1 Nå fikk apostlene og søsknene som var i Judea høre at også hedningene hadde tatt imot Guds ord.

Now the apostles and the brothers{The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

2 Da Peter kom opp til Jerusalem, tok de som var av omskjærelsen til orde mot ham,

When Peter had come up to Jerusalem, those who were of the circumcision contended with him,

3 og sa: «Du har gått inn til uomskårne menn og spist med dem!»

saying, "You went in to uncircumcised men, and ate with them!"

4 Men Peter begynte å forklare for dem rekkefølgen av det som skjedde, og sa:

But Peter began, and explained to them in order, saying,

5 «Jeg var i byen Joppa og ba, og i et åndelig syn så jeg en visjon: En slags beholder kom ned, som et stort laken, fire hjørner ble senket fra himmelen. Den nådde helt frem til meg.

"I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain container descending, like it was a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners. It came as far as me.

6 Da jeg så nøye på det, betraktet jeg og så jordens firbeinte dyr, ville dyr, krypende skapninger og himmelens fugler.

When I had looked intently at it, I considered, and saw the four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky.

7 Så hørte jeg en stemme som sa til meg: 'Stå opp, Peter, slakt og spis!'

I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Rise, Peter, kill and eat!'

8 Men jeg svarte: 'Aldri, Herre, for aldri har noe vanhellig eller urent kommet inn i min munn.'

But I said, 'Not so, Lord, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.'

9 Men en stemme fra himmelen svarte meg igjen: 'Det Gud har renset, skal ikke du kalle urent.'

But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, 'What God has cleansed, don't you call unclean.'

10 Dette skjedde tre ganger, og alt ble deretter tatt opp igjen til himmelen.

This was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven.

11 Med det samme stod tre menn foran huset der jeg var, sendt til meg fra Cæsarea.

Behold, immediately three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.

12 Ånden ba meg gå med dem uten å tvile. Disse seks brødrene fulgte også med meg, og vi gikk inn i mannens hus.

The Spirit told me to go with them, without discriminating. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered into the man's house.

13 Han fortalte oss hvordan han hadde sett en engel stå i sitt hus og si: 'Send bud til Joppa og hent Simon, som har tilnavnet Peter,

He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying to him, 'Send to Joppa, and get Simon, whose surname is Peter,

14 som vil tale til deg og ved disse ordene bli du og hele ditt hus frelst.'

who will speak to you words by which you will be saved, you and all your house.'

15 Mens jeg begynte å tale, falt Den Hellige Ånd på dem, som på oss i begynnelsen.

As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.

16 Da husket jeg Herrens ord, hvordan han sa: 'Johannes døpte med vann, men dere skal bli døpt med Den Hellige Ånd.'

I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.'

17 Hvis nå Gud ga dem den samme gave som oss, da vi trodde på Herren Jesus Kristus, hvem var jeg, som kunne stå Gud imot?»

If then God gave to them the same gift as us, when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?"

18 Da de hørte dette, ble de stille og priste Gud, og sa: «Så også til hedningene har Gud gitt omvendelse til liv!»

When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, "Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!"

19 De som var blitt spredt utover på grunn av trengslene som oppstod omkring Stefanus, nådde til Fønikia, Kypros og Antiokia, men de forkynte ordet kun til jøder.

They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Jews only.

20 Men noen av dem, menn fra Kypros og Kyrene, som kom til Antiokia, talte til grekerne og forkynte Herren Jesus.

But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Greeks, preaching the Lord Jesus.

21 Herrens hånd var med dem, og mange kom til troen og vendte seg til Herren.

The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord.

22 Ryktet om dem nådde forsamlingen i Jerusalem, og de sendte Barnabas til Antiokia.

The report concerning them came to the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem. They sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch,

23 Da han kom dit og så Guds nåde, ble han glad og oppmuntret dem alle til med hjertets vilje å holde fast ved Herren.

who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain near to the Lord.

24 For han var en god mann, full av Den Hellige Ånd og tro, og mange ble lagt til Herren.

For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and many people were added to the Lord.

25 Barnabas reiste deretter til Tarsus for å lete etter Saulus.

Barnabas went out to Tarsus to look for Saul.

26 Da han fant ham, brakte han ham til Antiokia. Der var de sammen med menigheten et helt år og underviste mange mennesker. Disiplene ble først kalt kristne i Antiokia.

When he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. It happened, that for a whole year they were gathered together with the assembly, and taught many people. The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

27 I de dagene kom noen profeter fra Jerusalem ned til Antiokia.

Now in these days, prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.

28 En av dem, ved navn Agabus, reiste seg og profeterte ved Ånden, at det skulle bli en stor hungersnød over hele verden, noe som også hendte under Claudius.

One of them named Agabus stood up, and indicated by the Spirit that there should be a great famine all over the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius.

29 Disiplene bestemte, i den grad de hadde midler, å sende hjelp til brødrene som bodde i Judea,

As any of the disciples had plenty, each determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judea;

30 og det gjorde de; de sendte det til de eldste ved Barnabas' og Saulus' hender.

which they also did, sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
