Og Juda dro med sin bror Simeon, og de slo kanaaneerne som bodde i Sefat, og fullstendig ødela det. Og byen ble kalt Horma.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

18 Juda tok også Gaza med sin grense, og Asjkelon med sin grense, og Ekron med sin grense.

Also Judah took Gaza with the border thereof, and Ashkelon with the border thereof, and Ekron with the border thereof.

19 Og Herren var med Juda, og de drev bort beboerne i fjellandet, men de kunne ikke drive ut beboerne i dalen, for de hadde stridsvogner av jern.

And Jehovah was with Judah; and drove out `the inhabitants of' the hill-country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

20 Hebron ga de til Kaleb, som Moses hadde sagt, og han drev bort de tre anakittenes sønner derfra.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.

21 Men Benjamins barn drev ikke ut jebusittene som bodde i Jerusalem; så jebusittene bor sammen med Benjamins barn i Jerusalem til denne dag.

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

22 Josefs hus dro også opp mot Betel, og Herren var med dem.

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.

23 Og Josefs hus sendte speidere til Betel. (Byens navn var tidligere Lus.)

And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)

24 Speiderne så en mann gå ut av byen og sa til ham: Vis oss inngangen til byen, så skal vi gjøre vel mot deg.

And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.

25 Og han viste dem inngangen til byen, og de slo byen med sverdet, men lot mannen og hele hans familie gå.

And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

26 Mannen dro til hetittenes land, bygde en by der og kalte den Lus, og det er dens navn til denne dag.

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

27 Men Manasse drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Bet-Sjean og dens byer, heller ikke Taanak og dens byer, eller innbyggerne i Dor og dens byer, eller innbyggerne i Jibleam og dens byer, eller innbyggerne i Megiddo og dens byer; men kanaaneerne ble værende i landet.

And Manasseh did not drive out `the inhabitants of' Beth-shean and its towns, nor `of' Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

28 Da Israel ble sterkt, tvang de kanaaneerne til å arbeide for seg, men drev dem ikke helt ut.

And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

29 Efraim drev heller ikke ut kanaaneerne som bodde i Gezer, så kanaaneerne bodde blant dem i Gezer.

And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

30 Sebulon drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Kitron, heller ikke innbyggerne i Nahalal; så kanaaneerne bodde blant dem og ble tvunget til arbeid.

Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

31 Asjer drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Akko, heller ikke innbyggerne i Sidon, eller Ahlab, eller Aksib, eller Helba, eller Afik, eller Rehob.

Asher drove not out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;

32 Asjers barn bodde blant kanaaneerne, landets innbyggere, for de drev dem ikke ut.

but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.

33 Naftali drev ikke ut innbyggerne i Bet-Semesj eller innbyggerne i Bet-Anat; men bodde blant kanaaneerne, landets innbyggere; men innbyggerne i Bet-Semesj og Bet-Anat ble tvunget til arbeid.

Naphtali drove not out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to taskwork.

34 Amorittene trengte Dans barn opp i fjellandet, for de lot dem ikke komme ned til dalen.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill-country; for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley;

35 Amorittene ble værende på Heresfjellet, i Ajalon og i Saalbim, men Josefs hus ble sterkere, så Amorittene ble tvunget til arbeid.

but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to taskwork.

36 Grensen til amorittene gikk fra Akrabbim-skaret, fra klippen og oppover.

And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
