1 Jeg befaler deg derfor for Gud og Herren Jesus Kristus, han som skal dømme levende og døde ved sin gjenkomst og sitt rike:

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom:

2 Forkynn ordet, vær ivrig i tide og utide, irettesett, advar og formant, med all tålmodighet og undervisning.

preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching.

3 For det skal komme en tid da de ikke vil tåle den sunne lære, men etter egne lyster skaffe seg lærere som taler det de vil høre.

For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts;

4 De vil vende ørene bort fra sannheten og i stedet vende seg til myter.

and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn aside to fables.

5 Men du, vær edru i alle ting, lid ondt, gjør en evangelists verk og fullfør din tjeneste.

But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

6 For jeg blir alt utøst som et drikkoffer, og tiden for min bortgang er nær.

For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come.

7 Jeg har stridd den gode strid. Jeg har fullført løpet. Jeg har bevart troen.

I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.

8 Nå ligger rettferdighetens krone klar for meg, som Herren, den rettferdige dommer, skal gi meg på den dagen; og ikke bare meg, men også alle dem som har elsket hans gjenkomst.

From now on, there is stored up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day; and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.

9 Gjør ditt beste for å komme til meg snart,

Be diligent to come to me soon,

10 for Demas har forlatt meg, fordi han elsket denne nåværende verden, og dro til Tessalonika; Krescens dro til Galatia, og Titus til Dalmatia.

for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

11 Bare Lukas er hos meg. Ta med Markus og bring ham med deg, for han er nyttig for meg i tjenesten.

Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministering.

12 Jeg har sendt Tykikus til Efesos.

But I sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 Ta med kappen som jeg etterlot i Troas hos Karpos når du kommer, og bøkene, særlig pergamentene.

Bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus when you come, and the books, especially the parchments.

14 Koppermeden Aleksander gjorde meg mye ondt. Herren skal gjengjelde ham etter hans gjerninger.

Alexander, the coppersmith, did much evil to me. The Lord will repay him according to his works,

15 Pass på ham du også, for han motsatte seg vår tale sterkt.

of whom you also must beware; for he greatly opposed our words.

16 Ved første forsvarsmøte kom ingen meg til hjelp, men alle forlot meg. Måtte det ikke bli tilregnet dem.

At my first defense, no one came to help me, but all left me. May it not be held against them.

17 Men Herren sto meg bi og styrket meg, for at budskapet gjennom meg skulle bli fullt ut forkynt, og alle hedningene skulle høre det; og jeg ble reddet ut av løvens gap.

But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

18 Og Herren skal redde meg fra enhver ond gjerning og bevare meg til sitt himmelske rike; ham være ære i all evighet. Amen.

And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom; to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
