1 Hør dette ordet som jeg tar opp som en klagesang over dere, Israels hus.

Listen to this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel.

2 «Israels jomfru har falt; Hun skal ikke reise seg igjen. Hun er kastet ned i sitt land; Det er ingen som reiser henne opp.»

"The virgin of Israel has fallen; She shall rise no more. She is cast down on her land; There is no one to raise her up."

3 For så sier Herren Gud: «Byen som dro ut med tusen, skal ha hundre igjen, og den som dro ut med hundre, skal ha ti igjen for Israels hus.»

For thus says the Lord Yahweh: "The city that went forth a thousand shall have a hundred left, And that which went forth one hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel."

4 For så sier Herren til Israels hus: «Søk meg, og dere skal leve;

For thus says Yahweh to the house of Israel: "Seek me, and you will live;

5 Men søk ikke Betel, Gå ikke inn i Gilgal, Og dra ikke til Beersheba. For Gilgal skal gå i eksil, Og Betel skal bli til intet.»

But don't seek Bethel, Nor enter into Gilgal, And don't pass to Beersheba: For Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, And Bethel shall come to nothing.

6 Søk Herren, og dere skal leve, For at han ikke skal bryte ut som ild i Josefs hus, Og fortære det, uten noen til å slokke i Betel.

Seek Yahweh, and you will live; Lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, And it devour, and there be no one to quench it in Bethel.

7 Dere som forvandler rettferdighet til malurt, Og kaster rettferd til jorden:

You who turn justice to wormwood, And cast down righteousness to the earth:

8 Søk ham som skapte Pleiadene og Orion, Som gjør skyggen av død til morgen, Og gjør dagen mørk med natt; Som kaller på havets vann, Og heller det ut over jorden, Herren er hans navn,

Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, And turns the shadow of death into the morning, And makes the day dark with night; Who calls for the waters of the sea, And pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,

9 Han som bringer plutselig ødeleggelse over de sterke, Så ødeleggelse kommer på festningen.

Who brings sudden destruction on the strong, So that destruction comes on the fortress.

10 De hater den som irettesetter i porten, Og de avskyr den som taler uten feil.

They hate him who reproves in the gate, And they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.

11 Fordi dere undertrykker de fattige, Og tar kornavgift fra dem: Dere har bygd hus av hugget stein, Men dere skal ikke bo i dem. Dere har plantet deilige vinmarker, Men dere skal ikke drikke vinen fra dem.

Forasmuch therefore as you trample on the poor, And take taxes from him of wheat: You have built houses of hewn stone, But you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, But you shall not drink their wine.

12 For jeg vet hvor mange dine overtredelser er, Og hvor store dine synder er – Dere som plager de rettferdige, Tar bestikkelser, Og avviser de trengende i retten.

For I know how many your offenses, And how great are your sins-- You who afflict the just, Who take a bribe, And who turn aside the needy in the courts.

13 Derfor skal den kloke tie ved slike tider; For det er en ond tid.

Therefore he who is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; For it is an evil time.

14 Søk godt og ikke ondt, Så dere kan leve; Og så vil Herren, hærskarenes Gud, være med dere, Som dere sier.

Seek good, and not evil, That you may live; And so Yahweh, the God of hosts, will be with you, As you say.

15 Hat det onde, elsk det gode, Etabler rettferdighet i retten. Kanskje vil Herren, hærskarenes Gud, være nådig mot restene av Josef.»

Hate evil, love good, And establish justice in the courts. It may be that Yahweh, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph."

16 Derfor sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Herren: «Det skal være klage i alle brede gater; Og de skal si på alle gatene, 'Ve! Ve!' Og de skal kalle bonden til sorg, Og de som kan klagesang til klage.

Therefore thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the Lord: "Wailing will be in all the broad ways; And they will say in all the streets, 'Alas! Alas!' And they will call the farmer to mourning, And those who are skillful in lamentation to wailing.

17 I alle vinmarker skal det være klage; For jeg vil gå gjennom midten av dere,» sier Herren.

In all vineyards there will be wailing; For I will pass through the midst of you," says Yahweh.

18 «Ve dere som lengter etter Herrens dag! Hvorfor lengter dere etter Herrens dag? Den er mørke og ikke lys.

As if a man fled from a lion, And a bear met him; Or he went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, And a snake bit him.

20 Vil ikke Herrens dag være mørke og ikke lys? Ja, veldig mørk, uten noe lys i seg?

Will the day of Yahweh not be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

21 Jeg hater, jeg forakter deres høytider, Og jeg tåler ikke deres høytidelige forsamlinger.

I hate, I despise your feasts, And I can't stand your solemn assemblies.

22 Ja, selv om dere ofrer meg brennoffer og grødeoffer, Vil jeg ikke akseptere dem; Heller ikke vil jeg se på fredsofrene fra deres fete dyr.

Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal-offerings, I will not accept them; Neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat animals.

23 Ta bort fra meg lyden av deres sanger! Jeg vil ikke høre musikken fra deres harper.

Take away from me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps.

24 Men la rettferdigheten strømme som elver, Og rettferdigheten som en mektig strøm.

But let justice roll on like rivers, And righteousness like a mighty stream.

25 «Brakte dere ofre og gaver til meg i ørkenen i førti år, Israels hus?

"Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, house of Israel?

26 Ja, dere bar med dere teltet til deres konge og Sakkut, deres avbildning, stjernen til deres gud, som dere laget til dere selv.

Yes, you have borne the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.
