1 Nå var David gammel og mett av dager; og han gjorde sin sønn Salomo til konge over Israel.

Now David was old and full of days; and he made Solomon his son king over Israel.

2 Han samlet alle Israels fyrster, sammen med prestene og levittene.

He gathered together all the princes of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

3 Levittene ble talt fra tretti år og oppover: og tallet på dem, mann for mann, var trettifire tusen.

The Levites were numbered from thirty years old and upward: and their number by their polls, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand.

4 Av disse skulle tjuefire tusen ha oppsyn med arbeidet i Yahwehs hus; og seks tusen var offiserer og dommere;

Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of Yahweh; and six thousand were officers and judges;

5 og fire tusen var dørvoktere; og fire tusen priste Yahweh med de instrumentene som jeg har laget, [sa David], for å gi lovprising.

and four thousand were doorkeepers; and four thousand praised Yahweh with the instruments which I made, [said David], for giving praise.

6 David delte dem inn i grupper etter Levis sønner: Gersjons, Kehats og Meraris slekt.

David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

7 Av gersonittene: Ladan og Sjimi.

Of the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.

8 Ladans sønner: Jehiel, den eldste, og Zetam og Joel, tre i alt.

The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, and Zetham, and Joel, three.

9 Sjimis sønner: Shelomot, Hasiel og Haran, tre i alt. Dette var overhodene for Ladans farsfamilier.

The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, and Haziel, and Haran, three. These were the heads of the fathers' [houses] of Ladan.

10 Sjimis sønner: Jahat, Siza, Je'usj og Beria. Disse fire var Sjimis sønner.

The sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

11 Jahat var den eldste, Siza var den nest eldste, men Je'usj og Beria hadde ikke mange sønner; derfor ble de regnet som én farsfamilie.

Jahath was the chief, and Zizah the second: but Jeush and Beriah didn't have many sons; therefore they became a fathers' house in one reckoning.

12 Kehats sønner: Amram, Jishar, Hebron og Uzziel, fire i alt.

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four.

13 Amrams sønner: Aron og Moses; og Aron ble utskilt for å innvie de helligste tingene, han og hans sønner, for alltid, for å brenne røkelse foran Yahweh, for å tjene ham og velsigne i hans navn for alltid.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was separated, that he should sanctify the most holy things, he and his sons, forever, to burn incense before Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless in his name, forever.

14 Men når det gjelder Moses, Guds mann, ble hans sønner regnet blant Levis stamme.

But as for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi.

15 Moses' sønner: Gersjom og Elieser.

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.

16 Gersjoms sønner: Sjebuel, den eldste.

The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

17 Eliesers sønner: Rehabja, den eldste; og Elieser hadde ingen andre sønner; men Rehabjas sønner var svært mange.

The sons of Eliezer were: Rehabiah the chief; and Eliezer had no other sons; but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

18 Jishars sønner: Shelomit, den eldste.

The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.

19 Hebrons sønner: Jerija, den eldste, Amarja, den andre, Jahasiel, den tredje, og Jekameam, den fjerde.

The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

20 Uzziels sønner: Mika, den eldste, og Jissjia, den andre.

The sons of Uzziel: Micah the chief, and Isshiah the second.

21 Meraris sønner: Mahli og Musji. Mahlis sønner: Eleasar og Kisj.

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

22 Eleasar døde uten å ha sønner, men bare døtre; og deres søsken, Kisjs sønner, tok dem [til koner].

Eleazar died, and had no sons, but daughters only: and their brothers the sons of Kish took them [to wife].

23 Musjis sønner: Mahli, Eder og Jeremot, tre i alt.

The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth, three.

24 Dette var Levis sønner etter deres farsfamilier, overhodene for farsfamiliene til dem som ble talt, med navn, for å utføre tjenesten i Yahwehs hus fra tjue år og oppover.

These were the sons of Levi after their fathers' houses, even the heads of the fathers' [houses] of those of those who were counted, in the number of names by their polls, who did the work for the service of the house of Yahweh, from twenty years old and upward.

25 For David sa, Yahweh, Israels Gud, har gitt sitt folk hvile; og han bor i Jerusalem for alltid:

For David said, Yahweh, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people; and he dwells in Jerusalem forever:

26 og levittene trenger heller ikke lenger å bære teltet og alle dets redskaper for tjenesten.

and also the Levites shall no more have need to carry the tent and all the vessels of it for the service of it.

27 For etter Davids siste ord ble Levis sønner talt, fra tjue år og oppover.

For by the last words of David the sons of Levi were numbered, from twenty years old and upward.

28 Deres plikt var å hjelpe Arons sønner med tjenesten i Yahwehs hus, i forgårdene, i kamrene, og med renselse av alle de hellige ting, og med alt arbeidet ved Guds hus;

For their office was to wait on the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of Yahweh, in the courts, and in the chambers, and in the purifying of all holy things, even the work of the service of the house of God;

29 også med skuebrødene, det fine melet for matofferet, enten det er usyrede kaker eller det som er bakt i pannen, eller det som er gjennomvåt, og med alle slags mål og størrelse;

for the show bread also, and for the fine flour for a meal-offering, whether of unleavened wafers, or of that which is baked in the pan, or of that which is soaked, and for all manner of measure and size;

30 og å stå hver morgen for å takke og lovprise Yahweh, og på samme måte om kvelden;

and to stand every morning to thank and praise Yahweh, and likewise in the evening;

31 og å ofre alle brennoffer til Yahweh på sabbatene, nymånene, og de fastsatte høytidene, etter antallet som er foreskrevet for dem, kontinuerlig foran Yahweh;

and to offer all burnt offerings to Yahweh, on the Sabbaths, on the new moons, and on the set feasts, in number according to the ordinance concerning them, continually before Yahweh;

32 og de skulle ha ansvar for møteteltet, og ansvaret for det hellige området, og ansvaret for Arons sønner, deres brødre, for tjenesten i Yahwehs hus.

and that they should keep the charge of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the holy place, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brothers, for the service of the house of Yahweh.
