1 Det skjedde ved årets begynnelse, på tiden når konger pleier å dra ut i krig, at David sendte Joab og sine tjenere med ham, og hele Israel; de ødela ammonittene og beleiret Rabba. Men David ble igjen i Jerusalem.

It happened, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

2 En kveld, da David sto opp fra sin seng og gikk opp på taket av kongens hus, så han en kvinne som badet, og kvinnen var veldig vakker å se på.

It happened at evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked on the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look on.

3 David sendte bud og spurte om kvinnen. Noen sa: «Er ikke dette Batseba, datteren til Eliam, kona til Uria, hetitten?»

David send and inquired after the woman. One said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

4 Da sendte David budbringere og hentet henne; og hun kom til ham, og han lå med henne (for hun hadde renset seg fra sin urenhet); så vendte hun tilbake til sitt hus.

David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned to her house.

5 Kvinnen ble gravid; og hun sendte bud til David og sa: «Jeg er med barn.»

The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

6 David sendte da bud til Joab og sa: «Send Uria, hetitten, til meg.» Joab sendte Uria til David.

David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. Joab sent Uriah to David.

7 Da Uria kom til ham, spurte David om Joabs tilstand, hvordan folket hadde det, og hvordan krigen gikk.

When Uriah was come to him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

8 David sa til Uria, «Gå ned til ditt hus og vask dine føtter.» Uria gikk ut fra kongens hus, og en del mat fra kongen fulgte med ham.

David said to Uriah, Go down to your house, and wash your feet. Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess [of food] from the king.

9 Men Uria sov ved inngangen til kongens hus med alle sin herres tjenere, og han gikk ikke ned til sitt hus.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and didn't go down to his house.

10 Da de fortalte David, «Uria gikk ikke ned til sitt hus,» sa David til Uria: «Kommer du ikke fra en reise? Hvorfor gikk du ikke ned til ditt hus?»

When they had told David, saying, Uriah didn't go down to his house, David said to Uriah, Haven't you come from a journey? why did you not go down to your house?

11 Uria svarte David: «Arken, Israel og Juda bor i telt; og min herre Joab og min herres tjenere er leiret ute i det åpne; skulle jeg da gå hjem og spise og drikke og ligge med min kone? Så sant du lever, og så sant din sjel lever, vil jeg ikke gjøre dette.»

Uriah said to David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing.

12 David sa til Uria: «Bli her også i dag, så skal jeg la deg dra i morgen.» Så ble Uria i Jerusalem den dagen, og den neste.

David said to Uriah, Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the next day.

13 Da David kalte ham, spiste han og drakk hos ham, og han gjorde ham beruset. Men om kvelden gikk han ut for å ligge på sin seng blant sin herres tjenere, og han gikk ikke ned til sitt hus.

When David had called him, he ate and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn't go down to his house.

14 Om morgenen skjedde det at David skrev et brev til Joab og sendte det med Uria.

It happened in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

15 Han skrev i brevet: «Sett Uria foran der kampen er hardest, og trekk dere tilbake fra ham, så han blir truffet og dør.»

He wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire you from him, that he may be struck, and die.

16 Da Joab holdt vakt over byen, satte han Uria på et sted hvor han visste at tapre menn var.

It happened, when Joab kept watch on the city, that he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.

17 Mennene i byen rykket ut og kjempet mot Joab; noen av folkene, selv av Davids tjenere, falt, og også Uria, hetitten, døde.

The men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

18 Så sendte Joab bud og fortalte David alt som hadde hendt i krigen.

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

19 Han befalte budbringeren og sa: «Når du har fortalt kongen alt som har skjedd i krigen,

and he charged the messenger, saying, "When you have made an end of telling all the things concerning the war to the king,

20 hvis kongens vrede oppstår, og han sier til deg: 'Hvorfor gikk dere så nær byen for å kjempe? Visste dere ikke at de ville skyte fra muren?

it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he tells you, 'Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn't you know that they would shoot from the wall?

21 Hvem slo Abimelek, sønn av Jerubbeset? Kastet ikke en kvinne en overliggende møllestein på ham fra muren, så han døde ved Tebes? Hvorfor gikk dere så nær muren?' Så skal du si: 'Din tjener Uria, hetitten, er også død.'"

who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn't a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?' then shall you say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.'"

22 Så dro budbringeren bort og kom og fortalte David alt Joab hadde sendt ham for.

So the messenger went, and came and shown David all that Joab had sent him for.

23 Budbringeren sa til David: «Mennene vant over oss og kom ut mot oss på marken, og vi drev dem tilbake til portens inngang.

The messenger said to David, The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.

24 Men bueskytterne skjøt på dine tjenere fra muren, og noen av kongens tjenere er døde, og også din tjener Uria, hetitten, er død.»

The shooters shot at your servants from off the wall; and some of the king's servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.

25 Da sa David til budbringeren: «Slik skal du si til Joab: 'La ikke dette uroe deg, for sverdet sluker den ene så vel som den andre; styrk kampen mot byen og ødelegg den.' Oppmuntre ham.»

Then David said to the messenger, Thus shall you tell Joab, Don't let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another; make your battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage you him.

26 Da Urias kone hørte at Uria, hennes mann, var død, sørget hun over sin ektemann.

When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.

27 Da sørgetiden var forbi, sendte David bud og hentet henne hjem til sitt hus, og hun ble hans kone og fødte ham en sønn. Men det David hadde gjort, var ondt i Herrens øyne.

When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh.
