1 Da Abram var nittini år gammel, viste Herren seg for ham og sa: «Jeg er Gud den Allmektige. Vandre for meg og vær skyldfri.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am God Almighty. Walk before me, and be blameless.

2 Jeg vil opprette min pakt mellom meg og deg og gjøre deg umåtelig tallrik.»

I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly."

3 Abram falt på sitt ansikt. Gud talte til ham og sa:

Abram fell on his face. God talked with him, saying,

4 «Når det gjelder meg, ser du, min pakt er med deg. Du skal bli far til mange folkeslag.

"As for me, behold, my covenant is with you. You will be the father of a multitude of nations.

5 Du skal ikke lenger hete Abram, men ditt navn skal være Abraham, for jeg har gjort deg til far for mange folkeslag.

Neither will your name any more be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made you.

6 Jeg vil gjøre deg overmåte fruktbar og gjøre nasjoner av deg. Konger skal komme fra deg.

I will make you exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of you. Kings will come out of you.

7 Jeg vil opprette min pakt mellom meg og deg og dine etterkommere gjennom deres generasjoner som en evig pakt, til å være en Gud for deg og for dine etterkommere.

I will establish my covenant between me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you and to your seed after you.

8 Jeg vil gi deg og dine etterkommere det landet du reiser i, hele Kanaan, som en evig eiendom. Jeg vil være deres Gud.»

I will give to you, and to your seed after you, the land where you are traveling, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. I will be their God."

9 Gud sa til Abraham: «Du skal holde min pakt, du og dine etterkommere gjennom deres generasjoner.

God said to Abraham, "As for you, you will keep my covenant, you and your seed after you throughout their generations.

10 Dette er min pakt som dere skal holde, mellom meg og deg og dine etterkommere: Hver mann blant dere skal omskjæres.

This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your seed after you. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

11 Dere skal bli omskåret i forhudens kjøtt. Det skal være et tegn på pakten mellom meg og deg.

You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin. It will be a token of a covenant between me and you.

12 Den som er åtte dager gammel skal omskjæres blant dere, hver mann i deres generasjoner, enten han er født i huset eller kjøpt for penger fra en fremmed som ikke er av din ætt.

He who is eight days old will be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he who is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner who is not of your seed.

13 Den som er født i ditt hus og den som er kjøpt med dine penger, skal omskjæres. Min pakt skal være i deres kjøtt som en evig pakt.

He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with your money, must be circumcised. My covenant will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14 Den uomskårne mann som ikke er omskåret i forhudens kjøtt, han skal bli utryddet fra sitt folk. Han har brutt min pakt.»

The uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people. He has broken my covenant."

15 Gud sa til Abraham: «Når det gjelder Sarai, din kone, skal du ikke kalle henne Sarai, men hennes navn skal være Sara.

God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah.

16 Jeg vil velsigne henne, og dessuten gi deg en sønn med henne. Ja, jeg vil velsigne henne, og hun skal bli mor til mange folkeslag. Konger over folkeslag skal komme fra henne.»

I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her."

17 Da falt Abraham på sitt ansikt og lo, og sa i sitt hjerte: «Skal et barn bli født av en hundre år gammel mann? Skal Sara, som er nitti år gammel, føde?

Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?"

18 Abraham sa til Gud: «Å, måtte Ismael leve for deg!»

Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!"

19 Gud sa: «Nei, men Sara, din kone, skal føde deg en sønn. Du skal kalle ham Isak. Jeg vil opprette min pakt med ham som en evig pakt for hans etterkommere etter ham.

God said, "No, but Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You shall call his name Isaac.{Isaac means "he laughs."} I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him.

20 Når det gjelder Ismael, har jeg hørt deg. Se, jeg har velsignet ham og vil gjøre ham fruktbar og gjøre ham til en stor nasjon. Han skal bli far til tolv fyrster.

As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

21 Men min pakt oppretter jeg med Isak, som Sara skal føde for deg på denne tid neste år.»

But my covenant I establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time in the next year."

22 Da han var ferdig med å tale med ham, steg Gud opp fra Abraham.

When he finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

23 Abraham tok sin sønn Ismael, alle som var født i hans hus, og alle som var kjøpt med hans penger, hver mann i Abrahams hus, og omskar forhudens kjøtt samme dag som Gud hadde sagt til ham.

Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his money; every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the same day, as God had said to him.

24 Abraham var nittini år gammel da han ble omskåret i forhudens kjøtt.

Abraham was ninety-nine years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

25 Ismael, hans sønn, var tretten år gammel da han ble omskåret i forhudens kjøtt.

Ishmael, his son, was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

26 Samme dag ble både Abraham og Ismael, hans sønn, omskåret.

In the same day both Abraham and Ishmael, his son, were circumcised.

27 Alle mennene i huset hans, både de som var født der og de som var kjøpt med penger fra en fremmed, ble omskåret med ham.

All the men of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money of a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
