1 Da kong Hiskia hørte det, flerret han klærne sine, kledde seg i sekkestrie og gikk inn i Herrens hus.

It happened, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.

2 Han sendte Eliakim, som styrte husholdningen, og statsskriveren Sebna og prestene, i sekkestrie, til profeten Jesaja, Amos' sønn.

He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 De sa til ham: Dette sier Hiskia: Denne dagen er en dag med trengsel, refs og vanære; det er som når barn skal fødes, og det ikke er kraft til å føde dem.

They said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

4 Kanskje din Gud Herren vil høre alle ordene til Rabsake, som er sendt av kongen av Assyria, for å håne den levende Gud, og Gud vil klandre ordene som Herren din Gud har hørt. Så be for den rest som er igjen.

It may be Yahweh your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.

5 Kong Hiskias tjenere kom da til Jesaja.

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 Jesaja sa til dem: Dette skal dere si til deres herre: Dette sier Herren: Vær ikke redd for de ordene du har hørt, hvor kongens tjenere fra Assyria har spottet meg.

Isaiah said to them, Thus shall you tell your master, Thus says Yahweh, Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Se, jeg vil sette en ånd i ham, så han hører et rykte og vender tilbake til sitt eget land, og jeg skal få ham drept med sverdet i hans eget land.

Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear news, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 Så vendte Rabsake tilbake og fant kongen av Assyria i kamp mot Libna, for han hadde hørt at han hadde forlatt Lakis.

So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

9 Da han hørte at Tirhaka, kongen av Etiopia, hadde dratt ut for å kjempe mot ham, sendte han budbringere tilbake til Hiskia og sa:

When he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,

10 Dette skal dere si til kongen av Juda, Hiskia: La ikke din Gud, som du stoler på, bedra deg ved å si: Jerusalem skal ikke bli gitt i kongen av Assyrias hånd.

Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11 Hør, du har hørt hva kongene av Assyria har gjort med alle land, og utslettet dem fullstendig; og skal du bli reddet?

Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shall you be delivered?

12 Har gudene fra nasjonene reddet dem som mine fedre ødela, som Gosan, Haran og Resef, og Edens barn som var i Telassar?

Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?

13 Hvor er kongen av Hamat, kongen av Arpad, kongen av byen Sefarva'im, av Hena og Iva?

Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?

14 Hiskia tok imot brevet fra budbringerne og leste det; og Hiskia gikk opp til Herrens hus og brettet det ut for Herren.

Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.

15 Hiskia ba for Herrens åsyn og sa: Herre, Israels Gud, som troner over kjerubene, du er Gud, du alene, over alle jordens riker; du har skapt himmelen og jorden.

Hezekiah prayed before Yahweh, and said, Yahweh, the God of Israel, who sit [above] the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.

16 Herre, bøy ditt øre og hør; åpne dine øyne, Herre, og se; og hør ordene til Sankerib, som han har sendt for å håne den levende Gud.

Incline your ear, Yahweh, and hear; open your eyes, Yahweh, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent him to defy the living God.

17 Det er sant, Herre, at kongene av Assyria har ødelagt alle nasjoner og deres land,

Of a truth, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,

18 og kastet deres guder i ilden; for de var ikke guder, men et verk av menneskehender, av tre og stein; derfor har de ødelagt dem.

and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

19 Så nå, Herre vår Gud, frels oss, jeg ber deg, fra hans hånd, så alle jordens riker kan vite at du, Herre, er Gud, du alene.

Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save you us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you Yahweh are God alone.

20 Så sendte Jesaja, Amoss sønn, bud til Hiskia og sa: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Fordi du har bedt til meg mot Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, har jeg hørt deg.

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard [you].

21 Dette er det ord som Herren har talt mot ham: Sions jomfrudatter forakter deg og spotter deg; Jerusalems datter rister på hodet etter deg.

This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

22 Hvem har du hånet og spottet? Hvem har du hevet din stemme og løftet dine øyne høyt mot? Det er mot Israels Hellige.

Whom have you defied and blasphemed? and against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Israel.

23 Ved dine budbringere har du hånet Herren, og sagt: Med mengden av mine vogner har jeg dratt opp til fjellenes høyder, til Libanons innerste deler; og jeg vil kutte ned de høye sedrene og de utvalgte sypressene; og jeg vil komme inn i hans ytterste bosted, i hans fruktbare slette.

By your messengers you have defied the Lord, and have said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and the choice fir trees of it; and I will enter into his farthest lodging-place, the forest of his fruitful field.

24 Jeg har gravd brønner og drukket fremmede vann, og med sålen av mine føtter vil jeg tørke opp alle elvene i Egypt.

I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.

25 Har du ikke hørt hvordan jeg har gjort dette lenge siden, og formet det fra gammel tid? Nå har jeg fått det til å skje, så du kan gjøre festningsbyene til ruinhauger.

Haven't you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

26 Derfor hadde deres innbyggere liten makt, de ble skremt og forvirret; de var som gresset på marken, som den grønne urten, som gresset på hustakene, og som korn som er brent av før det er grodd opp.

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain blasted before it is grown up.

27 Men jeg vet når du sitter, når du går ut, når du kommer inn, og ditt raseri mot meg.

But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me.

28 På grunn av ditt raseri mot meg, og fordi din arroganse har nådd mine ører, vil jeg sette en krok i nesen din og et tømme i leppene dine, og jeg vil vende deg tilbake på den veien du kom.

Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance is come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

29 Dette skal være tegnet for deg: Dette året skal du spise det som vokser av seg selv, og i det andre året det som vokser opp av det samme; og i det tredje året skal du så og høste, plante vingårder og spise av dets frukt.

This shall be the sign to you: You shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow you, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of it.

30 Resten som har unnsluppet av Judas hus skal igjen slå rot nedover og bære frukt oppover.

The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

31 For ut fra Jerusalem skal gå ut en rest, og de som unnslipper fra Sion: Herrens iver skal utføre dette.

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape: the zeal of Yahweh shall perform this.

32 Derfor sier Herren om kongen av Assyria: Han skal ikke komme til denne byen, ikke skyte en pil der, ikke komme foran den med skjold, heller ikke bygge en voll imot den.

Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.

33 Den veien han kom, skal han vende tilbake, og han skal ikke komme til denne byen, sier Herren.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city, says Yahweh.

34 For jeg vil beskytte denne byen for å redde den, for min egen skyld og for min tjener Davids skyld.

For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

35 Det skjedde den natten at Herrens engel gikk ut og slo i hjel ett hundre og åttifem tusen av assyrernes leir; og da folk sto opp tidlig om morgenen, se, da var de alle døde kropper.

It happened that night, that the angel of Yahweh went forth, and struck in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred eighty-five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

36 Så dro Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, tilbake, og han vendte hjem og bodde i Nineve.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh.

37 Det skjedde mens han tilba i sitt tempel for Nisrok, sin gud, at Adrammelek og Sareser slo ham i hjel med sverdet; og de flyktet til Ararats land. Og hans sønn Esarhaddon ble konge etter ham.

It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.
