Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the assembly of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Lovet være Gud, vår Herre Jesu Kristi Far, barmhjertighetens Far og all trøsts Gud,

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;

4 han som trøster oss i all vår nød, slik at vi kan trøste dem som er i all nød, med den trøst vi selv får fra Gud.

who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

5 For liksom Kristi lidelser er rikelige over oss, så er også vår trøst rikelig ved Kristus.

For as the sufferings of Christ abound to us, even so our comfort also abounds through Christ.

6 Blir vi trengt, er det for deres trøst og frelse. Blir vi trøstet, er det for deres trøst, som virker tålmodighet i dere til å tåle de samme lidelsene som vi lider.

But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer.

7 Vårt håp for dere er stødig, fordi vi vet at som dere er delaktige i lidelsene, så er dere også delaktige i trøsten.

Our hope for you is steadfast, knowing that, since you are partakers of the sufferings, so also are you of the comfort.

8 Vi vil ikke at dere skal være uvitende, søsken, om vår nød som vi opplevde i Asia; vi ble overveldet, over vår evne til å bære, så mye at vi fortvilet selv om livet.

For we don't desire to have you uninformed, brothers,{The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} concerning our affliction which happened to us in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, so much that we despaired even of life.

9 Vi hadde selv dødsdommen i oss, for at vi ikke skulle sette vår lit til oss selv, men til Gud som oppvekker de døde.

Yes, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead,

10 Han som befridde oss fra så stor en død, og som fremdeles befrier; på ham har vi satt vårt håp om at han også fortsatt vil befri oss.

who delivered us out of so great a death, and does deliver; on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;

11 Dere hjelper også til ved deres forbønn, slik at mange kan gi takk for oss på grunn av den velsignelsen vi har fått av mange.

you also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed on us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on your behalf.

12 For vår ros er dette: vårt moralske vitnesbyrd, at vi i renhet og gudsfrykt, ikke i kjødelig visdom men i Guds nåde, levde i verden, og særlig hos dere.

For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

13 For vi skriver ikke andre ting til dere enn det dere leser eller forstår, og jeg håper dere vil forstå helt til slutt;

For we write no other things to you, than what you read or even acknowledge, and I hope you will acknowledge to the end;

14 slik dere delvis har forstått at vi er deres stolthet, som dere også er vår, på vår Herre Jesu dag.

as also you acknowledged us in part, that we are your boasting, even as you also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.

15 I denne tillit bestemte jeg meg for å komme først til dere, for at dere skulle få en dobbelt glede,

In this confidence, I was determined to come first to you, that you might have a second benefit;

16 og gjennom dere reise til Makedonia, og komme tilbake til dere fra Makedonia, og av dere bli sendt videre på reisen til Judea.

and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come to you, and to be sent forward by you on my journey to Judea.

17 Når jeg derfor hadde denne planen, var jeg da vinglete? Eller planla jeg ifølge kjødet, så det er "ja, ja" og "nei, nei" hos meg samtidig?

When I therefore was thus determined, did I show fickleness? Or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the "Yes, yes" and the "No, no?"

18 Men Gud er trofast, vårt ord til dere var ikke "ja" og "nei."

But as God is faithful, our word toward you was not "Yes and no."

19 For Guds Sønn, Jesus Kristus, som ble forkynt blant dere av oss, av meg, Silvanus, og Timoteus, var ikke "ja" og "nei," men i ham er "ja."

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, Silvanus, and Timothy, was not "Yes and no," but in him is "Yes."

20 For så mange som Guds løfter er, har de sitt "ja" i ham. Derfor kommer også vårt "Amen" gjennom ham, til Guds ære ved oss.

For however many are the promises of God, in him is the "Yes." Therefore also through him is the "Amen," to the glory of God through us.

21 Han som stadfester oss sammen med dere i Kristus, og som har salvet oss, er Gud;

Now he who establishes us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;

22 han som også har satt sitt segl på oss og gitt oss Ånden som pant i våre hjerter.

who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.

23 Men jeg kaller Gud til vitne for min sjel, at jeg ikke kom til Korint for å spare dere.

But I call God for a witness to my soul, that I didn't come to Corinth to spare you.

24 Ikke at vi har herredømme over deres tro, men vi er medarbeidere til deres glede, for dere står fast i troen.

Not that we have lordship over your faith, but are fellow workers with you for your joy. For you stand firm in faith.
