Når Herren din Gud fører deg inn i det landet hvor du skal erobre det, og driver ut mange folkeslag foran deg, hetittene, girgasittene, amorittene, kanaanittene, perisittene, hivittene og jebusittene, sju folkeslag større og mektigere enn deg;

When Yahweh your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you;

og når Herren din Gud overgir dem til deg, og du slår dem, skal du fullstendig utslette dem: du skal ikke inngå noen pakt med dem, og ikke vise dem nåde;

and when Yahweh your God shall deliver them up before you, and you shall strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them: you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them;

heller ikke skal du inngå ekteskap med dem; din datter skal du ikke gi til hans sønn, og hans datter skal du ikke ta til din sønn.

neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give to his son, nor his daughter shall you take to your son.

For han vil vende din sønn bort fra å følge meg, slik at de kan tjene andre guder: da vil Herrens vrede flamme opp mot deg, og han vil raskt ødelegge deg.

For he will turn away your son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of Yahweh be kindled against you, and he will destroy you quickly.

Slik skal du behandle dem: du skal rive ned deres altere, knuse deres steinstøtter, hogge ned deres Ashera-påler, og brenne deres utskårne bilder med ild.

But thus shall you deal with them: you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire.

For du er et hellig folk for Herren din Gud: Herren din Gud har utvalgt deg til å være et folk som tilhører ham, over alle folkene som er på jordens overflate.

For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God: Yahweh your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth.

Herren satte ikke sin kjærlighet til deg, heller ikke utvalgte han deg fordi dere var flere enn noe annet folk; for dere var de få av alle folk;

Yahweh didn't set his love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples:

men fordi Herren elsker dere, og fordi han ville holde den ed han sverget til deres fedre, førte Herren deg ut med sterk hånd og løste deg fra slavehuset, fra hånden til Farao, kongen av Egypt.

but because Yahweh loves you, and because he would keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, has Yahweh brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Så vit da at Herren din Gud, han er Gud, den trofaste Gud, som holder pakten og miskunnen mot dem som elsker ham og holder hans bud i tusen generasjoner,

Know therefore that Yahweh your God, he is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with them who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations,

og som gjengjelder dem som hater ham åpenlyst, for å ødelegge dem: han vil ikke trekke det tilbake fra dem som hater ham, men gjengjelder dem åpenlyst.

and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him who hates him, he will repay him to his face.

Du skal derfor holde budet, forskriftene og lovene som jeg gir deg i dag, så du gjør dem.

You shall therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you this day, to do them.

Det skal skje, hvis du hører etter disse lovene, og holder og gjør dem, at Herren din Gud vil holde pakten og miskunnen med deg, som han sverget til dine fedre:

It shall happen, because you listen to these ordinances, and keep and do them, that Yahweh your God will keep with you the covenant and the loving kindness which he swore to your fathers:

og han vil elske deg, velsigne deg og la dere bli mange; han vil også velsigne livsfrukten din og markens frukt, kornet ditt, din nye vin og din olje, avkommet av dine storfe og ungen av din flokk, i det landet som han sverget å gi til dine fedre.

and he will love you, and bless you, and multiply you; he will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock, in the land which he swore to your fathers to give you.

Du skal være velsignet over alle folk: det skal ikke være noen barnløs, verken blant dere eller blant deres husdyr.

You shall be blessed above all peoples: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

Herren vil fjerne all sykdom fra deg; og ingen av de onde sykdommene fra Egypt, som du kjenner til, vil han legge på deg, men legge dem på alle dem som hater deg.

Yahweh will take away from you all sickness; and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you know, will he put on you, but will lay them on all those who hate you.

Du skal fortære alle de folk som Herren din Gud overgir til deg; ditt øye skal ikke vise medfølelse med dem: heller ikke skal du tjene deres guder; for det vil være en felle for deg.

You shall consume all the peoples who Yahweh your God shall deliver to you; your eye shall not pity them: neither shall you serve their gods; for that will be a snare to you.

Hvis du sier i ditt hjerte, Disse folk er flere enn meg; hvordan kan jeg drive dem bort?

If you shall say in your heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?

du skal ikke frykte dem: du skal huske godt på hva Herren din Gud gjorde med Farao og med hele Egypt;

you shall not be afraid of them: you shall well remember what Yahweh your God did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt;

de store prøvelsene som dine øyne så, og tegnene, undrene, den sterke hånden og den utstrakte armen som Herren din Gud førte deg ut med: slik skal Herren din Gud gjøre med alle de folkene som du frykter.

the great trials which your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which Yahweh your God brought you out: so shall Yahweh your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

Dessuten vil Herren din Gud sende skremmeveggen blant dem, inntil de som er igjen, og som gjemmer seg, går til grunne foran deg.

Moreover Yahweh your God will send the hornet among them, until those who are left, and hide themselves, perish from before you.

Du skal ikke frykte dem; for Herren din Gud er midt iblant deg, en stor og fryktinngytende Gud.

You shall not be scared of them; for Yahweh your God is in the midst of you, a great and awesome God.

Herren din Gud vil drive ut disse folkene for deg litt etter litt: du kan ikke utslette dem alle på en gang, for da kan de ville dyrene bli for mange og truende for deg.

Yahweh your God will cast out those nations before you by little and little: you may not consume them at once, lest the animals of the field increase on you.

Men Herren din Gud vil overgi dem til deg, og vil forvirre dem med en stor forvirring inntil de blir ødelagt.

But Yahweh your God will deliver them up before you, and will confuse them with a great confusion, until they be destroyed.

Han vil overgi deres konger i din hånd, og du skal gjøre deres navn til intet under himmelen: ingen mann skal kunne stå foran deg, inntil du har ødelagt dem.

He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name to perish from under the sky: there shall no man be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them.

De utskårne bilder av deres guder skal du brenne med ild: du skal ikke begjære sølvet eller gullet som er på dem, heller ikke ta det til deg, for at du ikke skal snare deg med det; for det er en styggedom for Herren din Gud.

The engraved images of their gods shall you burn with fire: you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it to you, lest you be snared therein; for it is an abomination to Yahweh your God.

Du skal ikke bringe en styggedom inn i ditt hus, for at du ikke skal bli viet til tilintetgjørelse som den: du skal fullstendig avsky den, og du skal fullstendig hate den; for den er viet til tilintetgjørelse.

You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and become a devoted thing like it: you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.
