1 Isak kalte Jakob til seg, velsignet ham og befalte ham: «Du skal ikke ta deg en kone av Kanaans døtre.

Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

2 Gå til Paddan-Aram, til huset til Betuel, din mors far. Ta deg en kone derfra, fra døtrene til Laban, din mors bror.

Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

3 Må Gud Den Allmektige velsigne deg, gjøre deg fruktbar og tallrik, så du blir til en mengde folk,

May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples,

4 og gi deg Abrahams velsignelse, til deg og til din etterkommere, så du kan ta i eie det landet hvor du ferdes, som Gud ga til Abraham.»

and give you the blessing of Abraham, to you, and to your seed with you, that you may inherit the land where you travel, which God gave to Abraham."

5 Isak sendte Jakob av sted, og han dro til Paddan-Aram, til Laban, sønn av Betuel, arameeren, Rebekkas bror, Jakobs og Esaus mor.

Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Paddan Aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, Rebekah's brother, Jacob's and Esau's mother.

6 Esau så at Isak hadde velsignet Jakob og sendt ham til Paddan-Aram for å ta seg en kone derfra, og at han ved velsignelsen hadde pålagt ham å ikke ta en kone av Kanaans døtre.

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, "You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan,"

7 Og Jakob hadde lyttet til sin far og mor og dro til Paddan-Aram.

and that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan Aram.

8 Esau så at Kanaans døtre ikke behaget Isak, hans far.

Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan didn't please Isaac, his father.

9 Da dro Esau til Ismael, og tok Mahalath, datter av Ismael, Abrahams sønn, Nebajots søster, til kone, i tillegg til de konene han allerede hadde.

Esau went to Ishmael, and took, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

10 Jakob dro fra Beersheba og dro mot Haran.

Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

11 Han kom til et sted, ble der natten over siden solen hadde gått ned. Han tok en av steinene på stedet, la den under hodet og sovnet på det stedet.

He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

12 Han drømte, og se, en stige var reist på jorden, med toppen som nådde himmelen. Og Guds engler steg opp og ned på den.

He dreamed. Behold, a stairway set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

13 Se, Herren sto over den og sa: «Jeg er Herren, Abrahams Gud og Isaks Gud. Landet du ligger på vil jeg gi deg og dine etterkommere.

Behold, Yahweh stood above it, and said, "I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The land whereon you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed.

14 Dine etterkommere skal være som støvet på jorden; du skal bre deg ut mot vest og øst, mot nord og syd. I deg og i dine etterkommere skal alle slekter på jorden bli velsignet.

Your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south. In you and in your seed will all the families of the earth be blessed.

15 Se, jeg er med deg og vil bevare deg hvor du enn går, og jeg skal føre deg tilbake til dette landet. Jeg forlater deg ikke før jeg har gjort det jeg har lovet deg.»

Behold, I am with you, and will keep you, wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken of to you."

16 Jakob våknet opp av søvnen og sa: «Herren er visselig på dette stedet, og jeg visste det ikke.»

Jacob awakened out of his sleep, and he said, "Surely Yahweh is in this place, and I didn't know it."

17 Han ble grepet av frykt og sa: «Hvor fryktinngytende er ikke dette stedet! Dette er ikke noe mindre enn Guds hus, og dette er himmelens port.»

He was afraid, and said, "How dreadful is this place! This is none other than God's house, and this is the gate of heaven."

18 Tidlig om morgenen reiste Jakob seg, tok steinen han hadde hatt under hodet, reiste den opp som en minnestein og helte olje over den.

Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it.

19 Han kalte stedet Betel, men byens navn var tidligere Luz.

He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.

20 Jakob ga et løfte og sa: «Hvis Gud er med meg, og vil bevare meg på denne reisen jeg går, og gir meg brød å spise og klær å ha på meg,

Jacob vowed a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on,

21 slik at jeg kommer tilbake i fred til min fars hus, da skal Herren være min Gud.

so that I come again to my father's house in peace, and Yahweh will be my God,

22 Denne steinen som jeg har reist opp som en minnestein, skal være Guds hus. Og av alt det du gir meg, skal jeg gi deg en tiende.»

then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, will be God's house. Of all that you will give me I will surely give the tenth to you."
