1 Folket klaget og talte ondt for Jehovas ører. Da Jehova hørte det, ble han vred, og hans ild brant blant dem og fortærte den ytterste del av leiren.

And the people were as murmurers, `speaking' evil in the ears of Jehovah: and when Jehovah heard it, his anger was kindled; and the fire of Jehovah burnt among them, and devoured in the uttermost part of the camp.

2 Folket ropte til Moses, og Moses ba til Jehova, og ilden sluknet.

And the people cried unto Moses; and Moses prayed unto Jehovah, and the fire abated.

3 Stedet fikk navnet Tabera fordi Jehovas ild brant blant dem.

And the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of Jehovah burnt among them.

4 Den blandede folkemassen blant dem begynte å begjære sterkt, og Israels barn gråt igjen og sa: Hvem skal gi oss kjøtt å spise?

And the mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

5 Vi husker fisken vi spiste gratis i Egypt, agurkene, melonene, purren, løkene og hvitløken.

We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt for nought; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic:

6 Men nå, vår sjel er uttørket; det finnes ingenting bortsett fra denne mannaen å se på.

but now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all save this manna to look upon.

7 Mannaen var som korianderfrø, og dens utseende som bedellium.

And the manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium.

8 Folket gikk omkring og samlet den, malte den i kverner eller slo den i mortere, kokte den i gryter og laget kaker av den. Den smakte som fersk olje.

The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

9 Når dugg falt over leiren om natten, falt mannaen med den.

And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

10 Moses hørte folk gråte gjennom deres familier, hver mann ved døren til sitt telt, og Jehovas vrede ble stor. Moses var også misfornøyd.

And Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent: and the anger of Jehovah was kindled greatly; and Moses was displeased.

11 Moses sa til Jehova: Hvorfor har du handlet ille mot din tjener? Hvorfor har jeg ikke funnet nåde for dine øyne, siden du legger byrden av hele dette folket på meg?

And Moses said unto Jehovah, Wherefore hast thou dealt ill with thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

12 Har jeg unnfanget hele dette folket? Har jeg født dem, slik at du sier til meg: Bær dem i din favn som en sykepleier bærer et barn, til landet du sverget å gi deres fedre?

Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing-father carrieth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

13 Hvor skal jeg få kjøtt til hele dette folket? For de gråter til meg og sier: Gi oss kjøtt å spise.

Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

14 Jeg er ikke i stand til å bære hele dette folket alene, for det er for tungt for meg.

I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

15 Hvis du behandler meg slik, så ta livet mitt, jeg ber deg, hvis jeg har funnet nåde for dine øyne, og la meg ikke se min elendighet.

And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

16 Og Jehova sa til Moses: Samle for meg sytti menn av Israels eldste, som du vet er folkets eldre og deres ledere, og før dem til møteteltet, så de kan stå der med deg.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with thee.

17 Jeg vil komme ned og tale med deg der. Jeg vil ta av Ånden som er over deg og legge den på dem, så de kan bære folkets byrde med deg, så du ikke bærer den alene.

And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the Spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

18 Og si til folket: Hellige dere til i morgen, for da skal dere spise kjøtt. For dere har grått i Jehovas ører og sagt: Hvem skal gi oss kjøtt å spise? For det var godt for oss i Egypt. Derfor vil Jehova gi dere kjøtt, og dere skal spise.

And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the ears of Jehovah, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore Jehovah will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.

19 Dere skal ikke spise en dag, heller ikke to dager, ei heller fem dager, eller ti dager, eller tyve dager,

Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days,

20 men hele en måned, til det kommer ut av nesen deres og blir avskyelig for dere, fordi dere har forkastet Jehova som er blant dere, og har grått for ham og sagt: Hvorfor kom vi ut av Egypt?

but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you; because that ye have rejected Jehovah who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

21 Moses sa: Folket jeg er blant er seks hundre tusen mann, og du har sagt: Jeg vil gi dem kjøtt, så de kan spise en hel måned.

And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.

22 Skal flokker og hjorder slaktes for dem, for å tilfredsstille dem? Eller skal all havets fisk samles for dem, for å tilfredsstille dem?

Shall flocks and herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?

23 Og Jehova sa til Moses: Er Jehovas hånd blitt kort? Du skal nå se om mitt ord skal oppfylles for deg eller ikke.

And Jehovah said unto Moses, Is Jehovah's hand waxed short? now shalt thou see whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

24 Moses gikk ut og fortalte folket Jehovas ord. Han samlet sytti menn av folkets eldste og stilte dem rundt teltet.

And Moses went out, and told the people the words of Jehovah: and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the Tent.

25 Og Jehova kom ned i skyen og talte til ham. Han tok noe av Ånden som var over ham og la den på de sytti eldste. Da Ånden hvilte over dem, profeterte de, men det fortsatte de ikke med.

And Jehovah came down in the cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.

26 To menn ble igjen i leiren, den enes navn var Eldad, og den andres navn var Medad. Ånden hvilte over dem; de var blant de som var skrevet ned, men hadde ikke gått ut til teltet. De profeterte i leiren.

But there remained two men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the Spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but had not gone out unto the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.

27 En ung mann løp og fortalte Moses og sa: Eldad og Medad profeterer i leiren.

And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.

28 Josva, Nuns sønn, Moses' tjener og en av hans utvalgte menn, svarte og sa: Min herre Moses, forby dem!

And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.

29 Men Moses sa til ham: Er du sjalu for min skyld? Jeg skulle ønske at hele Jehovas folk var profeter, og at Jehova ville legge sin Ånd på dem!

And Moses said unto him, Art thou jealous for my sake? would that all Jehovah's people were prophets, that Jehovah would put his Spirit upon them!

30 Moses gikk tilbake til leiren, han og Israels eldste.

And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

31 Det kom en vind fra Jehova, som brakte vaktler fra havet og lot dem falle ved leiren, omtrent en dags reise på den ene siden og en dags reise på den andre siden, omkring leiren, og omtrent to alen over bakken.

And there went forth a wind from Jehovah, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth.

32 Folket sto opp hele den dagen, hele natten og hele den neste dagen og samlet vaktlene. Den som samlet minst, samlet ti homer. De bredte dem ut rundt leiren.

And the people rose up all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

33 Mens kjøttet ennå var mellom tennene deres, før det ble tygget, flammet Jehovas vrede opp mot folket, og Jehova slo folket med en svært stor plage.

While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of Jehovah was kindled against the people, and Jehovah smote the people with a very great plague.

34 Stedet ble kalt Kibrot-Hattaava, fordi de der begravde folkene som hadde begjært.

And the name of that place was called Kibrothhattaavah, because there they buried the people that lusted.

35 Fra Kibrot-Hattaava reiste folket til Haserot, og de ble værende ved Haserot.

From Kibrothhattaavah the people journeyed unto Hazeroth; and they abode at Hazeroth.
