Det skjedde en gang at folkemengden presset seg mot ham for å høre Guds ord, og han stod ved Gennesaretsjøen.

Now it came to pass, while the multitude pressed upon him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;

Han så to båter ligge ved sjøen, men fiskerne hadde gått ut av dem og holdt på å vaske garnene sine.

and he saw two boats standing by the lake: but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

Han gikk inn i en av båtene, som tilhørte Simon, og ba ham om å legge litt ut fra land. Så satte han seg og underviste folket fra båten.

And he entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the multitudes out of the boat.

Da han var ferdig med å tale, sa han til Simon: "Legg ut på dypet og kast garnene deres til fangst."

And when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

Simon svarte: "Mester, vi har strevd hele natten uten å få noe, men på ditt ord vil jeg kaste ut garnene."

And Simon answered and said, Master, we toiled all night, and took nothing: but at thy word I will let down the nets.

Da de hadde gjort dette, fanget de så mange fisker at garnene begynte å revne.

And when they had done this, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes; and their nets were breaking;

De vinket til partnerne i den andre båten, for at de skulle komme og hjelpe dem. Og de kom og fylte begge båtene, så de nesten sank.

and they beckoned unto their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.

Men da Simon Peter så dette, falt han ned for Jesu knær og sa: "Gå fra meg, Herre, for jeg er en syndig mann!"

But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

For han og alle som var med ham, var slått med undring over fiskefangsten de hadde fått.

For he was amazed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken;

Det samme gjaldt Jakob og Johannes, Sebedeus' sønner, som var partnere med Simon. Jesus sa til Simon: "Frykt ikke, fra nå av skal du fange mennesker."

and so were also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Da de hadde trukket båtene opp på land, forlot de alt og fulgte ham.

And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all, and followed him.

Det skjedde mens han var i en av byene, at en mann full av spedalskhet så Jesus, falt på ansiktet og bønnfalt ham: "Herre, hvis du vil, kan du gjøre meg ren."

And it came to pass, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy: and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

Han rakte ut hånden, rørte ved ham og sa: "Jeg vil, bli ren!" Straks forlot spedalskheten ham.

And he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou made clean. And straightway the leprosy departed from him.

Han forbød ham å fortelle dette til noen, men sa: "Gå og vis deg for presten og bring det offer for renselsen som Moses har påbudt, som et vitnesbyrd for dem."

And he charged him to tell no man: but go thy way, and show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

Ryktet om ham spredte seg enda mer, og store folkemengder samlet seg for å høre og bli helbredet fra sine sykdommer.

But so much the more went abroad the report concerning him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed of their infirmities.

Men han trakk seg tilbake til ensomme steder og bad.

But he withdrew himself in the deserts, and prayed.

En av de dagene underviste han, og fariseere og lovlærere satt der. De var kommet fra alle landsbyene i Galilea, Judea og Jerusalem, og Herrens kraft var med ham til å helbrede.

And it came to pass on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who were come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.

Da kom noen menn med en seng båret av en lam mann, og de prøvde å komme inn og legge ham foran Jesus.

And behold, men bring on a bed a man that was palsied: and they sought to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

Da de ikke fant en måte å komme inn på på grunn av mengden, gikk de opp på taket og firte ham ned gjennom takrevningen med båren, midt foran Jesus.

And not finding by what `way' they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his couch into the midst before Jesus.

Da han så deres tro, sa han: "Mann, syndene dine er tilgitt."

And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

De skriftlærde og fariseerne begynte å gruble: "Hvem er han som taler blasfemi? Hvem kan tilgi synder bortsett fra Gud alene?"

And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

Men Jesus merket tankene deres og sa til dem: "Hvorfor har dere slike tanker i hjertene deres?

But Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said unto them, Why reason ye in your hearts?

Hva er lettest, å si: Dine synder er tilgitt, eller å si: Reis deg og gå?

Which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk?

Men for at dere skal vite at Menneskesønnen har myndighet på jorden til å tilgi synder," sa han til den lamme, "Jeg sier deg: Reis deg, ta opp sengen din og gå hjem."

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins (he said unto him that was palsied), I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thy house.

Straks reiste han seg foran dem, tok opp det han lå på, og gikk hjem mens han lovpriste Gud.

And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his house, glorifying God.

Alle ble grepet av undring og de priste Gud. De ble fylt av frykt og sa: "Vi har sett utrolige ting i dag."

And amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God; and they were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day.

Etter dette, gikk han ut og fikk øye på en toller som het Levi, som satt ved tollboden, og sa til ham: "Følg meg."

And after these things he went forth, and beheld a publican, named Levi, sitting at the place of toll, and said unto him, Follow me.

Han forlot alt, reiste seg og fulgte ham.

And he forsook all, and rose up and followed him.

Levi laget et stort gjestebud for ham i huset sitt. En stor mengde tollere og andre satt til bords med dem.

And Levi made him a great feast in his house: and there was a great multitude of publicans and of others that were sitting at meat with them.

Fariseerne og deres skriftlærde knurret mot disiplene hans og sa: "Hvorfor spiser og drikker dere med tollere og syndere?"

And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with the publicans and sinners?

Jesus svarte dem: "Det er ikke de friske som trenger lege, men de syke.

And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are in health have no need of a physician; but they that are sick.

Jeg er ikke kommet for å kalle rettferdige, men syndere til omvendelse."

I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

Da sa de til ham: "Johannes' disipler faster ofte og ber, og på samme måte også fariseernes disipler, men dine spiser og drikker."

And they said unto him, The disciples of John fast often, and make supplications; likewise also the `disciples' of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink.

Jesus sa til dem: "Kan dere få bryllupsgjestene til å faste mens brudgommen er hos dem?

And Jesus said unto them, Can ye make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

Men det skal komme dager da brudgommen blir tatt fra dem, da skal de faste i de dagene."

But the days will come; and when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then will they fast in those days.

Han fortalte også en lignelse: "Ingen river et stykke fra et nytt plagg og setter det på et gammelt plagg. For da vil det nye revne, og stykket fra det nye vil ikke passe det gamle.

And he spake also a parable unto them: No man rendeth a piece from a new garment and putteth it upon an old garment; else he will rend the new, and also the piece from the new will not agree with the old.

Ingen fyller ny vin i gamle vinsekker. For den nye vinen vil sprekke sekkene, vinene vil renne ut, og sekkene ødelegges.

And no man putteth new wine into old wine-skins; else the new wine will burst the skins, and itself will be spilled, and the skins will perish.

Ny vin må fylles i nye vinssekker.

But new wine must be put into fresh wine-skins.

Ingen som har drukket gammel vin vil straks ha ny, for han sier: Den gamle er god."

And no man having drunk old `wine' desireth new; for he saith, The old is good.
