1 Da kom alle hærførerne, og Johanan, sønn av Kareah, og Jesanja, sønn av Hoshaja, og hele folket, fra den minste til den største, nærmere,

Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah, the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near,

2 og sa til profeten Jeremia: La vårt ønske komme frem for deg, og be for oss til Herren din Gud, selv for denne lille gruppen vi er; for vi er bare en liten rest av en stor mengde, som dine øyne kan se.

And said to Jeremiah the prophet, Let our request come before you, and make prayer for us to the Lord your God, even for this small band of us; for we are only a small band out of what was a great number, as your eyes may see:

3 At Herren din Gud må vise oss veien vi skal gå og hva vi skal gjøre.

That the Lord your God may make clear to us the way in which we are to go and what we are to do.

4 Da sa profeten Jeremia til dem: Jeg har hørt dere; se, jeg skal be til Herren deres Gud, slik dere har sagt; og det skal være slik at hva enn Herren sier som svar til dere, vil jeg kunngjøre for dere uten å holde noe tilbake.

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, I have given ear to you; see, I will make prayer to the Lord your God, as you have said; and it will be that, whatever the Lord may say in answer to you, I will give you word of it, keeping nothing back.

5 Da sa de til Jeremia: Måtte Herren være et sant vitne mot oss i god tro, hvis vi ikke gjør alt det som Herren din Gud sender deg for å si til oss.

Then they said to Jeremiah, May the Lord be a true witness against us in good faith, if we do not do everything which the Lord your God sends you to say to us.

6 Enten det er godt eller ondt, vil vi adlyde Herrens, vår Guds, røst, som vi sender deg til; slik at det kan gå oss vel når vi hører på Herrens, vår Guds, røst.

If it is good or if it is evil, we will be guided by the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you; so that it may be well for us when we give ear to the voice of the Lord our God.

7 Og etter ti dager kom Herrens ord til Jeremia.

And it came about that after ten days the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah.

8 Og han sendte bud etter Johanan, sønn av Kareah, og alle hærførerne som var med ham, og hele folket, fra den minste til den største.

And he sent for Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were still with him, and all the people, from the least to the greatest,

9 Og sa til dem: Dette er ordene fra Herren, Israels Gud, til hvem dere sendte meg for å legge frem deres ønske:

And said to them, These are the words of the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to put your request before him:

10 Hvis dere fortsatt blir boende i landet, vil jeg fortsette å bygge dere opp og ikke rive ned, plante dere og ikke rykke opp; for min hensikt om å skade dere har endret seg.

If you still go on living in the land, then I will go on building you up and not pulling you down, planting you and not uprooting you: for my purpose of doing evil to you has been changed.

11 Frykt ikke kongen av Babylon, som dere nå frykter; frykt ham ikke, sier Herren: for jeg er med dere for å holde dere trygge og gi dere frelse fra hans hånd.

Have no fear of the king of Babylon, of whom you are now in fear; have no fear of him, says the Lord: for I am with you to keep you safe and to give you salvation from his hands.

12 Og jeg vil vise dere barmhjertighet, slik at han vil ha barmhjertighet med dere og la dere vende tilbake til deres land.

And I will have mercy on you, so that he may have mercy on you and let you go back to your land.

13 Men hvis dere sier: Vi har ingen lyst til å bli boende i dette landet; og ikke hører på Herrens, deres Guds, røst,

But if you say, We have no desire to go on living in this land; and do not give ear to the voice of the Lord your God,

14 og sier: Nei, men vi vil dra til Egypt, hvor vi ikke vil se krig, eller høre lyden av hornet, eller mangle mat; der vil vi ha vårt oppholdssted;

Saying, No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we will not see war, or be hearing the sound of the horn, or be in need of food; there we will make our living-place;

15 Så hør nå Herrens ord, dere siste av Juda: Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, har sagt: Hvis deres sinn er innstilt på å dra til Egypt og bli der,

Then give ear now to the word of the Lord, O you last of Judah: the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, has said, If your minds are fixed on going into Egypt and stopping there;

16 vil det slik at sverdet, som er årsaken til deres frykt, innhente dere der i Egypt, og mangel på mat, som dere frykter, vil forfølge dere der i Egypt; og der vil dere møte døden.

Then it will come about that the sword, which is the cause of your fear, will overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and need of food, which you are fearing, will go after you there in Egypt; and there death will come to you.

17 Slik vil det gå for alle menn hvis sinn er innstilt på å dra til Egypt og bo der; de vil møtes av sverdet, mangel på mat, og sykdom: ikke en av dem vil bevare livet eller unnslippe det onde jeg vil sende over dem.

Such will be the fate of all the men whose minds are fixed on going into Egypt and stopping there; they will come to their end by the sword, by being short of food, and by disease: not one of them will keep his life or get away from the evil which I will send on them.

18 For dette er hva Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, har sagt: Slik min vrede og harme ble sluppet løs over folket i Jerusalem, slik vil min harme bli sluppet løs over dere når dere går inn i Egypt: og dere vil bli til en ed, et tegn på forundring, en forbannelse og et skammens navn; og dere vil aldri se dette stedet igjen.

For this is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel, has said: As my wrath and passion have been let loose on the people of Jerusalem, so will my passion be let loose on you when you go into Egypt: and you will become an oath and a cause of wonder and a curse and a name of shame; and you will never see this place again.

19 Herren har sagt om dere, dere siste av Juda: Gå ikke inn i Egypt: vær sikre på at jeg har gitt dere vitnesbyrd denne dagen.

The Lord has said about you, O last of Judah, Go not into Egypt: be certain that I have given witness to you this day.

20 For dere har handlet falskt i deres hjerter; for dere sendte meg til Herren deres Gud og sa: Be for oss til Herren vår Gud, og gi oss ord om alt han måtte si, og vi vil gjøre det.

For you have been acting with deceit in your hearts; for you sent me to the Lord your God, saying, Make prayer for us to the Lord our God, and give us word of everything he may say, and we will do it.

21 Og denne dagen har jeg gjort det klart for dere, og dere har ikke hørt på Herrens, deres Guds, røst i noe av det han har sendt meg til dere.

And this day I have made it clear to you, and you have not given ear to the voice of the Lord your God in anything for which he has sent me to you.

22 Og nå vær sikre på at dere vil møte deres ende ved sverd og ved mangel på mat og ved sykdom, på det stedet hvor dere ønsker å dra for å bo.

And now be certain that you will come to your end by the sword and by being short of food and by disease, in the place to which you are pleased to go for a living-place.
