I det tredje året av Jojakims regjeringstid, kongen av Juda, kom Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, til Jerusalem og beleiret det.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.

Herren overgav Jojakim, kongen av Juda, i hans hånd, sammen med en del av karene i Guds hus; og han førte dem til landet Sinear, til huset til sin gud. Han plasserte karene i skattkammeret til sin gud.

The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god.

Kongen talte til Ashpenaz, lederen for hoffmennene, at han skulle føre inn noen av Israels barn, av kongelig slekt og av de adelige,

The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in [certain] of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;

unge menn uten lyte, som var vakre å se til, dyktige i all visdom, kunnskapsrike, og som forsto vitenskap, og som hadde evne til å tjene i kongens palass; og at han skulle lære dem kaldeernes lærdom og språk.

youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king's palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.

Kongen bestemte at de skulle få en daglig porsjon av kongens delikatesser, og av vinen han drakk, slik at de kunne bli oppfostret i tre år; ved slutten av denne tiden skulle de stå framfor kongen.

The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king's dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at the end of it they should stand before the king.

Blant dem var Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja, av Judas barn.

Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

Lederen for hoffmennene ga dem nye navn: til Daniel ga han navnet Beltesassar; til Hananja, Sjadrak; til Misjael, Mesjak; og til Asarja, Abed-Nego.

The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave [the name of] Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, [of] Shadrach; and to Mishael, [of] Meshach; and to Azariah, [of] Abednego.

Men Daniel bestemte seg for i sitt hjerte at han ikke ville gjøre seg uren med kongens delikatesser eller med vinen han drakk. Derfor ba han lederen for hoffmennene om at han ikke måtte bli uren.

But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Gud lot Daniel finne velvilje og medfølelse hos lederen for hoffmennene.

Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.

Lederen for hoffmennene sa til Daniel: Jeg frykter min herre kongen, som har bestemt deres mat og drikke, for hvorfor skulle han se deres ansikter være dårligere enn de unge mennene som er på samme alder? Dere ville sette mitt hode i fare hos kongen.

The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.

Da sa Daniel til forvalteren, som lederen for hoffmennene hadde satt over Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja:

Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Prøv dine tjenere, jeg ber deg, i ti dager; la dem gi oss grønnsaker å spise og vann å drikke.

Prove your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

La så våre ansikter bli sett av deg, og ansiktene til de unge mennene som spiser av kongens delikatesser; og slik du ser, gjør med dine tjenere.

Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king's dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.

Så lyttet han til dem i denne saken og prøvde dem i ti dager.

So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

Ved slutten av ti dager så deres ansikter bedre ut, og de var fetere i kjøttet enn alle de unge mennene som spiste av kongens delikatesser.

At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king's dainties.

Derfor tok forvalteren bort deres delikatesser og vinen de skulle drikke, og ga dem grønnsaker.

So the steward took away their dainties, and the wine that they should drink, and gave them pulse.

Gud ga de fire unge mennene kunnskap og ferdigheter i all lærdom og visdom; og Daniel hadde forståelse av alle syner og drømmer.

Now as for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Ved slutten av dagene som kongen hadde fastsatt for å føre dem inn, førte lederen for hoffmennene dem framfor Nebukadnesar.

At the end of the days which the king had appointed for bringing them in, the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

Kongen samtalte med dem, og blant alle ble det ikke funnet noen som Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja; derfor sto de framfor kongen.

The king talked with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

I enhver sak av visdom og forståelse, som kongen spurte dem om, fant han dem ti ganger bedre enn alle trollmennene og spåmennene som var i hele riket.

In every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters who were in all his realm.

Daniel fortsatte helt til det første året av kong Kyros.

Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.
