1 Og Herren sa til Moses,

And the Lord said to Moses,

2 Send menn for å utforske landet Kanaan, som jeg gir til Israels barn; fra hver av deres fedres stammer skal du sende en mann, hver en leder blant dem.

Send men to get knowledge about the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from every tribe of their fathers you are to send a man, every one a chief among them.

3 Og Moses sendte dem fra ørkenen Paran som Herren hadde befalt, alle sammen menn som var ledere for Israels barn.

And Moses sent them from the waste land of Paran as the Lord gave orders, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

4 Og dette var deres navn: Fra Rubens stamme, Shammua, sønn av Sakkur.

And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua, the son of Zaccur.

5 Fra Simeons stamme, Shafat, sønn av Hori.

Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat, the son of Hori.

6 Fra Judas stamme, Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne.

Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb, the son of Jephunneh.

7 Fra Issakars stamme, Igal, sønn av Josef.

Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal, the son of Joseph.

8 Fra Efraims stamme, Hosjea, sønn av Nun.

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea, the son of Nun.

9 Fra Benjamins stamme, Palti, sønn av Rafun.

Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti, the son of Raphu.

10 Fra Sebulons stamme, Gaddiel, sønn av Sodi.

Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel, the son of Sodi.

11 Fra Josefs stamme, det vil si fra Manasses familie, Gaddi, sønn av Susi.

Of the tribe of Joseph, that is of the family of Manasseh, Gaddi, the son of Susi.

12 Fra Dans stamme, Ammiel, sønn av Gemalli.

Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel, the son of Gemalli.

13 Fra Asjers stamme, Setur, sønn av Mikael.

Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur, the son of Michael

14 Fra Naftalis stamme, Nahbi, sønn av Vofsi.

Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi, the son of Vophsi.

15 Fra Gads stamme, Geuel, sønn av Maki.

Of the tribe of Gad, Gevel, the son of Machi.

16 Dette er navnene på de menn Moses sendte for å utforske landet. Og Moses gav Hosjea, sønn av Nun, navnet Josva.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to get knowledge about the land. And Moses gave to Hoshea, the son of Nun, the name of Joshua.

17 Så sendte Moses dem for å se på Kanaans land, og sa til dem: Dra opp til Sydlandet og inn i fjellene;

So Moses sent them to have a look at the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up into the South and into the hill-country;

18 Og se hvordan landet er, og om folket som bor der er sterke eller svake, få eller mange;

And see what the land is like; and if the people living in it are strong or feeble, small or great in number;

19 Og hvordan landet de bor i er, om det er godt eller dårlig; og om deres bosteder er telt eller befestede byer;

And what sort of land they are living in, if it is good or bad; and what their living-places are, tent-circles or walled towns;

20 Og om landet er fruktbart eller magert, og om det er skog der eller ikke. Vær ved godt mot, og kom tilbake med noen av fruktene fra landet. Det var nettopp tiden da de første druer var modne.

And if the land is fertile or poor, and if there is wood in it or not. And be of good heart, and come back with some of the produce of the land. Now it was the time when the first grapes were ready.

21 Så dro de opp og så på landet, fra ørkenen Sin til Rehob, på veien til Hamat.

So they went up and got a view of the land, from the waste land of Zin to Rehob, on the way to Hamath.

22 De dro opp til Sydlandet og kom til Hebron; der bodde Ahiman, Seshai og Talmai, Anaks barn. (Hebron ble bygd sju år før Soan i Egypt.)

They went up into the South and came to Hebron; and Ahiman and Sheshai and Talmai, the children of Anak, were living there. (Now the building of Hebron took place seven years before that of Zoan in Egypt.)

23 De kom til Eskoldalen, og hogde av en gren med drueklase, og to av dem bar den på en stang mellom seg; og de tok med noen granatepler og fikener.

And they came to the valley of Eshcol, and cutting down a vine-branch with its grapes, two of them took it on a rod between them; and they took some pomegranates and figs.

24 Dette stedet ble kalt Eskoldalen på grunn av drueklasen som Israels barn tok derfra.

That place was named the valley of Eshcol because of the grapes which the children of Israel took from there.

25 Etter førti dager kom de tilbake etter å ha utforsket landet.

At the end of forty days they came back from viewing the land.

26 Og de kom tilbake til Moses og Aron og til hele Israels menighet, i Kadesj i ørkenen Paran; og de ga dem og hele folket en rapport og viste dem fruktene fra landet.

And they came back to Moses and Aaron and all the children of Israel, to Kadesh in the waste land of Paran; and gave an account to them and to all the people and let them see the produce of the land.

27 De sa: Vi kom til det landet du sendte oss til, og det flyter virkelig av melk og honning; og her er noen av fruktene fra det.

And they said, We came to the land where you sent us, and truly it is flowing with milk and honey: and here is some of the produce of it.

28 Men folket som bor der er sterke, og byene er befestede og meget store; dessuten så vi Anaks barn der.

But the people living in the land are strong, and the towns are walled and very great; further, we saw the children of Anak there.

29 Og amalekittene bor i Sydlandet; hetittene, jebusittene og amorittene bor i fjellene; og kanaaneerne bor ved sjøen og ved Jordan.

And the Amalekites are in the South; and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites are living in the hill-country; and the Canaanites by the sea and by the side of Jordan.

30 Da stillet Kaleb folket foran Moses, og sa: La oss straks dra opp og ta dette landet; for vi er i stand til å overvinne det.

Then Caleb made signs to the people to keep quiet, and said to Moses, Let us go up straight away and take this land; for we are well able to overcome it.

31 Men de mennene som dro opp sammen med ham sa: Vi kan ikke dra opp mot dette folket, for de er sterkere enn oss.

But the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.

32 Og de ga Israels barn en dårlig rapport om landet de hadde utforsket, og sa: Dette landet som vi gikk gjennom, er et land som fortærer sine innbyggere; og alle folket vi så der er av stor størrelse.

And they gave the children of Israel a bad account of the land they had been to see, saying, This land through which we went is a land causing destruction to those living in it; and all the people we saw there are men of more than common size.

33 Der så vi kjemper, Anaks barn, av Nephilims slekt: og for oss selv så vi ut som gresshopper, og slik så vi også ut for dem.

There we saw those great men, the sons of Anak, offspring of the Nephilim: and we seemed to ourselves no more than insects, and so we seemed to them.
