1 Når det gjelder tider og anledninger, brødre, er det ikke nødvendig å skrive noe til dere.

But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.

2 For dere vet selv godt at Herrens dag kommer som en tyv om natten.

For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.

3 For når de sier: "Fred og trygghet," da kommer plutselig ødeleggelse over dem, som fødselsveer over en gravid kvinne; og ingen vil unnslippe.

For when they are saying, "Peace and safety," then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape.

4 Men dere, brødre, er ikke i mørket, slik at dagen skulle overraske dere som en tyv.

But you, brothers, aren't in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.

5 Dere er alle lysets barn og dagens barn. Vi tilhører ikke natten eller mørket.

You are all children of light, and children of the day. We don't belong to the night, nor to darkness,

6 La oss derfor ikke sove, som de andre, men la oss våke og være edru.

so then let's not sleep, as the rest do, but let's watch and be sober.

7 For de som sover, sover om natten, og de som drikker seg fulle, er fulle om natten.

For those who sleep, sleep in the night, and those who are drunken are drunken in the night.

8 Men vi som tilhører dagen, la oss være edru, iført troens og kjærlighetens brynje, og med frelsens håp som en hjelm.

But let us, since we belong to the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and, for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For Gud har ikke bestemt oss til vrede, men til å oppnå frelse ved vår Herre Jesus Kristus,

For God didn't appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 han som døde for oss, for at vi, enten vi våker eller sover, skal leve sammen med ham.

who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Forman derfor hverandre og bygg hverandre opp, slik dere også gjør.

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

12 Men vi ber dere, brødre, at dere anerkjenner dem som arbeider blant dere, og står over dere i Herren, og formaner dere,

But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you,

13 og at dere respekterer og hedrer dem i kjærlighet for deres arbeid. Vær i fred med hverandre.

and to respect and honor them in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

14 Vi formaner dere, brødre: forman de udisiplinerte, oppmuntre de motløse, støtt de svake, vær tålmodige mot alle.

We exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be patient toward all.

15 Se til at ingen gjengjelder ondt med ondt mot noen, men streb alltid etter det gode, både mot hverandre og mot alle.

See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good, for one another, and for all.

16 Gled dere alltid.

Rejoice always.

17 Be uten opphør.

Pray without ceasing.

18 Takk for alt, for dette er Guds vilje i Kristus Jesus for dere.

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

19 Ikke slokk Ånden.

Don't quench the Spirit.

20 Forakt ikke profetier.

Don't despise prophesies.

21 Prøv alt, hold fast på det som er godt.

Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.

22 Avstå fra enhver form for ondskap.

Abstain from every form of evil.

23 Må fredens Gud selv hellige dere helt. Må deres hele ånd, sjel og kropp bevares ulastelige ved vår Herre Jesu Kristi komme.

May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Trofast er han som kaller dere, han vil også gjøre det.

Faithful is he who calls you, who will also do it.

25 Brødre, be for oss.

Brothers, pray for us.

26 Hils alle brødrene med et hellig kyss.

Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

27 Jeg befaler dere høytidelig ved Herren at dette brevet blir lest opp for alle de hellige brødre.

I solemnly charge you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the holy brothers.
