1 I de dager, da antallet av disiplene økte, oppsto det en klage fra de gresktalende jødene mot hebreerne fordi deres enker ble oversett i den daglige utdelingen av mat.

Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, a complaint arose from the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily service.

2 De tolv kalte sammen hele flokken av disipler og sa: "Det er ikke riktig at vi forsømmer Guds ord for å betjene ved bordene.

The twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not appropriate for us to forsake the word of God and serve tables.

3 Derfor, brødre, velg ut blant dere sju menn med godt omdømme, fulle av Den Hellige Ånd og visdom, som vi kan sette til denne oppgaven.

Therefore select from among you, brothers, seven men of good report, full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

But we will continue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word."

5 Denne talen fant bifall hos hele mengden. De valgte ut Stefanus, en mann full av tro og Den Hellige Ånd, Filip, Prokorus, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas, og Nikolaos, en proselytt fra Antiokia.

These words pleased the whole multitude. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch;

6 Disse førte de fram for apostlene, som ba og la hendene på dem.

whom they set before the apostles. When they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

7 Guds ord spredte seg, og tallet på disiplene i Jerusalem økte sterkt. Mange av prestene ble også lydige mot troen.

The word of God increased and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly. A great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

8 Stefanus, full av tro og kraft, utførte store undere og tegn blant folket.

Stephen, full of faith and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people.

9 Men noen fra synagogen kalt "De Frigivnes", og fra kyrenske, alexandrinske, kilianske og asiatiske områder sto opp og diskuterte med Stefanus.

But some of those who were of the synagogue called "The Libertines," and of the Cyrenians, of the Alexandrians, and of those of Cilicia and Asia arose, disputing with Stephen.

10 De kunne ikke stå imot den visdommen og Ånden han talte med.

They weren't able to withstand the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.

11 Så overtalte de i hemmelighet noen menn til å si: "Vi har hørt ham tale blasfemiske ord mot Moses og Gud."

Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God."

12 De hisset opp folket, de eldste og de skriftlærde, grep ham og førte ham for rådet.

They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, and came against him and seized him, and brought him in to the council,

13 Der satte de fram falske vitner som sa: "Denne mannen slutter aldri å tale mot dette hellige sted og loven.

and set up false witnesses who said, "This man never stops speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law.

14 For vi har hørt ham si at denne Jesus fra Nasaret vil ødelegge dette stedet og endre de skikkene som Moses ga oss."

For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us."

15 Alle som satt i rådet stirret på ham og så at ansiktet hans så ut som ansiktet til en engel.

All who sat in the council, fastening their eyes on him, saw his face like it was the face of an angel.
