1 Nå gikk Moses og voktet sauene til Jetro, sin svigerfar, presten i Midjan. Han førte flokken bak villmarken og kom til Guds fjell, Horeb.

Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the back of the wilderness, and came to God's mountain, to Horeb.

2 Herrens engel viste seg for ham i en flammende ild i en tornebusk. Han så, og se, tornebusken brant, men den ble ikke fortært.

The angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

3 Moses sa, "Jeg må gå bort og se på dette underet, hvorfor tornebusken ikke blir brent opp."

Moses said, I will turn aside now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 Da Herren så at han kom bort for å se, ropte Gud til ham fra tornebusken og sa: "Moses! Moses!" Han svarte: "Her er jeg."

When Yahweh saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, "Moses! Moses!" He said, "Here I am."

5 Han sa: "Kom ikke nærmere. Ta sandalene av føttene dine, for stedet du står på, er hellig grunn."

He said, "Don't come close. Take off your sandals from off your feet, for the place you are standing on is holy ground."

6 Videre sa han: "Jeg er din fars Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud." Da skjulte Moses ansiktet, for han var redd for å se på Gud.

Moreover he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look at God.

7 Herren sa: "Jeg har sannelig sett mitt folks lidelse i Egypt og hørt deres rop på grunn av deres slavefogder, for jeg kjenner deres smerte.

Yahweh said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

8 Jeg er kommet ned for å utfri dem fra egypternes hånd og føre dem opp fra det landet til et godt og stort land, et land som flyter med melk og honning, til stedet der kanaaneerne, hetittene, amorittene, perisittene, hevittene og jebusittene bor.

I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

9 Se, Israels barns rop har nådd meg, og jeg har også sett undertrykkelsen egypterne påfører dem.

Now, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me. Moreover I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

10 Derfor, kom nå, så vil jeg sende deg til farao, for at du skal føre mitt folk, Israels barn, ut av Egypt."

Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring forth my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt."

11 Moses sa til Gud: "Hvem er jeg, at jeg skulle gå til farao og føre Israels barn ut av Egypt?"

Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?"

12 Han sa: "Sannelig, jeg vil være med deg. Dette skal være tegnet på at jeg har sendt deg: Når du har ført folket ut av Egypt, skal dere tjene Gud på dette fjellet."

He said, "Certainly I will be with you. This will be the token to you, that I have sent you: when you have brought forth the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain."

13 Moses sa til Gud: "Se, når jeg kommer til Israels barn og sier til dem: 'Deres fedres Gud har sendt meg til dere,' og de spør meg: 'Hva er hans navn?' Hva skal jeg da si til dem?"

Moses said to God, "Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and tell them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you;' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' What should I tell them?"

14 Gud sa til Moses: "JEG ER DEN JEG ER," og han sa, "Du skal si til Israels barn: 'JEG ER har sendt meg til dere.'"

God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM," and he said, "You shall tell the children of Israel this: "I AM has sent me to you."

15 Gud sa videre til Moses: "Du skal si til Israels barn: 'Herren, deres fedres Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud, har sendt meg til dere.' Dette er mitt navn til evig tid, og således skal jeg minnes fra slekt til slekt.

God said moreover to Moses, "You shall tell the children of Israel this, 'Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.

16 Gå, samle Israels eldste og si til dem: 'Herren, deres fedres Gud, Abrahams, Isaks og Jakobs Gud, har vist seg for meg og sagt: Jeg har sannelig sett dere og hva som er blitt gjort mot dere i Egypt.

Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and tell them, 'Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, "I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt;

17 Og jeg har sagt: Jeg vil føre dere opp fra Egypts lidelse til kanaaneernes, hetittenes, amorittenes, perisittenes, hevittenes og jebusittenes land, et land som flyter med melk og honning.'"

and I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey."'

18 De vil høre på stemmen din, og du skal gå, du og Israels eldste, til Egypterkongen og si til ham, 'Herren, hebreernes Gud, har møtt oss. La oss nå få dra tre dagsreiser ut i ørkenen, så vi kan ofre til Herren, vår Gud.'

They will listen to your voice, and you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and you shall tell him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to Yahweh, our God.'

19 Jeg vet at Egypterkongen ikke vil gi dere lov til å dra, med mindre en sterk hånd tvinger ham.

I know that the king of Egypt won't give you permission to go, no, not by a mighty hand.

20 Derfor vil jeg rekke ut min hånd og slå Egypt med alle mine under, som jeg vil gjøre midt i det, og etter det vil han la dere gå.

I will put forth my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst of it, and after that he will let you go.

21 Jeg vil gi dette folket velvilje i egypternes øyne, og når dere drar, skal dere ikke gå tomhendt.

I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and it will happen that when you go, you shall not go empty-handed.

22 Hver kvinne skal be sin nabo og henne som bor i hennes hus, om smykker av sølv, smykker av gull og klær; og dere skal sette dem på sønnene og døtrene deres. Slik skal dere plyndre egypterne."

But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, and of her who visits her house, jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons, and on your daughters. You shall despoil the Egyptians.
