1 Det skjedde etter en tid, ved hveteinnhøstingens tid, at Samson besøkte sin kone med et kje; og han sa: Jeg vil gå inn til min kone i kammeret. Men hennes far tillot ham ikke å gå inn.

But it came to pass after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

2 Og hennes far sa: Jeg trodde virkelig at du hatet henne, derfor ga jeg henne til din kamerat. Er ikke hennes yngre søster vakrere enn henne? Ta henne, ber jeg deg, istedenfor henne.

And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.

3 Da sa Samson til dem: Denne gangen vil jeg være skyldfri når jeg gjør filisterne urett.

And Samson said unto them, This time shall I be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I do them a mischief.

4 Og Samson gikk og fanget tre hundre rever, og tok fakler, og vendte hale mot hale, og satte en fakkel mellom hver to haler.

And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between every two tails.

5 Da han hadde tent på faklene, slapp han dem ut i filisternes stående korn, og brente opp både kornet og de stående kornbåndene, og også olivenlundene.

And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the oliveyards.

6 Filisterne sa: Hvem har gjort dette? Og de sa: Samson, svigersønnen til timnitten, fordi han har tatt hans kone, og gitt henne til hans kamerat. Og filisterne kom opp og brente henne og hennes far med ild.

Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they said, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.

7 Samson sa til dem: Gjør dere dette, vil jeg helt sikkert hevne meg på dere, og deretter vil jeg slutte.

And Samson said unto them, If ye do after this manner, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.

8 Og han slo dem hofte og lår med et stort slag; og han gikk ned og bodde i kløften av Etam-klippen.

And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

9 Så gikk filisterne opp og slo leir i Juda, og spredte seg i Lehi.

Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.

10 Judas menn sa: Hvorfor har dere kommet opp mot oss? Og de sa: For å binde Samson har vi kommet opp, for å gjøre med ham som han har gjort mot oss.

And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they said, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.

11 Da gikk tre tusen menn fra Juda ned til kløften av Etam-klippen, og sa til Samson: Vet du ikke at filisterne hersker over oss? Hva er dette du har gjort mot oss? Og han svarte: Som de gjorde mot meg, har jeg gjort mot dem.

Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what then is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

12 De sa til ham: Vi har kommet ned for å binde deg, så vi kan overlevere deg i filisternes hender. Og Samson sa til dem: Sverg for meg at dere ikke selv vil angripe meg.

And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.

13 De sa til ham: Nei; men vi vil binde deg fast og overlevere deg i deres hender; men vi vil definitivt ikke drepe deg. Så bandt de ham med to nye tau og førte ham opp fra klippen.

And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.

14 Da han kom til Lehi, ropte filisterne da de møtte ham; og Herrens Ånd kom mektig over ham, og tauene rundt hans armer ble som lintråd som ble brent med ild, og hans bånd falt av hans hender.

When he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Jehovah came mightily upon him, and the ropes that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands.

15 Han fant et friskt kjevebein av et esel, og rakte ut hånden sin og tok det, og slo tusen mann med det.

And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and smote a thousand men therewith.

16 Samson sa: Med et kjevebein av et esel, haug på haug, med et kjevebein av et esel har jeg slått tusen mann.

And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, With the jawbone of an ass have I smitten a thousand men.

17 Da han hadde sagt dette, kastet han kjevebeinet fra seg; og stedet ble kalt Ramath-Lehi.

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath-lehi.

18 Og han var veldig tørst, og ropte til Herren, og sa: Du har gitt denne store befrielsen ved din tjeners hånd; og nå skal jeg dø av tørst og falle i de uomskårnes hender.

And he was sore athirst, and called on Jehovah, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised.

19 Men Gud kløv åpningen som er i Lehi, og det kom vann ut derfra; og da han hadde drukket, kom hans ånd tilbake, og han ble frisk igjen. Derfor ble navnet kalt En-Hakkore, som er i Lehi, til denne dag.

But God clave the hollow place that is in Lehi, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore the name thereof was called En-hakkore, which is in Lehi, unto this day.

20 Og han dømte Israel i filisternes dager i tjue år.

And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.
