1 I det tjuetredje året av Joash, sønn av Akasja, kongen av Juda, begynte Joahaz, sønn av Jehu, å regjere over Israel i Samaria, og han regjerte i sytten år.

In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] seventeen years.

2 Han gjorde det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, og fulgte syndene til Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, som førte Israel til å synde; han vendte seg ikke bort fra dem.

He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; he didn't depart from it.

3 Herrens vrede ble opptent mot Israel, og han overga dem i Hazaels, kongen av Syria, hånd, og i Benhadad, Hazaels sønns hånd, kontinuerlig.

The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, continually.

4 Jehoahaz ba til Herren, og Herren lyttet til ham; for han så hvordan Israel ble undertrykt, at kongen av Syria undertrykte dem.

Jehoahaz begged Yahweh, and Yahweh listened to him; for he saw the oppression of Israel, how that the king of Syria oppressed them.

5 Herren gav Israel en frelser, slik at de kom ut fra syrernes hånd; og Israels barn bodde i teltene sine som før.

(Yahweh gave Israel a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians; and the children of Israel lived in their tents as before.

6 Likevel vendte de seg ikke bort fra syndene til Jeroboams hus, som fikk Israel til å synde, men fortsatte i dem: og Asjerapålen ble også værende i Samaria.

Nevertheless they didn't depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin, but walked therein: and there remained the Asherah also in Samaria.)

7 For han etterlot ikke Jehoahaz mer folk enn femti ryttere, ti vogner, og ti tusen fotsoldater; for kongen av Syria ødela dem, og gjorde dem som støv ved tresking.

For he didn't leave to Jehoahaz of the people save fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria destroyed them, and made them like the dust in threshing.

8 Resten av Jehoahaz' handlinger og alt han gjorde, og hans styrke, er de ikke skrevet i Israels kongers krønikebøker?

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

9 Jehoahaz sov med sine fedre; og de begravde ham i Samaria: og Joash, hans sønn, regjerte i hans sted.

Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his place.

10 I det trettisyvende året av Joash, kongen av Juda, begynte Joahaz' sønn Joash å regjere over Israel i Samaria, og han regjerte i seksten år.

In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, [and reigned] sixteen years.

11 Han gjorde det som var ondt i Herrens øyne; han vendte seg ikke bort fra alle syndene til Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, som førte Israel til å synde; men han fortsatte i dem.

He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh; he didn't depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; but he walked therein.

12 Resten av Joashs handlinger, alt det han gjorde, og hans styrke som han kjempet med mot Amazja, kongen av Juda, er de ikke skrevet i Israels kongers krønikebøker?

Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

13 Joash sov med sine fedre; og Jeroboam satt på hans trone: og Joash ble begravet i Samaria med Israels konger.

Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat on his throne: and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

14 Elisha var syk med den sykdommen han døde av: og Joash, kongen av Israel, kom ned til ham og gråt over ham og sa: Min far, min far, Israels vogner og hestfolk!

Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness of which he died: and Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over him, and said, My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and the horsemen of it!

15 Elisha sa til ham: Ta bue og piler; og han tok bue og piler.

Elisha said to him, Take bow and arrows; and he took to him bow and arrows.

16 Han sa til Israels konge: Legg hånden på buen; og han la sin hånd på den. Elisha la sine hender på kongens hender.

He said to the king of Israel, Put your hand on the bow; and he put his hand [on it]. Elisha laid his hands on the king's hands.

17 Han sa: Åpne vinduet mot øst; og han åpnet det. Da sa Elisha: Skyt; og han skjøt. Han sa: Herrens seierspil, ja, pil av seier over Syria; for du skal slå syrerne ved Afek, inntil du har tilintetgjort dem.

He said, Open the window eastward; and he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot; and he shot. He said, Yahweh's arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria; for you shall strike the Syrians in Aphek, until you have consumed them.

18 Han sa: Ta pilene; og han tok dem. Han sa til Israels konge: Slå jorden; og han slo tre ganger og stanset.

He said, Take the arrows; and he took them. He said to the king of Israel, Smite on the ground; and he struck thrice, and stayed.

19 Guds mann ble sint på ham og sa: Du skulle ha slått fem eller seks ganger; da hadde du slått Syria inntil du hadde tilintetgjort det, men nå skal du kun slå Syria tre ganger.

The man of God was angry with him, and said, You should have struck five or six times: then had you struck Syria until you had consumed it, whereas now you shall strike Syria but thrice.

20 Elisha døde, og de begravde ham. Nå invaderte Moabittbandene landet ved årets inngang.

Elisha died, and they buried him. Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.

21 Det skjedde mens de var i ferd med å begrave en mann, at de så en bande; og de kastet mannen inn i Elishas grav: og så snart mannen rørte ved Elishas knokler, kom han til live og stod opp på føttene.

It happened, as they were burying a man, that behold, they spied a band; and they cast the man into the tomb of Elisha: and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

22 Hazael, kongen av Syria, undertrykte Israel alle Jehoahaz' dager.

Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

23 Men Herren var nådig mot dem, og hadde medfølelse med dem, og hadde respekt for dem på grunn av sin pakt med Abraham, Isak og Jakob, og ville ikke ødelegge dem, heller ikke kastet han dem fra sitt ansikt ennå.

But Yahweh was gracious to them, and had compassion on them, and had respect to them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.

24 Hazael, kongen av Syria, døde; og Benhadad, hans sønn, regjerte i hans sted.

Hazael king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned in his place.

25 Jehoash, sønn av Jehoahaz, tok tilbake ut av hånd til Benhadad, Hazaels sønn, de byene som han hadde tatt fra Jehoahaz, hans far, ved krig. Tre ganger slo Joash ham og gjenvant Israels byer.

Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash strike him, and recovered the cities of Israel.
