1 Hele jorden hadde ett språk og felles ord.

The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

2 Da de dro østover, fant de en slette i landet Sinear og bosatte seg der.

It happened, as they traveled east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they lived there.

3 De sa til hverandre: "Kom, la oss lage teglstein og brenne dem godt." De brukte tegl som stein, og bitumen som mørtel.

They said one to another, "Come, let's make brick, and burn them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

4 De sa: "Kom, la oss bygge en by med et tårn som rekker opp til himmelen, så vi kan gjøre oss et navn, ellers blir vi spredt ut over hele jorden."

They said, "Come, let's build us a city, and a tower, whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth."

5 Herren kom ned for å se på byen og tårnet som menneskene bygget.

Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.

6 Herren sa: "Se, de er ett folk, og de har alle ett språk; og dette er bare begynnelsen på det de gjør. Nå vil ingenting være umulig for dem, hva de enn tenker å gjøre.

Yahweh said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.

7 Kom, la oss gå ned og forvirre deres språk, så de ikke forstår hverandres tale."

Come, let's go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."

8 Så spredte Herren dem derfra ut over hele jorden, og de sluttet å bygge byen.

So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.

9 Derfor kalte de stedet Babel, fordi Herren der forvirret språket på hele jorden. Derfra spredte Herren dem ut over hele jorden.

Therefore the name of it was called Babel, because Yahweh confused the language of all the earth, there. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.

10 Dette er historien om Sems slekt. Sem var hundre år gammel da han ble far til Arpaksjad to år etter flommen.

28 Haran døde før sin far Tarah i landet hvor han var født, i Ur i Kaldea.

Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees.

29 Abram og Nahor tok seg koner. Abrams kone het Sarai, og Nahors kone het Milka, datter av Haran som også var far til Jiska.

Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran who was also the father of Iscah.

30 Sarai var ufruktbar. Hun hadde ingen barn.

Sarai was barren. She had no child.

31 Tarah tok med seg Abram, sin sønn, Lot, sønn av Haran, sitt barnebarn, og Sarai, sin svigerdatter, Abrams kone. De dro sammen fra Ur i Kaldea for å dra til Kanaans land. De kom til Haran og slo seg ned der.

Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife. They went forth from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran, and lived there.

32 Tarah levde i to hundre og fem år. Tarah døde i Haran.

The days of Terah were two hundred five years. Terah died in Haran.
