Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.

Det har vært godt for meg å vise de tegn og under som Den Høyeste Gud har gjort mot meg.

It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me.

Hvor store er hans tegn! Og hvor mektige er hans under! Hans rike er et evig rike, og hans herredømme varer fra generasjon til generasjon.

How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

Jeg, Nebukadnesar, hadde fred i mitt hus og trivdes i mitt palass.

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.

Jeg så en drøm som gjorde meg redd, og tankene på min seng og synene i mitt hode forstyrret meg.

I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

Derfor ga jeg en befaling om å føre alle de vise i Babylon fram for meg, så de kunne fortelle meg tydningen av drømmen.

Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

Så kom magikerne, åndemanerne, kaldeerne og varslerne inn, og jeg fortalte drømmen til dem, men de kunne ikke gi meg tydningen.

Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation of it.

Til sist kom Daniel inn foran meg, han som heter Beltsasar, etter navnet til min gud, og i ham er de hellige gudenes ånd. Jeg fortalte drømmen til ham og sa,

But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, [saying],

Beltsasar, leder for magikerne, fordi jeg vet at de hellige gudenes ånd er i deg, og ingen hemmelighet forvirrer deg, så fortell meg drømmens syner som jeg har sett, og dens tydning.

Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation of it.

Dette var synene i mitt hode mens jeg lå på sengen: Jeg så, og se, et tre midt på jorden, og høyden var stor.

Thus were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and, behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and the height of it was great.

Treet vokste og ble sterkt, høyden nådde himmelen, og det var synlig til jordens ende.

The tree grew, and was strong, and the height of it reached to the sky, and the sight of it to the end of all the earth.

Løvet på det var vakkert, frukten var rikelig, og i det var det mat for alle: Dyrene på marken fant skygge under det, og himmelens fugler bodde i grenene, og alt levende ble næret fra det.

The leaves of it were beautiful, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all: the animals of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the sky lived in the branches of it, and all flesh was fed from it.

Jeg så i synet i mitt hode på sengen, og se, en våker og en hellig steg ned fra himmelen.

I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from the sky.

Han ropte høyt og sa: Hogg ned treet, og kutt av grenene, rist av løvet, og spre frukten: La dyrene flykte fra undersiden av det, og fuglene fra grenene.

He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the animals get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches.

Men la stubbens rot være i jorden, med et bånd av jern og kobber i det ømme gresset på marken; la den fuktes av himmelens dugg, og la hans del være med dyrene på jordens gress.

Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth:

La hans hjerte endres fra menneskets, og la et dyrehjerte gis til ham; og la syv tider gå over ham.

let his heart be changed from man's, and let a animal's heart be given to him; and let seven times pass over him.

Den avgjørelsen er ved de våkernes befal, og forlangende ved de helliges ord; for at de levende skal vite at Den Høyeste hersker i menneskenes rike, og gir det til hvem han vil, og setter opp det laveste blant mennesker.

The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men.

Denne drømmen har jeg, kong Nebukadnesar, sett; og du, Beltsasar, forklar tydningen, for alle de vise menn i mitt rike kan ikke gi meg tydningen, men du kan; for de hellige gudenes ånd er i deg.

This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

Da ble Daniel, som heter Beltsasar, stum en stund, og tankene bekymret ham. Kongen sa: Beltsasar, la ikke drømmen eller tydningen forstyrre deg. Beltsasar svarte: Herre, la drømmen være for dem som hater deg, og tydningen for dine fiender.

Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, Belteshazzar, don't let the dream, or the interpretation, trouble you. Belteshazzar answered, My lord, the dream be to those who hate you, and the interpretation of it to your adversaries.

Treet som du så, som vokste og ble så sterkt, hvis høyde nådde himmelen og det var synlig til hele jorden,

The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the sky, and the sight of it to all the earth;

hvis løv var vakkert og frukten rikelig, og der var mat for alle; under det bodde dyrene på marken, og i grenene hadde himmelens fugler sin bolig:

whose leaves were beautiful, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation:

det er du, konge, som har vokst og blitt sterk; for din storhet har vokst og nådd himmelen, og ditt herredømme til jordens ende.

it is you, O king, that are grown and become strong; for your greatness is grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth.

Da kongen så en våker, en hellig, stige ned fra himmelen og si: Hogg ned treet og ødelegg det; men la stubbens rot være i jorden, med et bånd av jern og kobber i det ømme gresset på marken, og la den fuktes av himmelens dugg, og la hans del være med dyrene på marken inntil syv tider går over ham;

Whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from the sky, and saying, Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots of it in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him;

dette er tydningen, konge, og det er Den Høyestes befaling, som skal komme over min herre kongen:

this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come on my lord the king:

at du skal drives bort fra menneskene, og din bolig skal være med dyrene på marken, og du skal spise gress som økser, og bli fuktet av himmelens dugg, og syv tider skal gå over deg, inntil du vet at Den Høyeste hersker i menneskenes rike, og gir det til hvem han vil.

that you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field, and you shall be made to eat grass as oxen, and shall be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will.

Whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; your kingdom shall be sure to you, after that you shall have known that the heavens do rule.

Konge, la derfor mitt råd være til behag for deg, bryt med dine synder ved rettferdighet, og dine misgjerninger ved barmhjertighet mot de fattige; så din ro kan bli forlenget.

Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of your tranquillity.

Alt dette skjedde med kong Nebukadnesar.

All this came on the king Nebuchadnezzar.

Ved slutten av tolv måneder gikk han omkring på kongepalasset i Babylon.

At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon.

Kongen snakket og sa: Er ikke dette det store Babylon, som jeg har bygget til et kongelig hus, ved min makts styrke og til min herlighets ære?

The king spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?

Mens ordet ennå var i kongens munn, falt det en røst fra himmelen som sa: Kong Nebukadnesar, til deg er det sagt: Riket er tatt fra deg.

While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from the sky, [saying], O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from you:

Du skal drives bort fra menneskene; din bolig skal være med dyrene på marken; du skal spise gress som økser; og syv tider skal gå over deg, inntil du vet at Den Høyeste hersker i menneskenes rike, og gir det til hvem han vil.

and you shall be driven from men; and they dwelling shall be with the animals of the field; you shall be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will.

Samme stund ble ordet oppfylt over Nebukadnesar: Han ble drevet bort fra menneskene og spiste gress som økser, og hans kropp ble fuktet av himmelens dugg, inntil hans hår vokste som ørnefjær, og hans negler som fugleklør.

The same hour was the thing fulfilled on Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until his hair was grown like eagles' [feathers], and his nails like birds' [claws].

At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.

Alle som bor på jorden er som ingenting regnet; og han gjør som han vil med himmelens hær og blant jordens innbyggere; ingen kan stoppe hans hånd eller si til ham: Hva gjør du?

All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or tell him, What do you?

På samme tid vendte min forstand tilbake til meg; og for mitt rikes herlighet, vendte min majestet og ære tilbake til meg; mine rådgivere og adelsmenn søkte meg, og jeg ble styrket i mitt rike, og storheten ble lagt til meg.

At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me; and my counselors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me.

Nå priser, ophøyer og ærer jeg, Nebukadnesar, himmelens Konge; for alle hans gjerninger er sanne, og hans veier er rettferdige; og de som vandrer i stolthet kan han ydmyke.

Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.
