Og Jesus svarte og talte igjen til dem i lignelser og sa,

And Jesus answered and spake again in parables unto them, saying,

Himmelriket kan lignes med en konge som gjorde i stand et bryllupsfest for sin sønn.

The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,

Han sendte sine tjenere for å kalle de innbudte til bryllupsfesten, men de ville ikke komme.

and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the marriage feast: and they would not come.

Igjen sendte han andre tjenere og sa: Si til de innbudte: Se, jeg har gjort i stand middagen; oksene og de fete dyrene er slaktet, og alt er klart: kom til bryllupsfesten.

Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them that are bidden, Behold, I have made ready my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come to the marriage feast.

Men de brydde seg ikke om det og gikk sine egne veier, én til sin gård, en annen til sin handel;

But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;

og resten tok fatt i tjenerne, mishandlet dem og drepte dem.

and the rest laid hold on his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.

Men kongen ble vred; han sendte hærene sine og utslettet de morderne og brente byen deres.

But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

Så sa han til tjenerne sine: Bryllupsfesten er klar, men de som var innbudt var ikke verdige.

Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they that were bidden were not worthy.

Gå derfor ut til veikryssene, og innby alle dere finner til bryllupsfesten.

Go ye therefore unto the partings of the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage feast.

Og tjenerne gikk ut på veiene og samlet alle de fant, både onde og gode: og bryllupsfesten ble fylt med gjester.

And those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was filled with guests.

Men når kongen kom inn for å se til gjestene, så han der en mann uten bryllupsklær,

But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment:

og han sa til ham: Venn, hvordan kom du inn her uten bryllupsklær? Og mannen ble målløs.

and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless.

Da sa kongen til tjenerne: Bind ham på hender og føtter, og kast ham ut i mørket utenfor; der skal det være gråt og tenners gnissel.

Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

For mange er kalt, men få er utvalgt.

For many are called, but few chosen.

Da gikk fariseerne og planla hvordan de kunne fange ham i ord.

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might ensnare him in `his' talk.

Og de sendte sine disipler til ham sammen med herodianerne, og sa: Lærer, vi vet at du er sannferdig og lærer Guds vei i sannhet, og at du ikke bryr deg om noen, for du ser ikke på person.

And they send to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one: for thou regardest not the person of men.

Så si oss hva du mener: Er det lovlig å gi skatt til keiseren eller ikke?

Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

Men Jesus merket deres ondskap og sa: Hvorfor setter dere meg på prøve, dere hyklere?

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?

Vis meg mynten som skatten betales med. Og de brakte til ham en denar.

Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a denarius.

Og han sa til dem: Hvis bilde og påskrift er dette?

And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

De sa til ham: Keiserens. Da sa han til dem: Gi da keiseren det som keiserens er, og Gud det som Guds er.

They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

Og da de hørte det, undret de seg, forlot ham og gikk bort.

And when they heard it, they marvelled, and left him, and went away.

Samme dag kom saddukeerne til ham, de som sier at det ikke er noen oppstandelse, og de spurte ham,

On that day there came to him Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection: and they asked him,

og sa: Lærer, Moses sa: Hvis en mann dør barnløs, skal broren hans gifte seg med enken og skaffe barn for broren.

saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

Nå var det hos oss syv brødre: den første giftet seg og døde, og etterlot ingen barn, og hans kone ble gift med broren.

Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first married and deceased, and having no seed left his wife unto his brother;

Slik gikk det også med den andre og den tredje, helt til den syvende.

in like manner the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

Og til slutt døde også kvinnen.

And after them all, the woman died.

Så i oppstandelsen, hvilken av de syv skal hun være hustru til, for de har alle hatt henne?

In the resurrection therefore whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

Men Jesus svarte dem: Dere tar feil fordi dere ikke kjenner skriftene eller Guds kraft.

But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

For i oppstandelsen gifter de seg verken eller blir giftet bort, men er som engler i himmelen.

For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven.

Men angående de dødes oppstandelse: har dere ikke lest hva Gud har sagt til dere,

But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

Jeg er Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud? Gud er ikke Gud for de døde, men for de levende.

I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not `the God' of the dead, but of the living.

Og da folkemengden hørte det, ble de forundret over hans lære.

And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

Men da fariseerne hørte at han hadde brakt saddukeerne til å tie, samlet de seg.

But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together.

Og en av dem, en lovkyndig, spurte ham for å prøve ham:

And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him:

Lærer, hvilket bud er det største i loven?

Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

Han sa til ham: Du skal elske Herren din Gud av hele ditt hjerte, av hele din sjel, og av hele ditt sinn.

And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Dette er det største og første budet.

This is the great and first commandment.

Og det andre, som er likt det, er dette: Du skal elske din neste som deg selv.

And a second like `unto it' is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

På disse to budene hviler hele loven og profetene.

On these two commandments the whole law hangeth, and the prophets.

Mens fariseerne var samlet, spurte Jesus dem,

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

Hva mener dere om Messias? Hvis sønn er han? De sier til ham: Davids sønn.

saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, `The son' of David.

Han sier til dem: Hvordan kan da David i Ånden kalle ham Herre og si,

He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

Herren sa til min Herre: Sitt ved min høyre hånd, til jeg legger dine fiender under dine føtter?

The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies underneath thy feet?

Hvis da David kaller ham Herre, hvordan kan han være hans sønn?

If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son?

Og ingen var i stand til å svare ham noe, heller ikke våget noen fra den dagen av å stille ham flere spørsmål.

And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
