Verse 1

In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, so that even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without a word by the conduct of their wives.

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

Verse 2

When they observe your pure and reverent behavior.

While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

Verse 3

Let your beauty not be external—such as elaborate hairstyles, the wearing of gold jewelry, or fine clothes.

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

Verse 4

Instead, it should be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight.

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Verse 5

For in this way, in the past, the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, submitting to their own husbands.

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

Verse 6

Just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You are her children if you do what is good and do not fear anything that frightens you.

Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Verse 7

Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with a weaker vessel, showing them honor as co-heirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Verse 8

Finally, all of you be like-minded and sympathetic, love one another as brothers and sisters, be tenderhearted and humble.

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Verse 9

Do not repay evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the contrary, give a blessing, because to this you were called, so that you may inherit a blessing.

Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

Verse 10

For the one who wants to love life and to see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

Verse 11

He must turn away from evil and do what is good; he must seek peace and pursue it.

Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

Verse 12

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are attentive to their prayers. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Verse 13

Who then will harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

Verse 14

But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear or be intimidated.

But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

Verse 15

But honor the Lord as holy in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Verse 16

Yet do so with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that when you are maligned, those who accuse your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame.

Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Verse 17

For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

Verse 18

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the Spirit.

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

Verse 19

In that Spirit, He also went and preached to the spirits in prison.

By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

Verse 20

They were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it, only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water.

Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

Verse 21

This water symbolizes baptism, which now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Verse 22

He is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, with angels, authorities, and powers subjected to Him.

Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
