1 Nå var Jefta, Gileaditten, en mektig kriger, og han var sønn av en skjøge. Gilead fikk Jefta.

Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

2 Gileads kone fødte sønner, og da hans kones sønner vokste opp, drev de Jefta bort og sa til ham: Du skal ikke arve i vår fars hus, for du er sønn av en annen kvinne.

And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of another woman.

3 Da flyktet Jefta fra sine brødre og bodde i landet Tob. Der samlet det seg løse karer rundt Jefta, og de dro ut med ham.

Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.

4 Så skjedde det en tid senere at ammonittene førte krig mot Israel.

And it came to pass after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

5 Og da ammonittene angrep Israel, dro de eldste i Gilead for å hente Jefta fra landet Tob.

And it was so, that, when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob;

6 De sa til Jefta: Kom og bli vår leder, så vi kan kjempe mot ammonittene.

and they said unto Jephthah, Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

7 Jefta sa til de eldste i Gilead: Hatet dere meg ikke og drev meg bort fra min fars hus? Hvorfor kommer dere til meg nå, når dere er i nød?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

8 De eldste i Gilead sa til Jefta: Derfor har vi nå vendt oss til deg, slik at du kan gå med oss og kjempe mot ammonittene, og du skal bli vår leder for alle innbyggerne i Gilead.

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore are we turned again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and thou shalt be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

9 Da sa Jefta til de eldste i Gilead: Hvis dere bringer meg tilbake for å kjempe mot ammonittene, og Herren gir dem i min hånd, skal jeg da bli deres leder?

And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Jehovah deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

10 De eldste i Gilead sa til Jefta: Herren skal være vitne mellom oss; sannelig, ifølge dine ord skal vi gjøre.

And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Jehovah shall be witness between us; surely according to thy word so will we do.

11 Da dro Jefta med de eldste i Gilead, og folket gjorde ham til leder og høvding over dem. Jefta uttalte alle sine ord for Herren i Mispa.

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spake all his words before Jehovah in Mizpah.

12 Jefta sendte budbringere til ammonittenes konge og sa: Hva har du med meg å gjøre, siden du har kommet for å kjempe mot mitt land?

And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?

13 Ammonittenes konge svarte Jeftas budbringere: Fordi Israel tok mitt land da de kom opp fra Egypt, fra Arnon til Jabbok og til Jordan. Nå, derfor, gi tilbake disse landområdene fredelig.

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan: now therefore restore those `lands' again peaceably.

14 Jefta sendte igjen budbringere til ammonittenes konge.

And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon;

15 Han sa til ham: Så sier Jefta: Israel tok ikke moabittenes land eller ammonittenes land.

and he said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah: Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

16 Men da de kom opp fra Egypt, dro Israel gjennom ørkenen til Rødehavet og kom til Kades.

but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

17 Da sendte Israel budbringere til Edoms konge og sa: La meg, jeg ber deg, gå gjennom ditt land; men Edoms konge lyttet ikke. De sendte også til Moabs konge, men han ville ikke; så Israel ble i Kades.

then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land; but the king of Edom hearkened not. And in like manner he sent unto the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

18 Deretter dro de gjennom ørkenen og gikk rundt Edoms og Moabs land, og kom til østsiden av Moabs land og slo leir på den andre siden av Arnon; men de kom ikke innenfor Moabs grense, for Arnon er Moabs grense.

Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they came not within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

19 Israel sendte budbringere til Sihon, amorittenes konge, kongen i Hesbon, og Israel sa til ham: La oss, jeg ber deg, gå gjennom ditt land til vårt sted.

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.

20 Men Sihon stolte ikke på at Israel skulle passere gjennom hans land, så Sihon samlet hele sitt folk og slo leir i Jahas og kjempet mot Israel.

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

21 Herren, Israels Gud, overgav Sihon og hele hans folk i Israels hånd, og de slo dem. Så Israel besatte hele amorittenes land, innbyggerne i det landet.

And Jehovah, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

22 De besatte hele amorittenes område, fra Arnon til Jabbok, og fra ørkenen til Jordan.

And they possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.

23 Så nå har Herren, Israels Gud, drevet ut amorittene foran sitt folk, Israel, og du skulle ta dem i eie?

So now Jehovah, the God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess them?

24 Vil ikke du eie det som Kemosj, din gud, gir deg å eie? Så hvem som helst vår Gud, Herren, har drevet ut foran oss, dem vil vi eie.

Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

25 Er du nå noe bedre enn Balak, Sippors sønn, kongen av Moab? Stridet han noen gang mot Israel, eller kjempet han noen gang mot dem?

And now art thou anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

26 Mens Israel bodde i Hesbon og dens byer, og i Aroer og dens byer, og i alle byene langs Arnon i tre hundre år; hvorfor gjenvant dere dem ikke i løpet av den tiden?

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; wherefore did ye not recover them within that time?

27 Jeg har derfor ikke syndet mot deg, men du gjør urett mot meg ved å føre krig mot meg. La Herren, dommeren, dømme i dag mellom Israels barn og ammonittenes barn.

I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

28 Men ammonittenes konge lyttet ikke til ordene Jefta sendte ham.

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

29 Herrens Ånd kom over Jefta, og han dro over Gilead og Manasse, og dro over Mispe i Gilead, og fra Mispe i Gilead drog han over til ammonittene.

Then the Spirit of Jehovah came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

30 Jefta lovet et løfte til Herren og sa: Hvis du virkelig vil gi ammonittene i min hånd,

And Jephthah vowed a vow unto Jehovah, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

31 da skal det være, at hva enn som kommer ut av dørene i mitt hus for å møte meg når jeg vender tilbake i fred fra ammonittene, skal tilhøre Herren, og jeg vil ofre det som brennoffer.

then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Jehovah's, and I will offer it up for a burnt-offering.

32 Så dro Jefta over til ammonittene for å kjempe mot dem, og Herren overgav dem i hans hånd.

So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Jehovah delivered them into his hand.

33 Han slo dem fra Aroer til du kommer til Minnit, tyve byer, og til Abel-Keramin med et svært stort nederlag. Så ammonittene ble ydmyket foran Israels barn.

And he smote them from Aroer until thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

34 Jefta kom til Mispa til sitt hus; og se, hans datter kom ut for å møte ham med tamburiner og med danser. Hun var hans eneste barn; han hadde verken sønn eller datter utenom henne.

And Jephthah came to Mizpah unto his house; and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

35 Da han så henne, rev han sine klær og sa: Å, min datter! Du har brakt meg svært lav, og du er en av dem som plager meg; for jeg har åpnet min munn til Herren, og jeg kan ikke gå tilbake.

And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I cannot go back.

36 Hun sa til ham: Min far, du har åpnet din munn til Herren; gjør med meg i henhold til det som har gått ut av din munn, ettersom Herren har hevnet deg på dine fiender, ammonittenes barn.

And she said unto him, My father, thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah; do unto me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth, forasmuch as Jehovah hath taken vengeance for thee on thine enemies, even on the children of Ammon.

37 Hun sa til sin far: La meg få denne ting; la meg være alene to måneder, så jeg kan dra ned på fjellene og sørge over min jomfrudom, jeg og mine venninner.

And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.

38 Han sa: Gå. Og han sendte henne bort for to måneder; og hun dro, hun og hennes venninner, og sørget over sin jomfruelighet på fjellene.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

39 Da to måneder var gått, kom hun tilbake til sin far, som gjorde med henne i samsvar med hans løfte som han hadde lovet. Hun hadde ikke kjent en mann. Og det ble en sedvane i Israel,

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew not man. And it was a custom in Israel,

40 at Israels døtre gikk årlig for å minnes Jefta, gileadittens datter, fire dager i året.

that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.
