1 Og Herren talte til Moses og sa:

And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Send menn for å speide ut landet Kanaan, som jeg gir til Israels barn: fra hver stamme av deres fedre skal dere sende en mann, hver en leder blant dem.

Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a prince among them.

3 Og Moses sendte dem fra ørkenen Paran etter Herrens befaling: alle sammen var ledere blant Israels barn.

And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Jehovah: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

4 Og dette var deres navn: Av Rubens stamme, Shammua, sønn av Zakkur.

And these were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5 Av Simons stamme, Shafat, sønn av Hori.

Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6 Av Judas stamme, Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne.

Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7 Av Issakars stamme, Jigal, sønn av Josef.

Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8 Av Efraims stamme, Hosea, sønn av Nun.

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

9 Av Benjamins stamme, Palti, sønn av Rafu.

Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10 Av Sebulons stamme, Gaddiel, sønn av Sodi.

Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11 Av Josefs stamme, nærmere bestemt av Manasses stamme, Gaddi, sønn av Susi.

Of the tribe of Joseph, `namely', of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12 Av Dans stamme, Ammiel, sønn av Gemalli.

Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13 Av Asjers stamme, Setur, sønn av Mikael.

Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14 Av Naftalis stamme, Nahbi, sønn av Vofsi.

Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15 Av Gads stamme, Geuel, sønn av Maki.

Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 Dette er navnene på de menn Moses sendte for å speide landet. Og Moses ga Hosea, sønn av Nun, navnet Josva.

These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

17 Moses sendte dem for å speide landet Kanaan, og han sa til dem: Dra opp denne veien, mot sør, og gå inn i høylandet.

And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country:

18 Se på landet, hvordan det er, og folket som bor der, om de er sterke eller svake, få eller mange.

and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

19 Og hvordan landet er de bor i, om det er godt eller dårlig, og hvilke byer de bor i, enten i leirer eller festninger.

and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

20 Se også hvordan landet er, om det er fruktbart eller karrig, om det er skog der eller ikke. Vær modige, og ta med av frukten fra landet. Det var nå tiden for de første modne druene.

and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

21 Så dro de opp og speidet landet fra ørkenen Zin til Rehob, til inngangen til Hamat.

So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

22 De dro opp mot sør og kom til Hebron; der var Ahiman, Sesjai og Talmai, Anak-sønnene. (Hebron var bygd sju år før Soan i Egypt.)

And they went up by the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 De kom til Eshkoldalen, og der skar de av en gren med en drueklase som de bar på en stang mellom to; de tok også med granatepler og fikener.

And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it upon a staff between two; `they brought' also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24 Det stedet ble kalt Eshkoldalen på grunn av drueklasen Israels barn skar av der.

That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.

25 De vendte tilbake etter førti dager med å ha speidet landet.

And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

26 De dro tilbake til Moses, og til Aron, og til hele menigheten av Israels barn, til ørkenen Paran, til Kadesj; og de ga dem rapport og viste dem landets frukt.

And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

27 De fortalte ham og sa: Vi kom til landet du sendte oss til; det flyter virkelig med melk og honning, og dette er frukten derfra.

And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us; and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28 Men folket som bor der er sterke, og byene er befestet og veldig store; dessuten så vi Anak-sønnene der.

Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, `and' very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 Amalek bor i sørlandet; hetittene, jebusittene og amorittene bor i høylandet; og kanaanittene bor ved havet og langs Jordans bredd.

Amalek dwelleth in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwelleth by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.

30 Kaleb roet folket foran Moses og sa: La oss dra opp med en gang og ta landet i eie, for vi er i stand til å overvinne det.

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

31 Men mennene som hadde dratt opp sammen med ham sa: Vi kan ikke dra opp mot folket, for de er sterkere enn oss.

But the men that went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

32 De ga en dårlig rapport om landet de hadde speidet til Israels barn, og sa: Landet som vi har dratt gjennom for å speide det, er et land som fortærer sine innbyggere; og alle menneskene vi så der, var av stor vekst.

And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature.

33 Der så vi også nefilimene, Anak-sønnene, som er av nefilimene, og for oss selv var vi som gresshopper, og slik vi så ut for dem.

And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
