Filisterne samlet alle sine hærer til Afek, mens israelittene slo leir ved kilden i Jisreel.

Now the Philistines gathered together all their hosts to Aphek: and the Israelites encamped by the spring which is in Jezreel.

Høvdingene av filisterne passerte i hundretall og tusentall, og David og hans menn fulgte etter sammen med Akisj.

The lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands; and David and his men passed on in the rearward with Achish.

Filisterhøvdingene spurte: Hva gjør disse hebreerne her? Akisj svarte: Er ikke dette David, tjeneren til Saul, Israels konge, som har vært hos meg i disse dagene, eller rettere sagt, i disse årene? Jeg har ikke funnet noe galt hos ham fra den dagen han kom til meg, til i dag.

Then said the princes of the Philistines, What [do] these Hebrews [here]? Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, Isn't this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or [rather] these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell away [to me] to this day?

Filisterhøvdingene ble sinte på ham og sa: Send mannen tilbake, så han kan dra til det stedet du har utpekt for ham. La ham ikke gå med oss i kamp, for hva om han vender seg mot oss midt i kampen? Hvordan skulle han da kunne forsone seg med sin herre om ikke med hodene til disse mennene?

But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; and the princes of the Philistines said to him, Make the man return, that he may go back to his place where you have appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he become an adversary to us: for with what should this [fellow] reconcile himself to his lord? should it not be with the heads of these men?

Er det ikke denne David de sang om i dansene, hvor de sa: Saul har slått sine tusener, men David sine titusener?

Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, David his ten thousands?

Da kalte Akisj David og sa til ham: Så sant Herren lever, du har vært rettskaffen, og din ferd med meg i hæren er god i mine øyne; jeg har ikke funnet noe ondt hos deg siden den dagen du kom til meg til i dag. Men høvdingene liker deg ikke.

Then Achish called David, and said to him, As Yahweh lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the host is good in my sight; for I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me to this day: nevertheless the lords don't favor you.

Så vend nå tilbake og dra i fred, så du ikke mishager filisternes herrer.

Therefore now return, and go in peace, that you not displease the lords of the Philistines.

David sa til Akisj: Men hva har jeg gjort? Og hva har du funnet hos din tjener fra den dagen jeg kom fremfor deg til i dag, siden jeg ikke kan gå og kjempe mot min herre kongens fiender?

David said to Achish, But what have I done? and what have you found in your servant so long as I have been before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

Akisj svarte David: Jeg vet at du er god i mine øyne, som en Guds engel; men filisterhøvdingene har sagt: Han skal ikke gå opp med oss til kampen.

Achish answered David, I know that you are good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

Stå derfor opp tidlig i morgen med din herres tjenere som har kommet med deg, og når dere står opp tidlig med lyset, dra bort.

Therefore now rise up early in the morning with the servants of your lord who have come with you; and as soon as you are up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

Så sto David opp tidlig, han og hans menn, for å dra tilbake til filisternes land. Filisterne dro opp til Jisreel.

So David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. The Philistines went up to Jezreel.
