1 Etter dette forlot Paulus Aten og kom til Korint.

After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth.

2 Der fant han en jøde ved navn Akvilas, fra Pontos i opprinnelse. Han var nylig kommet fra Italia med sin kone Priskilla, fordi Klaudius hadde beordret at alle jøder skulle forlate Roma. Paulus gikk til dem,

He found a certain Jew named Aquila, a man of Pontus by race, who had recently come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome. He came to them,

3 og fordi de hadde samme håndverk, ble han hos dem og arbeidet. De var teltmakere.

and because he practiced the same trade, he lived with them and worked, for by trade they were tent makers.

4 Hver sabbat talte han i synagogen og overbeviste både jøder og grekere.

He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded Jews and Greeks.

5 Da Silas og Timoteus kom ned fra Makedonia, ble Paulus drevet av Ånden til å vitne for jødene at Jesus var Kristus.

But when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ.

6 Men da de motsatte seg ham og spottet, ristet han av klærne sine og sa: "Deres blod være over deres eget hode! Jeg er ren. Heretter går jeg til hedningene."

When they opposed him and blasphemed, he shook out his clothing and said to them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am clean. From now on, I will go to the Gentiles!"

7 Han forlot stedet og gikk inn i huset til en mann som het Justus, en som tilbad Gud. Hans hus lå like ved siden av synagogen.

He departed there, and went into the house of a certain man named Justus, one who worshiped God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.

8 Krispus, synagogeforstander, trodde på Herren med hele sin husstand. Mange av korinterne som hørte, trodde også og ble døpt.

Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord with all his house. Many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.

9 Herren sa til Paulus om natten i et syn: "Frykt ikke, men tal og vær ikke taus;

The Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision, "Don't be afraid, but speak and don't be silent;

10 for jeg er med deg, og ingen skal overfalle deg for å skade deg, for jeg har mange folk i denne byen."

for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many people in this city."

11 Han bodde der halvannet år og lærte Guds ord blant dem.

He lived there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

12 Mens Gallio var prokonsul i Akaia, reiste jødene enstemmig seg mot Paulus og førte ham for dommersetet,

But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him before the judgment seat,

13 og sa: "Denne mannen overtaler folk til å dyrke Gud i strid med loven."

saying, "This man persuades men to worship God contrary to the law."

14 Men da Paulus skulle til å åpne munnen, sa Gallio til jødene: "Om det gjaldt en overtredelse eller en urettferdig handling, dere jøder, ville jeg ha tålt dere,

But when Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If indeed it were a matter of wrong or of wicked crime, you Jews, it would be reasonable that I should bear with you;

15 men når det gjelder spørsmål om ord og navn og deres egen lov, får dere ta dere av det selv. Jeg vil ikke være dommer i slike saker."

but if they are questions about words and names and your own law, look to it yourselves. For I don't want to be a judge of these matters."

16 Han drev dem bort fra dommersetet.

He drove them from the judgment seat.

17 Da grep alle grekerne Sosthenes, synagogeforstanderen, og slo ham foran dommersetet. Gallio brydde seg ikke om dette.

Then all the Greeks laid hold on Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. Gallio didn't care about any of these things.

18 Paulus ble der mange flere dager, tok avskjed med brødrene og seilte til Syria, sammen med Priskilla og Akvilas. Han barberte hodet i Kenkreæ, for han hadde et løfte.

Paul, having stayed after this many more days, took his leave of the brothers,{The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} and sailed from there for Syria, together with Priscilla and Aquila. He shaved his head in Cenchreae, for he had a vow.

19 Han kom til Efesos og forlot dem der; men han selv gikk inn i synagogen og samtalte med jødene.

He came to Ephesus, and he left them there; but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews.

20 Da de ba ham om å bli lenger, sa han nei;

When they asked him to stay with them a longer time, he declined;

21 men sa farvel, og sa: "Jeg må for enhver pris holde den kommende høytiden i Jerusalem, men jeg vil komme tilbake til dere hvis Gud vil." Så seilte han fra Efesos.

but taking his leave of them, and saying, "I must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem, but I will return again to you if God wills," he set sail from Ephesus.

22 Da han landet i Cæsarea, dro han opp og hilste på menigheten, og dro ned til Antiokia.

When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the assembly, and went down to Antioch.

23 Etter en tid der dro han av sted gjennom Galatia og Frygia, og styrket alle disiplene.

Having spent some time there, he departed, and went through the region of Galatia, and Phrygia, in order, establishing all the disciples.

24 En viss jøde ved navn Apollos, en elokvent mann fra Alexandria, kom til Efesos. Han var en sterk kjenner av Skriftene.

Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by race, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus. He was mighty in the Scriptures.

25 Denne mannen var opplært i Herrens vei og talte med inderlighet og underviste nøyaktig om Jesus, selv om han bare kjente til Johannes' dåp.

This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, although he knew only the baptism of John.

26 Han begynte å tale frimodig i synagogen. Da Priskilla og Akvilas hørte ham, tok de ham til side og forklarte Guds vei mer presist for ham.

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside, and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

27 Da han bestemte seg for å dra til Akaia, oppmuntret brødrene ham, og skrev til disiplene om å ta imot ham. Han kom, og var til stor hjelp for dem som ved nåde hadde kommet til tro;

When he had determined to pass over into Achaia, the brothers encouraged him, and wrote to the disciples to receive him. When he had come, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace;

28 for han motsa jødene kraftig, og viste offentlig gjennom Skriftene at Jesus var Kristus.

for he powerfully refuted the Jews, publicly showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
