1 I den tredje måneden etter at Israels barn hadde dratt ut av landet Egypt, kom de samme dagen inn i Sinai-ørkenen.

In the third month after the children of Israel had gone forth out of the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

2 Da de forlot Rephidim og kom til Sinai-ørkenen, slo de leir i ørkenen, og Israel slo leir foran fjellet.

When they had departed from Rephidim, and had come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and there Israel encamped before the mountain.

3 Moses gikk opp til Gud, og Herren ropte til ham fra fjellet og sa: "Dette skal du si til Jakobs hus og fortelle Israels barn:

Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him out of the mountain, saying, "This is what you shall tell the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel:

4 'Dere har sett hva jeg gjorde med egypterne, og hvordan jeg bar dere på ørnevinger og førte dere til meg selv.

'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself.

5 Så hvis dere virkelig hører på min røst og holder min pakt, skal dere være min eiendom av alle folkeslag; for hele jorden er min.

Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine;

6 Og dere skal være for meg et kongerike av prester og et hellig folk.' Dette er ordene du skal tale til Israels barn."

and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation.' These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel."

7 Moses kom og kalte sammen folkets eldste og la fram for dem alle disse ordene som Herren hadde pålagt ham.

Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which Yahweh commanded him.

8 Hele folket svarte i kor og sa: "Alt det Herren har talt vil vi gjøre." Moses brakte folkets ord tilbake til Herren.

All the people answered together, and said, "All that Yahweh has spoken we will do." Moses reported the words of the people to Yahweh.

9 Herren sa til Moses: "Se, jeg kommer til deg i en tykk sky, så folket kan høre når jeg taler med deg og alltid tro på deg." Moses fortalte folkets ord til Herren.

Yahweh said to Moses, "Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever." Moses told the words of the people to Yahweh.

10 Herren sa til Moses: "Gå til folket og helliggjør dem i dag og i morgen, og la dem vaske sine klær.

Yahweh said to Moses, "Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments,

11 Og vær klare til den tredje dagen, for på den tredje dagen vil Herren stige ned på Sinai-fjellet i alles påsyn.

and be ready against the third day; for on the third day Yahweh will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.

12 Du skal sette grenser for folket rundt omkring og si: 'Vokt dere så dere ikke går opp på fjellet eller rører ved dets grense. Den som rører ved fjellet skal sannelig dø.

You shall set bounds to the people round about, saying, 'Be careful that you don't go up onto the mountain, or touch its border. Whoever touches the mountain shall be surely put to death.

13 Ingen hånd skal røre ham, men han skal bli steinet eller skutt; enten det er et menneske eller et dyr, skal han ikke leve.' Når hornet lyder lenge, skal de gå opp til fjellet."

No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is animal or man, he shall not live.' When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain."

14 Moses gikk ned fra fjellet til folket og helliggjorde dem, og de vasket sine klær.

Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

15 Han sa til folket: "Vær klare til den tredje dagen. Ha ikke seksuelle relasjoner med en kvinne."

He said to the people, "Be ready by the third day. Don't have sexual relations with a woman."

16 Det skjedde på den tredje dagen, om morgenen, at det var torden og lyn og en tykk sky på fjellet, og lyden av et svært høyt horn; og hele folket i leiren skalv.

It happened on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.

17 Moses førte folket ut av leiren for å møte Gud, og de stod ved foten av fjellet.

Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lower part of the mountain.

18 Hele Sinai-fjellet røykte, fordi Herren steg ned på det i ild; og røyken steg opp som røken fra en ovn, og hele fjellet skalv meget.

Mount Sinai, the whole of it, smoked, because Yahweh descended on it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.

19 Da lyden av hornet vokste sterkere og sterkere, talte Moses, og Gud svarte ham med en stemme.

When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.

20 Herren steg ned på Sinai-fjellet, til toppen av fjellet. Herren kalte Moses til toppen av fjellet, og Moses gikk opp.

Yahweh came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. Yahweh called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

21 Herren sa til Moses: "Gå ned og advar folket, så de ikke bryter gjennom til Herren for å se, for da vil mange av dem omkomme.

Yahweh said to Moses, "Go down, charge the people, lest they break through to Yahweh to gaze, and many of them perish.

22 La også prestene, som nærmer seg Herren, helliggjøre seg, så ikke Herren bryter ut mot dem."

Let the priests also, who come near to Yahweh, sanctify themselves, lest Yahweh break forth on them."

23 Moses sa til Herren: "Folket kan ikke gå opp til Sinai-fjellet, for du påla oss å sette grenser rundt fjellet og helliggjøre det."

Moses said to Yahweh, "The people can't come up to Mount Sinai, for you charged us, saying, 'Set bounds around the mountain, and sanctify it.'"

24 Herren sa til ham: "Gå ned, og ta med deg Aron, men la ikke prestene og folket bryte gjennom for å komme opp til Herren, ellers bryter han ut mot dem."

Yahweh said to him, "Go down and you shall bring Aaron up with you, but don't let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahweh, lest he break forth on them."

25 Så Moses gikk ned til folket og fortalte dem det.

So Moses went down to the people, and told them.
