Når du drar i krig mot dine fiender og ser hester og vogner og et folk større enn deg, skal du ikke frykte dem, for Herren din Gud er med deg, han som førte deg opp fra landet Egypt.

When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, [and] a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

Når dere nærmer dere til kamp, skal presten tre fram og tale til folket.

It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people,

Han skal si til dem: Hør Israel, i dag trekker dere ut i kamp mot fiendene deres. La ikke hjertet bli motløst, vær ikke redd, skjelv ikke og frykt dem ikke.

and shall tell them, Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: don't let your heart faint; don't be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;

For Herren deres Gud går med dere, for å kjempe for dere mot fiendene og gi dere seier.

for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Offiserene skal tale til folket og si: Er det noen som har bygd et nytt hus og ikke innviet det? La ham dra hjem igjen, for at han ikke skal dø i slaget, og en annen innvier det.

The officers shall speak to the people, saying, What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

Er det noen som har plantet en vingård og ikke høstet dens frukter? La ham dra hjem igjen, for at han ikke skal dø i slaget, og en annen høster fruktene.

What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used the fruit of it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use the fruit of it.

Er det noen som har forlovet seg med en kvinne og ikke tatt henne til seg? La ham dra hjem igjen, for at han ikke skal dø i slaget, og en annen tar henne.

What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.

Offiserene skal også tale til folket og si: Er det noen som er redd og motløs? La ham dra hjem igjen, for at han ikke skal gjøre sine brødres hjerte like motløst som sitt eget.

The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return to his house, lest his brother's heart melt as his heart.

Når offiserene har avsluttet sin tale til folket, skal de sette hærførere til å lede folket.

It shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.

Når du nærmer deg en by for å angripe den, skal du først tilby fred.

When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

Hvis de svarer deg med fred og åpner portene for deg, da skal hele folket i byen bli dine tjenere og tjene deg.

It shall be, if it make you answer of peace, and open to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become tributary to you, and shall serve you.

Men hvis de ikke vil ha fred med deg, men velger krig, skal du beleire byen.

If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:

Når Herren din Gud overgir byen til deg, skal du slå alle mennene med sverd.

and when Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword:

Men kvinnene, barna, buskapen og alt som er i byen, alt byttet, skal du ta som ditt eget, og du skal nyte byttet fra dine fiender, som Herren din Gud har gitt deg.

but the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil of it, shall you take for a prey to yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you.

Slik skal du gjøre med alle byene som er svært langt borte fra deg, som ikke tilhører disse nasjonene.

Thus shall you do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

Men i byene til disse folkene, som Herren din Gud gir deg som arv, skal du ikke la noe som puster bli i live.

But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes;

Fullstendig skal du utslette dem: Hetittene, amorittene, kanaaneerne, perisittene, hivittene og jebusittene, slik Herren din Gud har befalt deg.

but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you;

For at de ikke skal lære dere å gjøre alle deres avskyeligheter som de gjør for sine guder, og således få dere til å synde mot Herren deres Gud.

that they not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God.

Når du beleirer en by i lang tid og kjemper mot den for å innta den, skal du ikke ødelegge trærne ved å svinge øksen mot dem; for du kan spise av dem. Du skal ikke hugge dem ned; for er markens trær mennesker som kan beleires?

When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy the trees of it by wielding an axe against them; for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged of you?

Kun trær som du vet ikke er tre til mat, skal du ødelegge og hugge ned, for å bygge stillinger mot byen som er i krig med deg, inntil den faller.

Only the trees of which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it fall.
