1 Etter disse hendelsene hadde Naboth fra Jisreel en vingård som lå i Jisreel, ved siden av palasset til kong Ahab av Samaria.

It happened after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

2 Ahab sa til Naboth: «Gi meg din vingård, så jeg kan få den til en urtehage, for den ligger nær mitt hus. Jeg vil gi deg en bedre vingård i bytte, eller hvis du ønsker det, vil jeg betale deg dens verdi i penger.»

Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near to my house; and I will give you for it a better vineyard than it: or, if it seem good to you, I will give you the worth of it in money.

3 Men Naboth svarte Ahab: «Måtte Herren forby at jeg skulle gi deg fedrearven min.»

Naboth said to Ahab, Yahweh forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you.

4 Ahab gikk hjem, sur og sint på grunn av svaret Naboth fra Jisreel hadde gitt ham da han sa: «Jeg vil ikke gi deg fedrearven min.» Han la seg ned på sengen, vendte ansiktet bort og nektet å spise.

Ahab came into his house sullen and angry because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers. He laid him down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

5 Da kom hans kone, Jesabel, til ham og spurte: «Hvorfor er du så trist, siden du ikke vil spise?»

But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said to him, Why is your spirit so sad, that you eat no bread?

6 Han svarte henne: «Fordi jeg snakket med Naboth fra Jisreel og sa til ham: Gi meg din vingård for penger, eller om det ønskes, vil jeg gi deg en annen vingård i bytte. Men han svarte: Jeg vil ikke gi deg min vingård.»

He said to her, Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it please you, I will give you [another] vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give you my vineyard.

7 Jesabel, hans kone, sa til ham: «Styrer du ikke kongeriket Israel? Stå opp, spis og vær ved godt mot. Jeg skal gi deg vingården til Naboth fra Jisreel.»

Jezebel his wife said to him, Do you now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be merry: I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

8 Så skrev hun brev i Ahabs navn, forseglet dem med hans segl, og sendte brevene til de eldste og de fornemme i byen hans, som bodde der med Naboth.

So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles who were in his city, [and] who lived with Naboth.

9 I brevene skrev hun: «Proklamer en faste, og sett Naboth øverst blant folket.

She wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people:

10 Sett to onde menn mot ham, og la dem vitne mot ham og si: Du har forbannet Gud og kongen. Så før ham ut og stein ham til døde.»

and set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them testify against him, saying, You did curse God and the king. Then carry him out, and stone him to death.

11 Mennene i byen hans, de eldste og de fornemme som bodde der, gjorde som Jesabel hadde bedt dem om, i samsvar med brevene hun hadde sendt dem.

The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them.

12 De proklamerte en faste og satte Naboth øverst blant folket.

They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.

13 De to onde mennene kom og satte seg foran ham. Disse vitnet mot Naboth stilt opp for folket og sa: «Naboth har forbannet Gud og kongen.» Så førte de ham utenfor byen og steinet ham til døde.

The two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him: and the base fellows bore witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.

14 Så sendte de bud til Jesabel og sa: «Naboth er steinet og er død.»

Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead.

15 Da Jesabel hørte at Naboth var steinet og var død, sa hun til Ahab: «Stå opp, ta i eie vingården til Naboth fra Jisreel, som han nektet å selge til deg for penger. For Naboth lever ikke lenger, men er død.»

It happened, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

16 Da Ahab hørte at Naboth var død, sto han opp for å gå ned til vingården til Naboth fra Jisreel for å ta den i eie.

It happened, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

17 Herrens ord kom til Elia fra Tisjbe og sa:

The word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

18 «Stå opp, gå ned for å møte Ahab, Israels konge, som bor i Samaria. Se, han er i vingården til Naboth, hvor han har gått ned for å ta den i eie.

Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who dwells in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he is gone down to take possession of it.

19 Du skal tale til ham og si: Dette sier Herren: Har du drept og også tatt i eie? Du skal tale til ham og si: Dette sier Herren: På det stedet hvor hundene slikket blodet til Naboth, skal hundene slikke ditt blod, også ditt.»

You shall speak to him, saying, Thus says Yahweh, Have you killed and also taken possession? You shall speak to him, saying, Thus says Yahweh, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your blood, even yours.

20 Ahab sa til Elia: «Har du funnet meg, min fiende?» Han svarte: «Ja, jeg har funnet deg, fordi du har solgt deg til å gjøre det som er ondt i Herrens øyne.

Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me, my enemy? He answered, I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh.

21 Se, jeg vil føre ulykke over deg, feie deg fullstendig bort og utrydde alle dine etterkommere som er igjen i Israel.

Behold, I will bring evil on you, and will utterly sweep you away and will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him who is shut up and him who is left at large in Israel:

22 Jeg vil gjøre ditt hus som huset til Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, og som huset til Baesa, Ahijas sønn, for vreden du har fremprovosert og gjort Israel til å synde.»

and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah for the provocation with which you have provoked me to anger, and have made Israel to sin.

23 Og om Jesabel sa Herren: «Hundene skal ete Jesabel ved vollene i Jisreel.»

Of Jezebel also spoke Yahweh, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel.

24 Den som dør av Ahabs hus i byen, skal hundene ete, og den som dør ute på marken, skal himmelens fugler ete.

Him who dies of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him who dies in the field shall the birds of the sky eat.

25 (Det var ingen som Ahab, som solgte seg til å gjøre det som er ondt i Herrens øyne, oppildnet av sin kone Jesabel.

(But there was none like Ahab, who did sell himself to do that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up.

26 Han gjorde meget avskyelig ved å følge avgudene, slik Amorittene hadde gjort, de som Herren hadde drevet ut foran Israels barn.)

He did very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites did, whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel.)

27 Da Ahab hørte disse ordene, flerret han klærne sine, tok på seg sekkestrie på kroppen, fastet og lå i sekkestrie og gikk dempet.

It happened, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

28 Herrens ord kom til Elia fra Tisjbe og sa:

The word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

29 «Ser du hvordan Ahab ydmyker seg for meg? Fordi han ydmyker seg for meg, vil jeg ikke føre ulykken i hans dager, men i hans sønns dager vil jeg føre ulykken over hans hus.»

See you how Ahab humbles himself before me? because he humbles himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son's days will I bring the evil on his house.
