1 Og han dro derfra og kom til sitt eget hjemsted, og disiplene fulgte ham.

And he went out from thence; and he cometh into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

2 Da sabbaten kom, begynte han å undervise i synagogen. Mange som hørte ham, ble forundret og sa: Hvor har denne mannen dette fra? Og hva er det for en visdom som er gitt ham, og hvilke mektige gjerninger skjer gjennom hans hender?

And when the sabbath was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, Whence hath this man these things? and, What is the wisdom that is given unto this man, and `what mean' such mighty works wrought by his hands?

3 Er ikke dette snekkeren, sønn av Maria, og bror til Jakob, Joses, Judas og Simon? Og er ikke søstrene hans her hos oss? Og de ble støtt av ham.

Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended in him.

4 Men Jesus sa til dem: En profet er ikke foraktet, bortsett fra i sitt eget hjemsted, blant sin egen slekt og i sitt eget hus.

And Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.

5 Og han kunne der ikke gjøre noen mektig gjerning, bortsett fra at han la hendene på noen få syke og helbredet dem.

And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

6 Og han undret seg over deres vantro. Og han dro rundt i landsbyene og underviste.

And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages teaching.

7 Han kalte de tolv til seg og begynte å sende dem ut to og to, og han ga dem makt over urene ånder.

And he calleth unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

8 Han befalte dem å ikke ta noe med på veien, bortsett fra en stav; ikke brød, ingen veske, ikke penger i beltet;

and he charged them that they should take nothing for `their' journey, save a staff only; no bread, no wallet, now money in their purse;

9 men å gå med sandaler og ikke ta to kjortler.

but `to go' shod with sandals: and, `said he', put not on two coats.

10 Han sa til dem: Når dere går inn i et hus, bli der til dere drar videre.

And he said unto them, Wheresoever ye enter into a house, there abide till ye depart thence.

11 Og hvis et sted ikke tar imot dere eller lytter til dere, gå bort derfra og rist støvet av føttene som et vitnesbyrd mot dem.

And whatsoever place shall not receive you, and they hear you not, as ye go forth thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony unto them.

12 Og de dro ut og forkynte at folk skulle omvende seg.

And they went out, and preached that `men' should repent.

13 De drev ut mange onde ånder, og salvet mange syke med olje og helbredet dem.

And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

14 Kong Herodes hørte om det, for Jesu navn var blitt kjent. Han sa: Johannes døperen har stått opp fra de døde, og derfor virker disse kreftene gjennom ham.

And king Herod heard `thereof'; for his name had become known: and he said, John the Baptizer is risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him.

15 Andre sa: Det er Elia. Og andre igjen sa: Det er en profet, som en av profetene.

But others said, It is Elijah. And others said, `It is' a prophet, `even' as one of the prophets.

16 Men da Herodes hørte dette, sa han: Johannes, som jeg halshugget, er stått opp.

But Herod, when he heard `thereof', said, John, whom I beheaded, he is risen.

17 For Herodes hadde sendt ut folk for å gripe Johannes og satte ham i fengsel på grunn av Herodias, sin bror Filips kone, som han hadde giftet seg med.

For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.

18 For Johannes hadde sagt til Herodes: Det er ikke lov for deg å ha din brors kone.

For John said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

19 Og Herodias hatet ham og ønsket å drepe ham, men kunne ikke;

And Herodias set herself against him, and desired to kill him; and she could not;

20 for Herodes fryktet Johannes og visste at han var en rettferdig og hellig mann, og holdt ham trygg. Når han hørte på ham, ble han veldig forvirret, men lyttet med glede.

for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

21 En dag, da det var en beleilig anledning, hadde Herodes en fest på sin fødselsdag for sine høvdinger, hærførere og de fremste mennene i Galilea.

And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, and the high captains, and the chief men of Galilee;

22 Og da Herodias' datter selv kom inn og danset, gledet hun Herodes og dem som lå til bords med ham. Og kongen sa til piken: Be meg om hva du vil, så skal jeg gi deg det.

and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and them that sat at meat with him; and the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

23 Han sverget til henne: Hva du enn ber meg om, skal jeg gi deg, inntil halvparten av riket mitt.

And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

24 Hun gikk ut og spurte sin mor: Hva skal jeg be om? Hun svarte: Hodet til Johannes døperen.

And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.

25 Da skyndte hun seg inn til kongen og sa: Jeg vil at du straks gir meg hodet til Johannes døperen på et fat.

And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

26 Kongen ble meget bedrøvet, men på grunn av sine edsavleggelser og dem som lå til bords, ville han ikke avvise henne.

And the king was exceeding sorry; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat, he would not reject her.

27 Straks sendte kongen en soldat med befalingen om å hente hodet hans. Soldaten gikk av sted og halshugget Johannes i fengselet,

And straightway the king sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring his head: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

28 og brakte hodet på et fat og ga det til piken, og piken ga det til sin mor.

and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother.

29 Da disiplene hans hørte det, kom de og tok kroppen hans og la den i en grav.

And when his disciples heard `thereof', they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

30 Apostlene samlet seg igjen hos Jesus og fortalte ham alt de hadde gjort og lært.

And the apostles gather themselves together unto Jesus; and they told him all things, whatsoever they had done, and whatsoever they had taught.

31 Han sa til dem: Kom med meg til et øde sted, slik at vi kan hvile litt. For det var mange som kom og gikk, så de ikke engang fikk tid til å spise.

And he saith unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while. For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

32 Så de dro bort i båten til et øde sted for seg selv.

And they went away in the boat to a desert place apart.

33 Men folket så dem dra, og mange kjente dem igjen, og de løp samlet dit til fots fra alle byene og kom frem før dem.

And `the people' saw them going, and many knew `them', and they ran together there on foot from all the cities, and outwent them.

34 Da han steg ut av båten, så han en stor folkemengde og fikk medfølelse med dem, for de var som sauer uten hyrde; og han begynte å undervise dem mye.

And he came forth and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

35 Da det begynte å bli sent på dagen, kom disiplene til ham og sa: Stedet er øde, og det er allerede sent.

And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, The place is desert, and the day is now far spent;

36 Send dem bort, så de kan gå til området rundt og landsbyene her omkring og kjøpe seg noe å spise.

send them away, that they may go into the country and villages round about, and buy themselves somewhat to eat.

37 Men han svarte og sa til dem: Gi dere dem noe å spise. De sa til ham: Skal vi gå og kjøpe brød for to hundre denarer og gi dem å spise?

But he answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred shillings' worth of bread, and give them to eat?

38 Han spurte dem: Hvor mange brød har dere? Gå og se etter. Da de hadde funnet ut, sa de: Fem, og to fisk.

And he saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? go `and' see. And when they knew, they say, Five, and two fishes.

39 Så befalte han dem å få alle til å sette seg ned i grupper på den grønne gressvollen.

And he commanded them that all should sit down by companies upon the green grass.

40 De satte seg ned i rekke, noen i grupper på hundre og noen på femti.

And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41 Så tok han de fem brødene og de to fiskene, så opp mot himmelen, velsignet dem, og brøt brødene. Han ga dem til disiplene for å dele ut til folket, og han delte også de to fiskene mellom dem alle.

And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake the loaves; and he gave to the disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

42 Og de spiste alle sammen og ble mette.

And they all ate, and were filled.

43 De samlet opp tolv kurver med brødstykker, og også restene av fiskene.

And they took up broken pieces, twelve basketfuls, and also of the fishes.

44 Det var fem tusen menn som hadde spist brødene.

And they that ate the loaves were five thousand men.

45 Straks fikk han disiplene til å gå i båten og dra over til den andre siden, mot Betsaida, mens han sendte folkemengden av sted.

And straightway he constrained his disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before `him' unto the other side to Bethsaida, while he himself sendeth the multitude away.

46 Så tok han farvel med dem, og gikk opp i fjellet for å be.

And after he had taken leave of them, he departed into the mountain to pray.

47 Da kvelden kom, var båten midt på sjøen, og han var alene på land.

And when even was come, the boat was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

48 Han så at de slet tungt med å ro, for vinden var imot dem. Og ved den fjerde nattevakten kom han til dem, gående på sjøen, og han ville gå forbi dem.

And seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking on the sea; and he would have passed by them:

49 Men da de så ham gå på sjøen, trodde de det var et gjenferd og skrek opp.

but they, when they saw him walking on the sea, supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;

50 For de så ham alle og ble skremt. Men straks talte han til dem og sa: Vær ved godt mot! Det er meg, frykt ikke.

for they all saw him, and were troubled. But he straightway spake with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

51 Han gikk om bord i båten til dem, og vinden stilnet. Og de var meget forundret.

And he went up unto them into the boat; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves;

52 For de forsto ikke det med brødene, men deres hjerter var forherdet.

for they understood not concerning the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

53 Da de krysset over, kom de til Gennesaret og la til ved land.

And when they had crossed over, they came to the land unto Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.

54 Og straks de var kommet i land, kjente folk ham igjen.

And when they were come out of the boat, straightway `the people' knew him,

55 De løp omkring i hele området og begynte å bære de syke på bårer til stedet hvor de hørte at han var.

and ran round about that whole region, and began to carry about on their beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.

56 Og hvor han enn gikk inn, i landsbyer, byer eller på landsbygda, la de de syke i gatene og ba om å få røre ved kanten av hans kappe. Og alle som rørte ved ham, ble helbredet.

And wheresoever he entered, into villages, or into cities, or into the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
